Manspreading

Been to London for the day. On the tube encountered a classic manspreader, knees out into my space. I pushed his knees back with my leg and took up my space. He flinched but then made a point of pressing back.

I am 54 years old and no longer give a toss about what men think of me. I don't particularly like contact but I was making a point.

On the train on the way home a large man plonked himself next to me. He said 'oh sorry ' when he realised he had hit me in his way down. But he then proceeded to try to take up some of my space to make himself comfortable. I sympathise that he's larger and can't help it but that's not my problem. No longer will I squash myself in to a corner just to make someone else more comfortable.

He started off trying to stay in his space but after a while he pressed against me, and was flexing his leg muscles in a twitchy way. I am certain he felt aggrieved that an older woman wasn't making him as comfortable as possible.

The next man to sit next to me managed to stay in his space, the man opposite me on the tube didn't encroach into the space of the woman next to him. My husband doesn't do it.

I always push back now but I understand why many wouldn't. But I'm old and I've had enough. A lifetime of making myself small for the comfort of others has ended.

So, manspreaders, fuck the lot of em.

And yes, I also tell womanspreaders to move their bags if I need a seat.

Jesus

Yes, he was a classic spreader, as is evidenced in this historical image.

My favourite move is to wait for the man to plonk themselves down and they put down the single arm rest in the centre of the double train seat. Then you swiftly get your arm on it before they can.

This is just weird. So you didn't want the arm rest, which is why you didn't pull it down to begin with. But when someone else goes to the trouble of pulling the arm rest down so they can use it, you suddenly decide you want to use it, even though you're not entitled to do so because you didn't pull it down?

That's not fighting back against manspreading. That's just rudeness.

No, this guy was deliberately spreading himself at the expense of MY comfort.

I'm not having it

You seem very angry OP. Are you OK?

Luckily for me I'm unattractive and old so I have no fear of them sexualising me!

It's liberating to give no fucks

Stop saying you're old!!
You're only in your 50's..

You're not a pensioner, are you?
Well then 👍

I hate them too. They don’t do it to other men. I push back as well. When I was younger and thinner I used to bring a broadsheet onto the train with me to take up more space so men didn’t think they could just take it.

I recently encountered a new variation on this theme.

I got on a fairly busy train but found a pair of those aircraft-type seats (all facing the same way) free. I made to sit in the window seat as I like it and knew a lot of people would get on at the next station. As I stepped towards the seat the train lurched and I trod down quite hard on my leading foot. Except the 'floor' wasn't hard and flat and it moved. I sort of fell sideways into the seat banging my back and shoulder and getting a bit of a shock. I may have let out a small yelp.

Turned out the guy in the seat behind had stretched his legs out right under my seat and into the space in front of my seat where my feet would go. I turned and glared at him, but decided that my rather hard stamp on his foot spoke for itself. The older guy next to him had a word with him and he pulled himself up a bit.

Don’t disregard the invisible fug leaching out of their sweaty / cheesey bollocks when they’re freed, probably with a slightly painful peeling apart - like taking off a plaster🤮
