We usually do a week or 10 days abroad in the summer (Europe beach/pool holiday), a week in the UK at Easter or May half term, and then maybe one or two long weekends which might be UK or might be a European city.

Temporaryname158 · 26/01/2025 19:28

As often as I can.

a 10 night abroad holiday annually and as many weekends away as I can (these are always budget trips like camping, cheap hotel, cook over dinner etc)

I love the time with them

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 26/01/2025 19:28

Two weeks in summer, short breaks each half term.

DazedAndConfused321 · 26/01/2025 19:42

Every school holiday, we go abroad, and one weekend per term, we have a UK break.

MissAmbrosia · 26/01/2025 19:44

Mine is 20 now and prefers to do things with her friends. When she was younger, we normally did 3 weeks abroad in the summer with maybe a couple long weekends in other holidays to Center Parcs or similar and a trip back to the UK for a week to see family. We used to do a girly shopping weekend occasionally - she really liked to going to Cologne on the train to the massive Primark and schnitzel heaven.

Pickled21 · 26/01/2025 19:48

Every school holidays we go away for 2-3 nights. For the last 2 years we have been abroad for a week at a time in the Summer. This year we will go abroad again for a week.

FlatStanley50 · 26/01/2025 19:56

We normally do a week away at May half term, two weeks in the summer. We also do a couple of long weekends over the summer (festival and city break), and last year we also did a couple of long weekends at Feb and Oct half term.

reluctantbrit · 26/01/2025 19:58

Around twice a year, 2 weeks in Summer and often either Easter, May or October for one week.

We did weekend breaks in the past but they got expensive when we needed a second hotel room.

Visting family abroad 1-2x a year but that's not a holiday break so it doesn't count.

aprayeratatime · 26/01/2025 20:00

easter and summer or and sometimes Christmas as well. Weekends also or day trips

ADifferentSong · 26/01/2025 20:02

A week at May half term and then two separate weeks away in the summer. This is below what most of DC’s friends’ families tend to do. Many would have a skiing holiday in February half term, two lots of two weeks away in the summer and maybe October half term as well. Private school with most parents being lawyers and high finance people.
For many reasons family holidays feel just too clunky for me and our trips away are the minimum I feel we can get away for the sake of DC.

MumInTheMitte · 26/01/2025 20:04

Abroad twice a year (one week in summer and a long weekend in winter). Usually a sun holiday in summer, and Christmas markets or city break in December

One weekend break at home, usually in may or august

And one night away with DH each year also, which isn’t enough, but it didn’t happen until our youngest got to 10, and is more than others get

Itgetsharder · 26/01/2025 20:05

I’m separated so they go away with us separately, I will do a few nights away and a holiday. This year we’ve had 1 night away so far to see a musical, we’re going away for a 2 night hotel break in another city in February, going to Paris for a long weekend in march and they will go on holiday with their dad and then another with me. So quite a good bit.

TheChosenTwo · 26/01/2025 20:07

A week away (uk) over new year, a few days at Easter (uk), May half term week (abroad), summer holidays 2 weeks (abroad) and then a few days in October half term (uk).
there may be the odd weekend away thrown in there too.
I get a generous leave allowance but use some of it for myself. Dh is self employed and can take time off as and when.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 26/01/2025 20:08

Every holidays/half term and probably about 6 weekend breaks a year.

But I'll caveat that during the nursery years we did an annual 4 days in Butlins! Just diverted the nursery fund to a holiday fund because I'm irresponsible

PigInADuvet · 26/01/2025 20:09

A couple of times a year. Although talking a weekend or at most mon-fri UK based. Probably ready to start venturing further afield next year (DC is 6 and autistic, so something we've been working up to gradually!)

ScaredyMa · 26/01/2025 20:12

Last year we went away 8 times, 2 were week long and the others long weekends - all UK though!

weegiemum · 26/01/2025 20:20

Ours are adults now (21,23,25) and we last went on holiday with them all 3 years ago.

When they were younger we lived a fair way and 1/2 ferries from different parts of the family (us on an island, my family on mainland Scotland, dh's family in Northern Ireland), so in shorter school holidays we'd visit them.

Then we'd do a longer holiday in the summer, 2-3 weeks depending on where. We went to Canada to visit dhs brother and family, dh had a sabbatical when kids were small so we did 3 weeks backpacking in Central America and 3 weeks in Canada again, 3 weeks in the Dominican Republic where we did loads of snorkelling, diving, Spanish classes etc.

Also in other years we ed go to Europe - France, Spain, Croatia. But by then we'd moved off the island and still had (have) a house there so alternate years it would be 2-3 weeks there in the summer. As the kids got bigger then it was around a local music festival (growing up in the Hebrides has left all of them as avid modern Scottish folk addicts!).

This year they're all doing their own thing. Ds is going to France to visit his girlfriend's family, not sure what the girls will do yet.

We've always prioritised holidays, they're so important to us. Ds saved up 2 years ago and had a month in Australia! Dd2 is hoping to go to Vietnam if she can afford it. Dd1 has just bought a flat but still hoping for a week in the sun somewhere. Dh and I will probably go back "home" a few times, going for 2 weeks in March.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/01/2025 20:39

Every other month for weekends and a couple of week holidays

LostittoBostik · 26/01/2025 20:41

Twice a year - usually once at Easter rand once in the summer. Both in UK. One is with grandparents which helps with the cost (and actually gives us a couple of days off)

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 26/01/2025 20:43

Easter, May or October and summer abroad.
Feb half term we do a couple of nights away UK.

Sweetappley · 26/01/2025 20:59

Most go away a lot then every half term then. We do similar.

To be fair, as much fun as this thread is (and it does reflect us!) I think it's likely only people who travel a lot have answered. It's really not representative of most people I know, or national averages 😂

HPandthelastwish · 26/01/2025 21:04

We live walking distance to a lovely sandy beach and go in the sea fairly regularly between May-October so don't bother with beach holidays.

We tend to do city breaks mostly UK instead, a couple a year, and a longer London break during Kids Week in August and see 5 or so shows. We'll also make a weekend of it if DD is competing in her sport more than 2 hours or so from home if we can get a cheap Premier Inn.
