How often do you go on holidays/breaks with dc?

Many families never get to go away, perhaps the manage a couple of short camping trips per year but they won't be posting about that. We had it easy because my parents live by the sea, even if times were tougher my dc got multiple seaside breaks per year, if it weren't for them I wouldn't have been able to go on holiday every year!

kuicebusters · 26/01/2025 21:10

About 5 times a year, up to 2 weeks at a time. 2 weeks summer holiday long haul, 1-2 weeks Europe, then a few UK short breaks 1-4 nights each.

www.legalandgeneral.com/insurance/life-insurance/family-holiday-report/#:~:text=Families%20have%20budgeted%20an%20average,their%20number%20one%20holiday%20type.

This was an interesting read, albeit from last year -

  • only 54% of families who travel (out of over 2,000 surveyed) planned on taking a family holiday at all that year.
  • average budget of £2,005 annually, I think per family

And Condor Ferries reckons the average is 2.2 holidays a year for families across the UK. Not sure how reliable that will be given they're trying to coax people to book through them 😂

Don't mind me, I've just disappeared down an internet black hole on the subject... 😛

In the last few years we've been to stay with inlaws once per year (same country)
In terms of actual holiday (still primarily to see family, but this time in a different country) first time maybe this summer? Eldest is 8 😅.
It's a combo of finances and husband actually disliking holidays. It's rather sad, but I'm really not looking forward to the proposed summer trip, I think it's going to be hellish dealing with kids in a strange environment. Obviously that's just inexperience but I'd have a nervous break down going away every school holidays 😅

We travel every school holidays but not always with DH. Sometimes just me and the kids

Mamofteenager · 26/01/2025 21:29

We go February half term abroad for a week for a bit of winter sun and again in the summer holidays, abroad for a week. My parents also take them away for a week in the summer holidays. We usually do a few weekend UK city trips throughout the year plus my parents have a sited caravan that we use occasionally throughout the season.

I didn't realise we did as much until writing this down! We are very fortunate.

We haven't been anywhere for 3 years pretty much as we haven't had the money nor the inclination to fly with small children. This year we are managing a week in Germany, a European city break to stay with friends and a week in Devon. It's costing a fortune but we booked air miles flights and have found other ways to keep the costs down.

From next year onwards I hope to take the kids abroad once a year. I want them to realise there is a big wide world out there and to experience some of it with me!

SparklingSpa · 26/01/2025 23:36

My DC are grown up now, when they were younger we went away four or five of the school holidays. Normally long haul at Feb or Easter, Med in the Summer, then a couple of UK breaks such as a Haven caravan or Center Parcs or a few nights in a hotel with a pool near good days out.. As they got older we stopped the Easter trips as they wanted to revise. Now we go away once a year together.

purpleme12 · 26/01/2025 23:37

Never

Pinkchilli · 26/01/2025 23:44

Yeah I’d say that most people replying travel a lot!! I don’t travel much with my kids initially it was due to Covid (kids are under 7)and having no excess £. In the last 2 years we have gone abroad to Europe. I priced a family holiday all inclusive abroad (not the mumsnet fave 🤣) the cost is insane for a basic place. I grudge paying loads to stay in a place worse than my house.
I am trying to make a point of taking the kids away somewhere now they are older but defo not several times per year even with 2 decent incomes I can’t afford it.

Fireflies8 · 27/01/2025 00:33

Once a year abroad if finances allow.
If not just a few nights in u.k

JennyTals · 19/02/2025 18:45

As often as possible.
Last year 4
But travel,is my passion, I can go without a lot of stuff, but I sure do love holidays

Bugbeau · 19/02/2025 19:48

We go on a week holiday abroad each summer and a long weekend in a holiday park in the uk with extended family. We will also do a few weekends/nights away to visit family as well over the course of the year.
