Can get ring off

I've worn this ring for 20 years. Unfortunately it's starting to feel increasingly uncomfortable and I have put on a lot of weight. I think I'm going to have to have it cut off. Is it going to be difficult to do because of the stone placement?

Any attempts to remove it other ways are painful and cause even more swelling, the fat has nowhere to go. It's sad but it's my own fault.

Please don’t be unkind about yourself. Have you been to a jeweller? I used to work in a nice family-run one and we used to help people remove rings.

I had a ring cut off in the hot weather last summer. They have a ring cutter which got it off in about 10 seconds with no problems, I paid to have it enlarged and you’d never know now! Cost about £140 and it’s platinum. They said it happens all the time.

I saw a hack - you soak your hand in cold water for 5 mins, then dry it and wind sewing thread around your finger to kind of squish it in. Then unwind the thread.

Try oil taking it off, the ring.

earm · 29/01/2025 00:16

I've tried oils, creams, fairy liquid, glass cleaner. It just leaves my finger sore and swollen from the trauma.

Ive always thought I'd have to be brave and pop down the fire station for help cutting it off but I will call the local jewellers tomorrow, they are a small independent so I'm guessing they won't do it.

Tbh anyone with a small hacksaw and a bit of patience can cut the ring off for you. Just slide a bit of card or plastic under to protect your skin.

Not sure if you meant to upload a pic but nothing is showing if so! ☺️

Look up the toothfloss method

Here's the fat finger!

That looks very painful.

A jeweller should be able to help, don't worry!

BrieHugger · 29/01/2025 08:48

I’ve often wondered why aesthetics salons don’t offer finger lipo, would make more sense than having to get rings resized!

Copperoliverbear · 29/01/2025 08:56

Go to the jeweller and get it cut off today that looks dangerous

gettingolderbutcooler · 29/01/2025 09:38

I agree with the tooth floss method. Friend in A&E swears by it.

catin8oots · 29/01/2025 11:24

Honestly the tooth floss method hurts but it really works. Mine was double that size when it got stuck

earm · 29/01/2025 13:24

Im worried if I try to get it off with a method like the floss method if it doesn't work my finger will swell and it will be stuck and painful and it will become an emergency removal.

At the moment it's not painful just difficult to turn.

Here's the fat finger!

That does look like it needs to come off as a matter of some urgency. Jewellers know a few tricks.

SparklyBrickViper · 29/01/2025 16:11

Honestly OP, jewelry shop.

I had to take my grandmother to get her wedding ring cut off because of arthritis.
It took 5 mins, and they were lovely to her. They also were able
to repair the ring so she still has it and it looks as perfect as when she first put it on.

earm · 29/01/2025 21:33

I've tried some of the you tube methods but it's just not coming off

Ineffable23 · 29/01/2025 21:36

I think the only thing I would be prepared to try on that would be putting my hand in cold water/running under the cold tap for as long as I could bear, and then trying some oil if it looked like it had made a significant difference. Honestly though, I don't think it is likely to come off without help.

TheyNicknamedHerTheBolter · 30/01/2025 17:27

Is it off, OP?

HansHolbein · 30/01/2025 17:28

Go to your local jeweller and they will cut it off.

earm · 30/01/2025 20:50

I've decided to go to the local jewellers, they said they will cut it off for free! I've just got to find the courage to go. After yesterday's failed attempts to remove it it's feeling tighter than ever, being hot makes it worse. Hopefully tomorrow will be the day.

A small family run jeweller will be a much better bet than a big chain IMO! Good luck and hope you decide to get it resized

earm · 30/01/2025 20:58

I'm not sure if it will be repairable because of its design, I'm hoping cutting it off won't be a problem because of the gaps between the stones being close together.
