When my friend’s mil died they found more than £30k hidden around the house.

blueshoes · 29/01/2025 23:23

S&S ISA
Investment Bond
Pension
Various deposits
Children's S&S JISA/ISAs

The mortgage is already paid off otherwise I would overpay the mortgage.

I don't like investing in property, hence don't have a second property. I also don't trust crypto, so steered clear of that.

CountAdhemar · 29/01/2025 23:39

Ruling out 'accounts' and 'ISAs' are two pretty big groups for stashing cash.

AnOldCynic · 29/01/2025 23:54

Tucked into my bra. Yes, I have that much savings 😂

CornishTeaTime · 30/01/2025 09:26

Anyone else...where do you currently have your cash/savings if NOT in an ISA or account?

OP posts:
blueshoes · 30/01/2025 09:38

If not in an ISA, you can still invest in stocks and bonds by opening a General Investment Account (GIA).

Aren’t the previous answers good enough?

“Account” covers pretty much anything though doesn’t it?

so if you exclude Isa’s and any other type of bank “account” you are really only left with cash or buying physical items like art or whiskey as per pp.

i have premium bonds, bank savings, some shares- but they still all come under an “account”.

so not sure what you’re asking here.

mindutopia · 30/01/2025 10:17

Premium bonds is still an account, but that’s where I have it.

My grandparents used to keep thousands hidden in amongst clothes in bedroom chest of drawers and in envelopes hidden under every mattress in the house. Literally wads of £20 notes, one under each side of every mattress, and in every drawer. I would have loved to know how much they actually had stashed around the house.

SunshineSky81 · 30/01/2025 10:20

safety deposit box

TimeForATerf · 30/01/2025 10:22

Is it drug money OP you are trying to hide and don't want to impact your benefits?

Light hearted

Or perhaps running away money?

Not light hearted

Unless you are hiding hard cash, everything is ultimately invested in an account of some sort.

Someone else's name you trust with your life?

OneLilacGuide · 30/01/2025 10:30

I’m not sure I fully understand but I make overpayments on my mortgage with savings, so essentially the savings are in property. Does that count?

People also invest in gold, vintage cars, watches, whiskey etc. Is that what you’re getting at?

bifurCAT · 30/01/2025 10:34

Gold, floorboards. It's only going to go up.

Bjorkdidit · 30/01/2025 10:35

It might help if you specify what you mean by 'an account' and what you're trying to achieve by avoiding one.

Are you trying to hide money from the authorities, either due to benefit entitlement or tax avoidance?

Or are you trying to keep it away from an abusive partner?

Something else?

I keep all my money in 'accounts' of one sort or another but I have somehow accumulated close to £100 of supermarket loyalty points and I'm sure I have an unused M&S gift card lurking in my emails somewhere. Plus about 30 quid in euros from the last time I went away.

123ZYX · 30/01/2025 10:37

It might be worth explaining why you're trying to avoid using an "account". Do you have so much that you've exceeded the £85k protected limit at all potential banks? Are you trying to diversify investments? Or are you trying to hide money so that you can claim benefits/ avoid tax/ avoid care home fees?
