How does everyone cope with heavy smartphones?

Recently bought a new phone. It's been a while since I've had to get a new one so I was surprised to find out that most of the top end ones were seriously heavy (at least 200g). I ended up going for an iPhone 16 even though I really wanted the better camera on the IPhone 16 Pro, just because it was lighter. I think anything heavier/bigger would give me hand pain. How does everyone cope with heavier phones these days? Do you all use phone stands at home? What about when you're out?

I like samsung and could have got a s24 FE for much cheaper than the s24 but went for the more expensive one as it's not as big and heavy as the FE version.

Honestly I think you just adjust. My last phone was about 140g, 5inch screen etc but I struggled to find anything that size when I looking last year. I also didn't have a big budget so the one I ended up with was well over 200g & 6+ inch screen and I thought it was huge. I pulled the old one out of the drawer earlier to charge up in advance of this storm and I can't get over how dinky it feels now.

I don't use a phone stand, no. They are't that heavy!

I have a Samsung 24 FE and I've just checked and it weighs 213g. I can't say that it gives me any hand pain and I have never really thought that it feels heavy.

I did originally get the heavier iPhone but it just felt so heavy I had to return it (luckily Apple have a good returns policy). Maybe if I knew I couldn't return it after opening I would have just adapted but because I knew I could, I just couldn't get over how much heavier it was. My old one was around 140g too - as light as a feather!

They’re not so heavy that they’re hard to carry. I’ve never felt any need for a phone stand.

I am majorly clumsy so I always need to add a good case to protect from drops so that adds to the bulk!

I really struggle with mine lately, I have a pop socket on the back to help hold it and always hold with both hands, when I’m at home I try not to use it or rest it down and just type on it rather than holding it

getthosetitsup · 23/01/2025 19:23

I have a Popsocket on mine (iPhone 15 Pro Max). Only because I have little hands with stubby little fingers and the Popsocket gives me a bit of security that it won't randomly tip out of my hand.

I can't say I find it particularly heavy though.

I hate the trend for increasingly large phones. It has become practically impossible to get a decent small phone. I settled for an iPhone SE because of its size.

NoodleNuts · 24/01/2025 11:03

I genuinely have never noticed, maybe I just have giant hands 😁

eurochick · 24/01/2025 11:44

I can't say I have ever given the weight of my phone a second thought. It's just not that heavy (iPhone 15).

The base iPhone models aren't that heavy but the Pro ones with better camera are!

it seems like we might be in the minority or maybe I just have feeble hands!

Mine isn't as heavy as some (iphone 11) but I miss my old iphone 5 which was light as a feather and fitted into any pocket. The heavy ones are hard on the wrists.

stickygotstuck · 24/01/2025 11:51

I am not bothered about their weight, it's the size I object to.

And the bloody sleek edges - what for? A bloody phone does not need to aerodynamic. Except to hit the floor quicker when it slips off your hand for the 50th time because no woman's hand is big enough to hold them securely.

I have a mini smartphone, with rugged edges and a silicone case to make it even less slippy.

Yet another example of design by men for men - who not only have bigger hands but decent-sized pockets.

Coldanddamp · 24/01/2025 12:11

with one hand & my hands are not that small. I had one iphone which was a great size but they discontinued that size.

Coldanddamp · 24/01/2025 12:12

i need a pop socket but then i can't always get it in my pocket.

Love a pop socket. I had one on my old phone even though it's super light - it just makes it easier to hold and not slip out of your hands.

Mine is a similar weight and I don't find it too heavy, but I do struggle to fit it in several pockets.

ExtraDisorganised · 24/01/2025 14:03

Mine's a 14Pro, 250g, each one has got progressively slightly bigger but the size bothers me more than the weight, weight is only an issue in that it pulls pockets down, not a problem in actual use. I use it all day every day, in one hand a lot of the time. I'd never have one of the Max ones though. I don't use a stand and no idea what a pop socket is, mine is just in a silicone case, I rarely drop it.

Autther · 24/01/2025 14:05

Literally never occurred to me to weigh my phone 😂

Ginkypig · 24/01/2025 14:08

I agree (also got the se because it was the same size as the 7) and also on top of that find it more difficult sometimes because I often use my non dominant hand because the buttons are set up to be right handed which means I often end up with a button press by mistake as the phone isn’t set up to be used in the left hand.

An example would be things like locking the phone by mistake when I try to turn the volume up or down because holding it one handed with the left hand the finger naturally settles on the lock button when you use the thumb to use the volume button which then when you add pressure pushes the lock button but in the right hand (one handed) the thumb naturally settles under the lock button when you use the fingers to press the volume buttons. So it’s use the less dominant weaker hand or hold it with two hands while you do certain things.

i don’t really mind too much about the weight (care more about the size though) if truth be told but I also don’t want to spend a huge sum of money on an item that gets used so much which is a source of regular mild irritation either.

Tipperttruck · 24/01/2025 14:13

I leave mine in cupboards, the fridge or on the washing machine and then I can't find it so that helps.
