I save all my money in cash in a safe. I've never saved in banks.

Anyone else...where do you currently have your cash/savings if NOT in an ISA or account?

Why are you fishing asking?

safety deposit box

I think that’s illegal now due to anti money laundering regulations.

Why do you want to keep your money outside of a regulated institution?

Sprogonthetyne · 30/01/2025 10:55

I have a small amount on a hype-card (pre-paid card) which is almost entirely invisible from my general finance and no one knows but my, just in case.

I wouldn't be comfortable keeping to much in there though.

What? Why would that be illegal. It's your money you can store it where you want. You may have to explain its origin.

In answer to OP's question I wouldn't keep my money outside of a regulated financial institution unless it was invested in property/business

When my friend’s mil died they found more than £30k hidden around the house.

Similar story when my grandpa died, my dad and his siblings found an insane amount of cash scattered around the house.

My suggestions are cash ISA, bonds, and gold but judging from op’s comments I’m guessing they are looking for suggestions more along the lines of a shoebox under the bed.

TheHillsIsLonely · 30/01/2025 11:21

I'm not sure it's a good idea to put any exact hiding places around the home. We don't want to help any house burglars reading with ideas on where to search, not that I'm suggesting the OP is one...

Envelope with enough cash in for a months worth of supermarket shops and petrol. Kept in knicker drawer.

All the rest in a bank account that pays me interest. ISA, premium bonds, bonds,
And some in a stocks and shares ISA

Pension SIPP is also a good place for cash

when my Nan died we found loads of money stashed, she’d neatly fold notes up in the corners of the linen in her linen closet, tucked under her undies, spectacularly down the side of her arm chair, it always amazed me how’s she’d manage to pull a fiver out from nowhere and stick it in my hand.

Not £30ks worth but a good few hundred which is a lot of money in our family. She also use to keep coins, I think it cashed out to be about £300 in coins. This was the 90s.

Nothing prepared us for her alcohol stash, omg she had about 65 bottles of dusty spirits hidden at the back of wardrobes. She rarely drank and use to give everyone else in the family grief for drinking and she was sat on a bloody liquid goldmine 😂

Onedaynotyet · 30/01/2025 19:45

Are you a burglar, OP?

Onedaynotyet · 30/01/2025 19:49

I suppose, if you knew what you were doing, you could buy paintings, or rare books, or gold.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 30/01/2025 20:03

Gold coins from the Royal Mint as they are CGT exempt (unlike gold bars) is where I put my spare if it's not going into investments.

That way the money keeps it's spending power over time.
