Am I a pearl clutcher -lyrics Chappell Roan, Charlie xcx etc.

I have relatively young daughters and Chappell Roan seems to be very popular with them but some of her lyrics especially if they sing them really do make cringe. Casual for instance features the lyric 'knee deep in the passenger seat eating me out'. Similarly some of the lyrics of Charlie xcxs guess don't leave much to the imagination.

Am I right to feel a little ick and think here should be some advisory lyrics warning? I think if similar lyrics were sung by a male there definitely would be. I know maybe some of at least Chapell Roans songs are about lesbian empowerment but as she has become a global star with appeal to young girls the lyrics of some songs to me are a bit raw. Do you agree?

Gross. I am pearl clutcher too. No need to be so crass.

mids2019 · 18/01/2025 05:32

I just feel that some modern female singers and I include Sabrina Carpenter in this are using the 'sex as empowerment' line in their lyrics and they may be don't appreciate the scale of their young girl can base. As a parent it can be annoying.

I do remember advisory lyrics on CDs back in the day but with streaming this is much more of a challenge. Just be made the lyrics refer to lesbian sex or a woman being very much in control of a relationship doesn't mean the lyrics suddenly aren't explict.

Yeah they are probably just full of shit and fantasising.
I saw a survey done that says gen x's have the most sex out of all the ages. Apparently the younger ones aren't actually doing it they just talk about it.

It's the fact you do have pre teens wanting to get into music naturally and they start singing the lyrics which is horrible. Why aren't there advisory lyrics messages to help parents navigate this so they can listen first.

There seems to be a bit of a fear of pointing out the explicit lyrics as the singer's are women and in some cases lesbian. I am all for same sex relationships but why does lesbian sex get a bit of a pass when it comes to commenting on song lyrics?

You’ve just made me want to check out what the current number one is OP

I wouldn't like that but as someone who grew up in the 90s I used to sing: boom shake the room.

I used to sing
Girl your booty is so round
I just wanna lay you down
Let me take you from behind
I won't cum until it's time
But if I cannot sleep with you
Maybe I could have a taste
Put your niney on my tongue
And your booty on my face
Quite loudly!!!

The words to Barbie girl.
Ludicris, 'I wanna lick you from your head to your toes, I wanna move you from the bed to the floor'
Blue, 'let me lick you up and down till you say stop'

These lyrics have always been around your just more in tune to it now the kids are listening to it. I hadn't a clue what I was actually listening to.

halfshutknife · 18/01/2025 05:56

I don't think there would have been an explicit lyrics warning on Barbie girl but I could be wrong.

mids2019 · 18/01/2025 06:04

Good points maybe it was always there.....

Mind you I would say it was more difficult for a male to use these lyrics and get air play in 2025??

Looking at Chappell Roan on Spotify, her songs do have the E for explicit next to them. I haven't checked them all but I guess the beauty of Spotify is you can create a playlist with kid friendly songs on it quite easily. Easier than burning a CD used to be anyway.

And yes, there have always been artists like that - what about Madonna and her erotica phase?!

maxwellparker77 · 18/01/2025 06:27

Surely it's up to you as the parent to ensure your child is only accessing age appropriate songs? Everything cannot be PG'd down to make it suitable for all.

mids2019 · 18/01/2025 06:42

Good points and I didn't realise Chappell Roan did have explicit lyric warnings on spotify.

Ah reminds me of my childhood. Proudly singing "Put your ass on my face..." and "Don't want no short dick man". 😂

ImmortalSnowman · 18/01/2025 06:48

Spice Girls - Wannabe. No swearing but all about sex including on E. Not about girl friendship over romance at all.
2 Become 1 isnt subtle either

Divinyls - I Touch Myself

Rihanna - Shut up and Drive, S&M, Skin

Olivia Newton John - Physical
(special mention for the pussy wagon Greased Lightning but not sung by a female artist)

Peggy Lee - Fever

All of these were well before WAP hit number 1. None with warnings.

Agree the lyrics are pretty gross but that's not "boom shake the room" - you'd never have had Will Smith saying stuff like that ! Ifs "boom boom boom" by the Outhere Brothers. And there was a clean radio version....surprised you'd even heard this version as a kid!

E-rotic's Oh Max ... preteens in the 90s were blessed 😂

Frankie's Relax came (no pun intended) with no warnings either in the 90s even the BBC couldn't keep it banned.

She should have LTB!

@wherethewildthingis yes! Sorry! My bad. 4am wakes cause serious errors 🤣🤣
In my defence I could have told you it was the others brothers.

To redeem myself can I throw in boys II men the classic love song. 'I'll make love to you' ah so lovely.

My 4 year old singing Barbie girl in homecide bargain was what actually made me stop and listen to the words as she very articulately sang 'you can brush my hair, undress me everywhere ...... You can touch
You can play
If you say, im always yours'

ClemFandango · 18/01/2025 07:26

Homecide bargain! Love this Grin

halfshutknife · 18/01/2025 07:26

Re the E version : I think I had it on a tape/cd that we bought on holiday. Remember the sellers on the beach that sold the cds with the front covers that were just photo copied. It was on an album.
I do remember it being played at school discos but let's hope that was the radio edit 😬

TaggieO · 18/01/2025 07:28

I think if anything, explicit lyrics are less explicit than the 90s. As well as the ones already mentioned I’ll just throw in this gem from another level…. “Let me kick you up and down til you say stop, play with your body baby, make you real hot”

id rather it was female artists talking about their own bodies than men doing it for them. (Robin Thicke, I’m looking at you!!)

NinaOakley · 18/01/2025 07:30

I started cringing at a lot of lyrics once I had kids, including many of my own favourites, and I do agree that we tolerate far too much explicit content both in lyrics and videos. I’d support a Mumsnet campaign on this gladly! (We need an army of Mary Whitehouses!)

Clickncollect · 18/01/2025 07:33

Anyone remember Lil Kim ‘How many licks?’ - check the lyrics out to that one but be prepared!
I was in my 20s when that came out and was shocked even then.

HollyKnight · 18/01/2025 07:35

Remember when 911 told us they were going to lay us flat on the floor and love us a little bit more? And when Janet Jackson wanted people to watch her being screwed against the wall in Any Time, Any Place. 😱

TomWambsgansSwans · 18/01/2025 07:43

@ImmortalSnowman can you signpost which parts of Wannabe are about taking E?

I both loved the Spice Girl as a kid and loved the odd E as a student but I've never picked up on that.
