So I'm about to start trying to lose a stone in weight, is there something better than slimming world that I should be trying

Before I go down that route again

Reason I don't think I wanna do sliming wold again, is I don't think it's sustainable long term
And there nit much guidance what to do to maintain when you've lost the weight

Is there some sort of youtube or influence I should be following

SW is the best way, eat better move more and be accountable to someone. Plus a group and associated FB page packed with ideas and recipes. Occasionally boring but often really inspirational i love going to group. 3 stone off and more or less at target for several years now.

There isn't one way that's the best. The best is the way that suits you the most.

Personally for me it's boring old eating better and exercise and making better choices. I don't like excluding food groups or feeling you've failed if you've gone over a limit on one day.

Phineyj · 21/01/2025 16:35

I haven't tried Slimming World but I had some success with Noom.

HippyKayYay · 21/01/2025 16:42

Depends how old you are. If you're pre-menopause, you can probably just do the 'move more, eat less'/ burn more calories than you eat in whatever fashion works for you (calorie counting, intermittent fasting, macro-tracking, etc).

After I passed the menopause (late 40s) that all stopped working and I tried the Human Being Diet (https://thehumanbeingdiet.com/) cos a friend was doing it to sort out some inflammatory issues. I shifted that annoying extra stone pretty quickly. It's got a big following on Insta where you can get lots of recipe inspo. And it works for menopausal women and/or women who've yo--yo dieted before.

It's not easy, but the rules are really straightforward with no calorie counting, so I found it easy to follow. Plus you lose a lot of weight quickly at the beginning, which is great motivation to keep going.

Also a lot cheaper than Noom or SW. All you need is the book (I didn't bother with the receipe book)

Cut out carbs and sugar- eat more protein, some fat ( for e.g. Full fat yoghurt- not low fat) and lots of veg. Snack on nuts, eat lots of eggs. The weight will fall off and you wont feel so hungry. Good luck

murraymcgill · 21/01/2025 16:54

@JennyTals well a month on Mounjaro the weight loss jag you'll be down a stone no bother

Namechangean · 21/01/2025 16:59

SW has never worked for me long term.. It’s fine for the first few months but eventually I find it too restrictive in what I can eat, but not restrictive enough on portions. When I counted my calories of what I was eating on SW I was eating too many to lose a significant amount.

I’m nearly 5st down now and I’ve done it by tracking my calories everyday (I use an app that makes it easy) and so have continued to eat foods I enjoy but able to make better decisions depending on my calorie count that day

BashfulClam · 21/01/2025 17:01

i lost 4 stone in 6 month by using a calorie deficit. I could eat what I wanted in reason. It also shows you how crap SW is when they tell you you can eat tons of pasta etc. look up Sean Casey and James Smith. Wish I’d fonrbit years ago instead of in my mid 40’s!

Defiantlynot41 · 21/01/2025 17:03

Agree with everything @ffsgloria said. I would also focus on mindful eating if that's not too awful a term - basically, if you really want something, eat it, but pause and focus on eating it, and how it makes you feel.

I often regret eating sweet treats, especially ones with lots of UPF ( and Ultra Processed People is a fascinating book) and in wondering "was it worth it?", the answer is usually no, so next time I remember that. Occasionally it was worth it, and try to discern why that was so!

anothermnuser123 · 21/01/2025 17:03

I think the easiest things to do are up protein and avoid upf as much as possible as this then encourages you to eat more whole foods.

I do meal prep once a week, look up high protein meal prep and you can find some great recipes. The more you do it , the quicker you get and then you aren't tempted to snack during the week as you have everything made up and ready to go.

SharpOpalNewt · 21/01/2025 17:15

After trying to get down to normal BMI for the last 15+ years, there are definitely no more "big lifestyle changes" I can make, sustainably. I am eating a very balanced diet in terms of calories and macros, logging everything, plenty of protein and fibre, weigh most things to check portion control, plenty of green veg, healthy fats, do three decent workouts a week, plus yoga and walking, one or two small portions of chocolate and alcohol a week, take away on a Friday (not a huge blow out meal though).

I just want to now eat a bit less for a little while then when I've lost the weight, (two stone) carry on at a good maintenance level of calories. Just a matter of tweaking calories so it's not too severe or unsustainable, or not effective (just, she says - it's not easy).

I have though at least acheived the opposite of most women between the ages of 35 and 49 and am actually 5kg lighter overall, and am 12kg lighter than my heaviest aged 41. Slow and steady is good but at times frustrating!

SW is awful. Pushes you to eat chemicals and shun real foods.

the healthiest and most sustainable way to weight loss is to eat a whole food diet. You don’t go hungry, you lose weight naturally and you’re not poisoning yourself with artificial sweeteners (and sneaking a freddo because it’s within your bullshit syns whilst shunning half an avocado with your eggs for breakfast which is FULL of nutrients, fibre and healthy fats).

Edited

Sorry? When were you last in SW? SW promotes home cooking and avoiding UPF, not one chemical have they pushed my way

suki1964 · 21/01/2025 17:25

Moier · 21/01/2025 15:59

Slimming world is a cult and scientifically proven not to work.

A cult?????? Seriously what planet are you on lololololololol

SW promotes artificial sweeteners, fat free ultra processed yoghurts, diet sodas, their disgusting ready meals and breakfast bars.

BobbyBiscuits · 21/01/2025 19:48

If you like volume eating then SW is good. You can eat quite a lot of certain foods.

I find low carb to be very effective for a stone or less weight loss. If you can be strict with sugar etc.
For example, a 'grilled fry up' -slice or two of back bacon, mushrooms, a tomato, two poached eggs for breakfast.
Then soup and salad for lunch
Dinner could be something like chicken or pork fillet stuffed with ricotta and spinach or mozerella with green beans, asparagus or kale. Or baked salmon/haddock with lemon and herbs.
SF jelly or berries with cream as a snack/dessert.

But calorie reduction in general will give you steady weigh loss. You should check your BMR and work from there.

Shrinkingrose · 21/01/2025 20:44

If you like volume eating then SW is good

yup and that right there is why it fails.

suki1964 · 21/01/2025 16:02

I like SW because of the support and the accountability

I got to target in November 23, and Ive maintained since

Those that go on to regain the weight are those that saw it as a diet, to be done just to lose the weight, then went straight back to their old habits. Its learning how to eat a healthy diet for life

Exactly this.

It's not something to do then return to your usual eating.

I've been at target or below for 20 years now. I don't follow it religiously but it did educate me on what was bad in my diet previously...Chicken Tonight sauce I'm looking at you 😂

Justhere65 · 21/01/2025 20:53

Have you looked at the HB diet? There is a thread on Mumsnet. I’ve struggled for years with my weight and am finally losing weight and so pleased. I don’t think SW is that healthy.

SW promotes artificial sweeteners, fat free ultra processed yoghurts, diet sodas, their disgusting ready meals and breakfast bars.

No they dont

They are there, as tools, for those that need them, and Ive not eaten any of it nor will I ever

They advocate clean eating, to scratch cook, to eat as much veg as you can with each and every meal , cut the bread and excessive fats - oh my, they advise taking the fat of bacon - how bad is that, don't tell you not to eat the bacon, just cut the fat off - dreadful advice

Always think its the ones who shout the loudest about SW being a cult/doesnt work etc are the ones who have yo yo dieted all their lives, jumping from diet to diet

So its ok for everyone to promote/advocate randoms from the internet, its ok for people to promote low carbs ( not sustainable for life ) and yet a programme that says there are no foods not allowed , just avoid UPF, cook from scratch and get the veg into you is totally pilliored ? And a whole flipping board promoting WLI and half the posters on it looking ways to get them unsupervised cos they are no where near obese but just cba to do the hard work

Someone on here has even said - WLI - the stone will soon be gone !!! WTF is that teaching anyone ?

Shrinkingrose · 21/01/2025 15:49

Slimming world is statistically the worst, with 97 percent regaining the weight, much higher than the 85 percent average, I reckon it’s all the free foods like potatoes etc, so you don’t learn what a healthy portion is really, and the daft muller light laughing cow stuff that no one eats through choice when not on a diet and can’t wait to stop.

so you’re right op.

im using injections but the truth is, a high protein, low ish carb, low fat, diet within a calorie deficit is the way to do it.

You are meant to eat to your appetite though. No one should be eating vast amounts of mashed potatoes to the point that they are stuffed just because they are free food. That's just common sense. It's a simpler way of ensuring you have a calorie deficit without having to work them out yourself. If you do the diet correctly you are within a calorie deficit.

Bjorkdidit · 22/01/2025 04:15

If you do the diet correctly you are within a calorie deficit

And most of your food is protein, veg, pulses, fruit and whole grains with occasional small amounts of unhealthy food like bread, anything processed, crisps, cakes, alcohol etc, so exactly like most other healthy eating and weight loss plans.

And I don't know why people think you can't have avocados because you can. You just can't have more than half to one a day at the same time as other calorie dense foods and an unmeasured amount of basic foods because when you have all those together you're at risk of losing your calorie deficit so won't lose weight.
