Would you walk through a foggy wood at night for 1k?

A bizarre question I admit, but inspired by the foggy weather we had a few weeks ago. Driving at dusk and passing all the bare trees in the mist reminded me of countless Hammer horror films. A legacy of my teenage years waiting for Christopher Lee to pounce on the poor girl alone in the murky woods.

So how much would you have to be paid to walk alone in the woods on a foggy night? In the UK so no bears around. Personally, I don't think you could pay me enough 😂

Depends how far /deep and what country. A 30 month walk in UK? Definitely. Something longer/scarier, I'd want more cash.

@LikeEveGotBitten that is interesting.

Apparently men cannot understand why women would prefer a bear over a lone male. Men do not have any concept of the innate fear that women have of men which we carry around with us everywhere and is at the back of our thoughts.

I asked my adult son what he would do if he found himself walking behind a lone or small group of women them e.g. getting off a bus, or just walking around going about their business.
He said he would cross the street or keep a good distance. So he does understand, as I'm sure most men do.
I don't think women have an innate fear of men, we are not born fearing them.

I walked from dusk to dawn when preparing to walk across America.

Was a pleasant experience, despite the fog.

Tell us more!

Mingenious · 20/01/2025 08:20

I do it regularly and no one’s ever offered to pay me!

Lobstercrisps · 20/01/2025 08:22

I already do this often with my dogs at 5am. We live near an old railway track which follows a river valley. It is completely wooded and I was down there yesterday morning at 5am with the dogs (labradors so not likely to defend me!)

I also walk around our local countryside on my own in the dark with a headtorch. Love seeing the animals eyes reflecting back at me.

Sixtop · 20/01/2025 08:23

In the middle of the countryside, sure. I used to go for walks with a head torch at 3 am if it was a nice night and I couldn’t sleep. On the edge of an urban area, no.

Lobstercrisps · 20/01/2025 08:24

I met a woman on the local Down with her dogs, who won't even walk through the wooded area during the day.

Absolutely crackers.

I don't have the fear some of you describe. Except when I lived in a dodgy bit of north London which required keys between the fingers.

soberserene · 20/01/2025 08:24

Maybe through a small copse. Will I have a torch?

There are women on this thread who’ve said they won’t walk through woods in the day.

They’re missing out, imo, but each to their own.

Annoyingsquirrels · 20/01/2025 08:26

I live in a wood so regularly do this anyway. It is pretty rural and feels very safe here.

Yes I agree. Its lovely being in woods alone. Very peaceful.

I live in a very rural area though so maybe that makes a difference.

I adore the solitude of walking in the dark. It wraps around you and the air smells different.

I would never fit in all the steps and the dog walks etc if I didn't do it in the dark in the winter.

NotAnotherBirthday · 20/01/2025 08:28

Yep - assuming there's a reasonable path or clearing through the trees (i.e. I am not stumbling over scrub) and the wood isn't 5 miles wide. I'm not saying I wouldn't get spooked at some point, but that wouldn't stop me.

I'd do it for £500 if I can have the dog with me Grin

CoubousAndTourmalet · 20/01/2025 08:30

Alone, it would depend if it was rural or at the fringes of urban sprawl. Properly rural then yes, it wouldn't bother me. Urban, with potential for people lurking to make illicit transactions no, I wouldn't go near.

With my 50kg dog, I'd probably risk it though.

WinterFoxes · 20/01/2025 08:30

I would. I used to take a shortcut home from work late at night, down an unlit footpath. Once I got to the bit that was pitch black, I used to speed up, and try to feel brave by whispering to myself 'I'm the one who knocks'😂

bugalugs45 · 20/01/2025 08:42

I've got a friend that regularly walks through woods and graveyards at night as finds it peaceful , she does however have 2 Rottweilers 🤣

nonevernotever · 20/01/2025 09:10

I probably would, but then I regularly take the short cut home through the grave yard, and when my horse was alive would often be walking through the fields in the dark and fog.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 20/01/2025 09:13

I'd do it for a tenner probably...

Seapow · 20/01/2025 09:14

I do it for free, so I’d be happy with any amount of money for it 😂

ZippyDoodle · 20/01/2025 09:19

We have woods at the end our garden and 100% I'd go for a walk in the fog. Not a lot to be scared of but we live in a very safe area and I know the woods well.

DH and I walked through as it was getting dark one night and I couldn't believe how many eyes there were in the trees. There were literally hundreds! That was a bit creepy...

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 20/01/2025 09:22

1K of what?

1K of chocolate rainbow buttons - no
1K of bitcoins - yes

LittleGreenDuck · 20/01/2025 09:53

I frequently run and ride through woods, though only during the day.

I'd probably go for it during darkness and fog, particularly on horseback. My little pony has a fair bit of speed on him when he needs to (or when someone rattles the feed bucket), so I'm confident we could outpace any nefarious humans. Not sure about the bear. How fast do bears run?

user2848502016 · 20/01/2025 11:42

Depends if we're talking familiar woods with a proper path or in the middle of a forest and having to climb through brambles etc.

Would do either for 1k though tbf!

The first one probably £50, less if my dog could come too 😂

Disturbia81 · 20/01/2025 12:43

I do it all the time with a torch and without a dog.. the only thing lurking in cold woods is usually animals. More likely to get attacked walking on lit streets.

Sidebeforeself · 20/01/2025 12:52

Yeah go on then. When do you want me?

Birdscratch · 20/01/2025 13:01

No, because I don’t want to walk in shit. If I can’t see my feet, I’m not doing it. I spend a lot of time walking my dog in the woods. I used to walk two dogs in some pretty deserted woodland and countryside. I’ve seen no monsters or ax murderers but an awful lot of dog, fox and horse shit out there.
