Siri keeps listening

Dickensives · 17/01/2025 23:15

Anyone else noticed that Siri keeps listening to them recently?!

Both me and DP have noticed the little black swirly ball showing on our phones when we least expect it?!

The other day, we were talking and suddenly Siri set a timer? We had mentioned something about it being 10 mins away, but did not need a timer?!

Just creeping us out a bit

Isn't that entirely the point of Siri - that it's listening to hear your trigger should you say it?

Beeinalily · 18/01/2025 00:08

The stuff that horror films are made of! Get in first and write it yourself, OP.

Creepy little bugger. It'll be listening out for things that shouldn't be discussed, then reporting people to the authorities next.

TheDandyLion · 18/01/2025 01:16

Its the 1 job that its suppose to do.

SnowFrogJelly · 18/01/2025 01:29

Black swirly ball? 🥴

Whataretalkingabout · 18/01/2025 07:57

Go into settings and turn her off!!

biscuitsandbooks · 18/01/2025 08:04

I mean, she's literally designed to do just that.

Why people have her turned on 24/7 (or at all) is beyond me. It's same with Alexa though they seem wildly popular on here for some reason!

Dickensives · 18/01/2025 08:25

I didn’t realise you could turn it off?

It’s handy for driving to just say to call people.

but usually you have to say ‘hey Siri’ it’s doesn’t usually just act by itself!

this is lighthearted by the way, had iPhones for years and only just noticed it

It’s listening constantly so it can pick up when that’s said. It is always listening.

RedRiverShore5 · 18/01/2025 08:41

Sometimes they pick up very similar words to Siri and Alexa from the TV but they are listening for the word

RabbitsRock · 18/01/2025 08:47

Mine reacts to the opening credits of Gogglebox - made me jump the first time!

Thebogopogopanpacificgrandprix · 18/01/2025 08:59

Turn it off then.

How do you think it picks up "hey Siri" if it's not always listening?

I find it utterly bonkers that people willingly have these listening devices turned on in their homes 24/7, but it seems to be perfectly normal nowadays Confused

This

it amazes me how many people think any such thing isn't listening all the time.

Runfaraway · 18/01/2025 13:56

Recently got a new phone, though it’s an older model. Just checked the settings and the default (Listen for ‘Hey Siri’) is off.

BlunderMifflin · 18/01/2025 14:42

You don't even have to say "hey siri", you can just say "Siri".... or in my case you can be saying sorry to someone and you'll hear it respond with "mm-hmm?"

Quoting my own post to add that I have it on because I find it really useful! I often want to add something to a list, set a reminder or ask it who's singing this song.

This for sure. I see that devices like Alexa can help the elderly or disabled but otherwise I don't want one

ElleneAsanto · 18/01/2025 15:03

I don’t think Siri is listening when the phone is locked - I have auto-lock set to 3 minutes. I have to “raise to wake” before Hey Siri gets a response.

(I use Siri set to Irish voice 1 - he sounds like Graham Norton.)

My phone has a setting ‘Allow Siri when locked’ that you can toggle on or off.

RedRiverShore5 · 18/01/2025 22:13

I have never noticed it happening with the iPhone or iPad, when it happens it's always on the HomePod that Siri pipes up

I’ve previously been torn apart on here for pages and pages for suggesting our devices are listening to us. I take it for granted that someone can always listen in, I’m not doing anything that I care about someone else hearing though and have 3 Alexas round the house. I first ‘confirmed’ (in my mind) a few years ago that my phone was listening to me after having a discussion with my friend, and then had fb put ads up for a product relating to our conversation. I was told I was being biased and loads of people think the same after seeing coincidental ads after a discussion. Except my discussion was with my sister in person about my dad I’d been nc with for 29 years, and she told me he was in hospital in Thailand with malaria. 10 mins later I was getting ads on fb for anti malaria tablets from a pharmaceutical company in Phuket. That’s just me being paranoid, right?

frockandcrocs · 18/01/2025 22:26

Wish mine would, tbh. He's been bloody useless lately, then he gets upset when I swear at him.

I am both elderly and disabled, but I don’t have an Alexa and Siri is turned off as soon as (on the rare occasions that) I get a new iPad or iPhone.

I do live with another person, though, who could rescue me if necessary.
