Has anyone ditched the microwave?

Thrilling chat for a Sunday morning I know, but I’ve been thinking about getting rid of ours for a while. It takes up so much of our limited worktop space, and yes we do use it a bit, but we have an air fryer that can reheat so we’d really just be losing the defrost function, and ability to cook a microwave meal (not necessarily a bad thing?!)
So, has anyone got rid of theirs, was it not even missed or will we be making a big mistake?

Can I ask people that have a combi microwave oven, does the lack of rotation affect the microwaving?

Mine does rotate

Slytherinnnnn · 26/01/2025 14:24

My old one rotated, I chose one that didn't when I replaced it as I wanted the option to have two shelves for baking/roasting.

I haven't noticed any difference at all. Microwaving wise only I probably only use it for reheating soup, baked beans, frozen peas, steaming those veg pouch things, cooking rice, popcorn and making porridge on a regular basis.

Cynic17 · 26/01/2025 14:30

I'm nearly 60 years old. I have never even used a microwave, much less owned one. I don't know why I would need one and have never felt the lack of such an item. (Also, they take up a lot of space in a small kitchen!).

Thanks.
I'm thinking about replacing the 2nd oven in double oven set up and wondered if I should go for combi . My (ancient) microwave is on the counter so it would free up space.
The only combi I've used didn't rotate so I just assumed that was the case for all . I will now research. Thank you

I'd said about getting rid for ages and eventually we did - it blew up.

However we have since replaced it- easy for reheating, porridge etc. Helpful when time poor. I just wish they were smaller!

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 26/01/2025 14:44

How do people soften butter? As that is what I use it for the most.

I also use mine for porridge (I have those sachets that go in for 2 minutes no faffing about cooking at 6am).

Mine is used daily.

This one is slimline, doesn't take up a huge space, it was excellent. I gave it away locally because I wanted one of the bigger ones with two shelves. Not sure how the price compares but you get 10% off at panasonic if you sign up.

I start them off in the microwave, then finish them off in the air fryer for crisping the skin up.

I've never needed to do that; mine come out of the combi nicely "crisped".

Mine is a Panasonic slimline combi; can't fault it for what I need to do.

I have already said I use mine all the time, but I have just purchased some microwave plate warmers because one of the things I hate about air fryers is that you have nowhere to warm your plates. If you have the oven on you can just put your plates at the bottom for a couple of minutes.

In sink. Cover with hot water, drain, serve on to them, is what I do.
Pans utensils etc then go in same hot water to soak while we eat.

I haven't had one for years and don't miss it!

Same

we used it for sterilising bottles when kids were tiny, youngest is now 16. Then it broke, it was an integrated one combined with grill and it seemed a hassle to replace. So we didn’t. Then when we replaced our kitchen years later I grudged the idea of setting aside the space for it. So we still don’t have one. Been around 15 years now without it I reckon.

@OnlyWhenILaugh speaking to a firm of kitchen fitters last weekend, they said combi microwave and a fan oven to replace double oven is the growing trend

LikeMyHeartIsAboutToStopBeating · 26/01/2025 15:56

The only thing I miss is being able to heat up rice bags as I'm a touch nervous about hot water bottles after one leaked all over me. Otherwise I haven't missed it since it broke a year or so ago.

Thanks, I will give this a try if my plate warmers don’t work. I usually don’t have a draining rack as I only buy things that go in the dishwasher. I also hate drying things.

Yes this is what my neighbour had fitted in. We had our kitchens fitted at the same time and we have identical houses. She put her old microwave in the garage and when she is doing a big meal for all the family and using both ovens, she pops out to the garage to use it. I went with 1 oven and a built in microwave above the worktop. I have a portable oven in the garage that I could pop into the kitchen if I needed more oven space.

Yes! It was really my ex husband who needed the microwave. I’d never owned one until we married. Divorced now.
The microwave wasn’t being used by me and was a total space hog. Got rid of it. never miss it.

Much like the ex husband? 😉😂

I do use my microwave regularly but still resent the space it takes up. If/when I get my kitchen done again I’d get a microwave drawer. I’ve seen them mainly in American kitchens but I think you can get them here too

Nannyfannybanny · 27/01/2025 07:26

I had a combi/microwave/grill, fancy expensive. The grill was a devil to clean, mostly the microwave was ok. Grandkids like microwave popcorn, can't do that without a turntable,so have now got a standard microwave.

Tilly915 · 27/01/2025 07:46

I've never had one!

Stravaig · 27/01/2025 07:55

Also never had one. Nor a bread mixer or multi-cooker or air fryer. Or toaster!
I'm holding out for a full-blown food replicator 🤣.

SkyGrant · 27/01/2025 07:58

We have not owned a microwave in 6 years or so do not miss it. In our previous property we had a new fitted kitchen and it was not used.

I do not like the taste of appearance of food from a microwave.

My only regret is that I didn't shove him inside with a fork and some extra foil for good measure. 😂
Sorry. That's a bit dark. But... actually, I do sort of wish I'd done this. Damn. All of the good ideas arrive too late in the day!

StressedLP1 · 27/01/2025 10:14

We were without one for a year when the old one broke. Recently replaced it and we’re quite excited! For most things it’s just a time saver, but there’s nothing else for softening butter.
