So I'm about to start trying to lose a stone in weight, is there something better than slimming world that I should be trying

Before I go down that route again

Reason I don't think I wanna do sliming wold again, is I don't think it's sustainable long term
And there nit much guidance what to do to maintain when you've lost the weight

Is there some sort of youtube or influence I should be following

When I want to lose weight I just cut out sugar, butter, snacks, biscuits, chocs and switch to skimmed milk. The longer you do it the less you miss them. I eat normally in the evenings as I cook for 5. Have a treat at the weekend so doesn't get too boring and gives you something look forward to. That's without exercise have lost 3 stone in 7 months

whateveryouwantmetosay · 21/01/2025 15:28

I really like Emily Cornelius nutrition on instagram. She advocates for controlling blood sugar through diet and exercise so no crazy cutting of one food group and a much better way to healthily lose and maintain that loss.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 21/01/2025 15:30

I thought SW gave you a maintenance brochure thing and allowed you to go to class for free?

As it stands, all diets are the same. I see so many influencers slating WW, SW and the like, yet those influencers are usually shilling their own weight loss plan which is no different long term.

Tontostitis · 21/01/2025 15:32

SW is the best way, eat better move more and be accountable to someone. Plus a group and associated FB page packed with ideas and recipes. Occasionally boring but often really inspirational i love going to group. 3 stone off and more or less at target for several years now.

Work out your calories needed to lose weight in the James Smith Acadeny free calculator.

Then count the calories in everything you eat and drink; oil, sauces, butter, on my fitness pal or the like.

Eat plenty lean protein to fill you up and preserve muscle and you’ll feel full, and lose weight. You can eat anything at all within that, no need to cut out carbs, fats, or sugar.

Save calories for a takeaway or wine. It’s all good. Sustainable. Aim to lose 1-2obs per week

And get yourself following the Fitness Chef group on Facebook

Calorie deficit
Nothing is good or bad as long as you track it. Also weigh your food - the difference between a small/large jacket potato for example is a lot. I use the nutracheck app to work it out. You can also scan the barcodes on most products

Bjorkdidit · 21/01/2025 15:41

The best diet is one that works for you long term, that you view as a lifestyle change, not a diet you will follow until you are slim again, at which point you go back to overeating and gaining weight again.

Slimming World is good if you have time to cook from scratch and don't eat out much as you can just make endless meals from the free foods that you can eat as much as you like of without counting every calorie you eat. You only have to limit things like bread and obviously high calorie food like biscuits, crisps, alcohol etc.

They do have a maintenance plan, which is careful increase of food like dairy, but still limiting high calorie crap. However, it's much harder to stick to plan and eat out, unless you want to eat boring food like baked potatoes, fish or chicken and veg/salad or plain omelettes, so the sort of food no-one in their right minds would pay restaurant prices for.

All weight loss is calorie deficit. Nutracheck is the opposite of Slimming World, as you can eat anything you like within your calorie allowance.

Which is fine if you eat a repetitive diet of packaged food where you only have to count up a few different things each day, but extremely tedious if you cook meals with lots of ingredients that you might not eat in standard portion sizes as you're always having to count up what you're eating.

ReignOfError · 21/01/2025 15:49

Warned by my GP two weeks ago that I was heading towards pre-diabetes (my whole family are diabetic, so I check annually), he told me to eat three meals a day and no snacks at all. I am -was - about half a stone overweight, so wasn't aiming to lose weight really, but I've lost four pounds without making any other changes. My snacks were mostly fruit, a couple of slices of cheese, and maybe one biscuit a day.

I have stopped eating the biscuits, still eating the fruit and cheese but at mealtimes. I'm having one sweet snack a week when I meet friends for tea and have a cake.

I haven't stepped up my exercise - gym classes three times a week, physio, basic stretches, and some gentle walking every day, as I'm recovering from injuries and surgery - and am honestly quite surprised at the weight loss, and will be interested to see if it continues.

Shrinkingrose · 21/01/2025 15:49

Slimming world is statistically the worst, with 97 percent regaining the weight, much higher than the 85 percent average, I reckon it’s all the free foods like potatoes etc, so you don’t learn what a healthy portion is really, and the daft muller light laughing cow stuff that no one eats through choice when not on a diet and can’t wait to stop.

so you’re right op.

im using injections but the truth is, a high protein, low ish carb, low fat, diet within a calorie deficit is the way to do it.

TriangleLight · 21/01/2025 15:50

I never eat ready meals and calorie counting is really not difficult. I don’t know why people say this!

WhatTheKey · 21/01/2025 15:52

Soup. Loads of soup.

BigDahliaFan · 21/01/2025 15:55

Eat 3 meals a day, mostly veg. Don't snack. Eat protein and fibre. Don't eat 'diet' food. You can send me the SW subscription fee....

Moier · 21/01/2025 15:59

Slimming world is a cult and scientifically proven not to work.

ffsgloria · 21/01/2025 15:59

Don't follow any diet 'plan'

Make sure you eat protein at every meal as it fills you up. Aim for 20-30g per meal.

Drink lots of water

Get lots of sleep

Eat as many fruits & vegetables as you like

Limit upf

As long as you are in a calorie deficit you will lose weight

suki1964 · 21/01/2025 16:02

I like SW because of the support and the accountability

I got to target in November 23, and Ive maintained since

Those that go on to regain the weight are those that saw it as a diet, to be done just to lose the weight, then went straight back to their old habits. Its learning how to eat a healthy diet for life

ffsgloria · 21/01/2025 16:18

If you want to follow someone I like Graeme Tomlinson, The Fitness Chef, on Instagram.

It’s 97 percent, and with respect, so clearly something is wrong.

I think that's about the same with WLI as well

Im more then happy with SW, might not be your bag, but hey ho, its working for me, I don't ever intend to put the weight back on

Yes

Proper sensible advice

TheRadiatorLady · 21/01/2025 16:24

I don't feel like Slimming World is a good choice for people who just have a stone to lose It focuses too much on volume eating, which works for a while when you're bigger, but once you get smaller, it's rubbish.

When I needed to lose a stone, I just made sure everything I ate was a whole food - no calorie counting or anything too faffy. Took about 6 weeks.

PandoraFrontier · 21/01/2025 16:24

SW is awful. Pushes you to eat chemicals and shun real foods.

the healthiest and most sustainable way to weight loss is to eat a whole food diet. You don’t go hungry, you lose weight naturally and you’re not poisoning yourself with artificial sweeteners (and sneaking a freddo because it’s within your bullshit syns whilst shunning half an avocado with your eggs for breakfast which is FULL of nutrients, fibre and healthy fats).

CarrotSeeds · 21/01/2025 16:26

Intermittent fasting and low-carb works very well for me.

Yoheresthestory · 21/01/2025 16:29

C25K with a local running club. You could come away with more than just fitness!
