Would you walk through a foggy wood at night for 1k?

A bizarre question I admit, but inspired by the foggy weather we had a few weeks ago. Driving at dusk and passing all the bare trees in the mist reminded me of countless Hammer horror films. A legacy of my teenage years waiting for Christopher Lee to pounce on the poor girl alone in the murky woods.

So how much would you have to be paid to walk alone in the woods on a foggy night? In the UK so no bears around. Personally, I don't think you could pay me enough 😂

Ok, so not the woods but I was walking in London one day (maybe early evening, can’t remember) and it was a right “pea souper”. I thought it was so magical. I felt like I was in a Victorian gothic novel.

Yes definitely ~ as long as I could have a stick to check the footing underneath.
Have walked in fogs and mists as a child- and followed farm fences where possible- it’s easy to get disoriented in a fog.

Puddingcloths · 20/01/2025 01:20

Another recent one in some nice woods near my parents’ house. Only 18:26 but winter! My dog loves it so much that I feel obliged to take her!

Same! I’d quite enjoy a nighttime walk through a forest, but I wouldn’t risk being raped for £1k.

Find me a forest in rural Scotland, with nobody about for miles, and I’d happily do it. My local woods in London, no way.

Urban woods are definitely a bit edgy.

Many yrs ago in Bristol there were some urban woods that creeped me out - along a small river

Found out recently it was the site of a ghastly double murder of two children several decades ago.
The perp was never caught.

Eastville (?)
It was pretty but I felt extremely uneasy there.

Marcipix · 20/01/2025 01:24

I’ll do it. I like woods.

I bought my dog a clip on red light because of the cloud inversions this December just gone
Collar light is rechargeable and made by Ruffwear
definitely makes her easy to see in gloomy night walks.

BobbyBiscuits · 20/01/2025 01:28

With a torch, on a path, with a phone. For about ten minutes. 🤣

tbh wouldn't walk through the woods during the day.

I've done it in daylight hours, but admittedly, with a large dog.
A potentially scary looking dog (but in reality as soft as the proverbial), so I felt confident that I wouldn't be approached by anyone unwanted.
At night, no, no, and double no.
So many bad things could happen under the cover of darkness.
From twisting your ankle, and no one around to help you if you couldn't walk, to something more nefarious.
Even if the probability of it all going without a hitch, the nervousness I would likely feel, isn't worth it to me.
Also, I would feel pretty lame if something wrong occurred, and I was judged to be daft to put my in that position.

I am "up for" adventure and maybe even an element of risk, but it'd be a calculated risk.

Having said all that, I have heard that doing something that scares you, is meant to be good for you... ummmm, I'm in the fence about that thought.
Sometimes even my every day normal life can be challenging and a little bit scary... so right now, I feel I have enough stimulation.

I mean I often do that anyway, albeit with a small terrier, and I’ve never seen anything particularly scary, so yes!

I saw a tossing man one sunny Sunday afternoon- that gave me a nasty turn, but I yelled ( as of to an imaginary male) “ There’s a PERVERT HERE!!!!”

I had two dogs with me but still ran like the clappers.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 20/01/2025 01:33

Used to, usually just before dawn so I could take photos back when I had good eyesight. Makes for some incredibly atmospheric images.

Wouldn't do it now as my eyesight is very poor.

desperatedaysareover · 20/01/2025 00:10

Yeah, same. Highlands, Deeside, bring it on. The woods in my hometown, not sure at all. Then again there is the middle-aged invisibility factor, so... When you can march straight into the roughest pub in the city for a quick pee and not a single day-drinker or barman even notices you’ve picked your way through them, plainly not ordering a thing, you think ‘hang on…may become a hired gun yet.’

Middle Aged invisibility cloak is a wonderful thing.

When one is young, men harrass and whistle and flash - it’s lovely being incognito.🥸

Seacatt · 20/01/2025 01:38

I woudn't do it!

I used to hate the loud foghorns they always played on dark, foggy, nights in the horror films too. So ominous!

oakleaffy · 20/01/2025 01:44

deeahgwitch · 20/01/2025 00:25

I wouldn't walk alone to the end of my garden at night. Foggy or not. Smile
But I'm a scaredy cat.

As kids, parents used to have an anthracite store right at the bottom of a large garden

They would ask me to fill up the scuttle in the dark -( probably only 7 pm but dark on a winter’s night)
I was just waiting for the hooded claw or something supernatural to loom out of the darkness and grab my ankles.
I’d read far too many ghost stories.

Beeinalily · 20/01/2025 01:47

Back in the day I think I would have paid that to have Christopher Lee pounce on me!

Ahh now I would say that whenever you hear scary or alarming music in a foggy woods at night you need to avoid that area, it never turns out well. Only use the places with normal cheery music and everything will be fine.

Seems to work in the USA

deeahgwitch · 20/01/2025 08:00

Because you mentioned it @oakleaffy I googled the horrific murders of June (7) and Royston (5) Sheasby in Bristol in 1957.
I had never heard of them.
Nobody was ever convicted of the crimes.
Those beautiful children, oh my goodness.
How did the parents continue living their lives !!!
Strange there hasn't been more publicity about the murders.

Owly11 · 20/01/2025 08:02

Of course- why wouldn't I? I would do it for £100!!!

pinkroses79 · 20/01/2025 08:02

I probably would not do it alone as I have an overactive imagination. I might risk it for quite a bit more money!

CalicoPusscat · 20/01/2025 08:06

rainbowlou · 19/01/2025 23:24

I’m so skint right now that it’s a yes from me 😀

Yes me too! Any villain wouldn't be able to see properly anyway if it's really foggy.

Wouldn't like wild animals however.

Owly11 · 20/01/2025 08:02

Because many women feel nervous alone and even more so in isolated places.
Didn't you know that?

Theydidleaveamark555 · 20/01/2025 08:07

Not nearly enough money to make it worth the fear imho op! 😀

I’d consider it for £25k and would make myself do it for £50k but I’d be utterly terrified!

I love solitary walks with my dog in the countryside but I like open countryside. Woods give me the creeps in daylight! I’ve read far too many crime novels!

MrsSethGecko · 20/01/2025 08:08

I walk through dark woods every morning in the winter for free. Not always foggy though.

AgnesX · 20/01/2025 08:08

Like the Blair Witch project no. If there were paths yes 😊

AlbertCamusflage · 20/01/2025 08:10

I think the fog would make it more appealing, not less.

I would do it if I had my dog with me. The only problem would be me constantly telling myself "Don't think about the Blair Witch Project", so that I would be endlessly thinking about the Blair Witch Project.
