Ryanair to scrap paper boarding passes - passengers will need to use their phone

Are print off Ryanair boarding passes really being scrapped? - Which? News

40% of people still use paper boarding passes. I am one of those people. I do have it on my phone but I do have a worry / what if with phone power, losing phone etc - where as having a paper copy is a good back up.

What happens if your phone dies?

Ryanair hasn’t yet answered this question fully. Though it has said that it can print boarding passes on the gate if necessary, based on passport information, it did not clarify what would happen if a traveller’s phone dies before they are able to pass through security in an airport where Ryanair has removed the check-in desks.
We contacted Ryanair to check if there are plans to introduce any fees for boarding passes printed at the gate, but the airline did not respond.

Flown with Ryanair a bit recently - it's fine. I can see issues at airports for people who may have phone issues, especially power - and after a flight delay. Power can go down quickly.

And if so - where does that leave travellers?

How would it work if you had your passport, boarding passes, money, etc in your handbag which got lost or stolen? It's just the same. You have to go to seek help and advice and there will be protocols in place. In fact, probably simpler with a phone. You either get it repaired or if not repairable, you buy a new one. Upload the apps and login on your new phone, and you're up and running again in a pretty short space of time. Probably quicker and easier than trying to deal with bureaucracy of losing "physical" items.

How easy is it to buy a new phone abroad? I’m guessing you couldn’t have a contract phone. So you’d end up buying a payg which you don’t need as when you get home due to being on a contract you’ll end up with a new contract phone/your phone insurance will provide a new one.

dd goes abroad on her own a lot and is very accident prone with phones.

guess it’s worth taking an old one away with you and then at least you can try and get a sim for your spare phone if needed.

So use a paper copy, I'm sure Ryanair would be happy to print one for you for £££

If a paper copy is an option then OP should
be able to print her own as she can at present

Google Fascinating Aida, Cheap Flights - hilarious song! It’ll be just something else they can charge a tenner for!

But you can't use anyone else's passport now because they scan you at the same time on the gates (theoretically).

So I really don't understand why when you buy your flight there isn't a HO/flight centre database that files that to your passport number, so you just scan the passport at the gates and it holds your tickets. If someone nicks the passport they can't use it because it won't match their face and they won't be able to "see" the flights on your passport, it would all be on these databases. Would streamline the whole system and enable security to see where everyone is.

That might be possible in the future. Let's get the QRs working for everyone first though. There may also be Data Protection issues (possibly) and the agreement of all departure countries would be required. Some may not want to join that club. Also passports are not required when travelling within UK and with the exception of guess who? Ryanair, between UK and Republic of Ireland.

It's not impossible, but

Getabloominmoveon · 17/01/2025 14:46

Another 60+ traveller here, fly for work every week, agreeing with pps. Once you get used to it it’s so much easier travelling with your tickets etc on a phone. Just try it a few times and you will never go back to paper! And in the process you will learn more about how your phone works (finding your digital railcard isn’t really a faff, when it’s in your Trainline app).

Technological change always meets resistance (remember warnings against microwaves and PCs when they first arrived). But we are in a digital age, so best get with the program or get left behind!

Why do people fly with Ryanair? It certainly isn't convenience, because they charge for all the bitty extras, always fly to airports an hour+ outside of major cities and the planes are uncomfortable.

People choose Ryanair because its cheap. Why is it cheap? Because they make decisions like this.

Anyone who doesn't have a smart phone, or wants to opt for an airline who accepts printed passes can still do that - with one of the many other (pricier) airlines.

Edited

I live in Ireland and Ryanair flies to airports Aer lingus or other airlines don't, and it goes from the regular airports. Its also much more reliable than aer lingus imo.

I haven't printed a boarding pass in years, but if you are that worried about your phone getting lost or whatever why not print out the pass as a back up? If your printer is good the pass should print out fine, and if its not good quality at least the staff will see that you have checked in.

It is an issue for people who don't have smartphones.

StMarie4me · 17/01/2025 14:50

Carry a portable charger. You can easily check which ones are acceptable in your have luggage. I never travel without one!

In May last year my phone broke on holiday. How will that work if you don't have a phone!!

Other countries have shops where you can buy a phone!

Don't get me wrong.
I can use technology very well

I am just a real fan of paper copies. I do get a bit annoyed when more and more things go digital - e.g. car parking and having to use yet another app

I avoid Ryanair like the plague anyway, their attitude stinks

This 👆

Other airlines are available.

CowBuoy · 17/01/2025 14:54

I shouldn't really slag off ryanair but it's hard to resist. 😀
I too am Irish and remember having to travel to the UK in the late 80s/early 90s by coach and ferry cos aer Lingus were charging hundreds, even back then, so undoubtedly if they still had a monopoly today it would be costing thousands!

Hoover2025 · 17/01/2025 14:58

Oh great. So we just have lots of planes now where everyone is carrying battery packs of varying quality, origin and condition.

Sounds a fabulous idea

I choose it because I don't have any choice from the airport I fly from. And it's capital cities I go to with Ryanair, hardly middle of nowhere.

What if you don't have a smartphone? My father has a very simple flip phone and wouldn't be able to put a boarding pass on it. I hope they have something in place for older passengers who can't use modern technology.

Bill Gates is nearly 70, just saying.

Sinkintotheswamp · 17/01/2025 15:02

taxguru · 17/01/2025 14:05

This! I can't understand people who say they've an old phone that won't "do" apps. It must be pre-historic. OH has an "old" phone which must be nearly 10 years old and apps work fine on it.

But even if you have a prehistoric one, why not buy a new one. You can get a simple one on a contract for less than a £50 up front cost and less than a tenner per month for the airtime/mobile data etc. Probably works out cheaper to buy a new phone and use Ryanair than stay in the dark ages and pay more for your flight with a more expensive airline.

Not everyone can or wants to spend money on new tech. My phone is four years old and ticks over fairly well. I don't have any intention of wasting resources and money and buying a new one for ages.

cakeorwine · 17/01/2025 13:42

We were at a venue recently where the paper passes scanned much better than the ones on the phone.

I also forgot to download the actual ticket and we struggled to get mobile phone reception.

Take a screen shot of it and keep.

Then you will have to accept that there are certain things you won’t be able to do.

They already charge £20 if you need them to print a boarding pass for you!

WishyyWashyy · 17/01/2025 15:07

Well they've just lost 2 frequent customers, my elderly parents don't have mobiles and usually travel with Ryan Air 6-8 times a year.

Another example of ageism 😤

My autistic adult DS does not use a phone at all, not even a flip phone. How is he meant to fly in future?

Sounds like he needs another person flying with him anyway?

cakeorwine · 17/01/2025 13:52

I still like paper tickets for trains as well.

Like not need. I liked it when there was an interval before the main picture at the cinema and you could buy a Cornetto, doesn’t mean that I stopped going to the cinema!

garlictwist · 17/01/2025 15:17

Many people (me included) don't have access to a printer so it's so much easier to use a phone. Plus the last flight I took I booked it on the same day I flew so would not have had time to find one. My phone is crap and the battery doesn't last but I always have a battery bank when I travel so no issues there.

It's quite ageist of you to assume that because your parents don't have mobiles that this is usual for older people.
Most older people I know would manage this - and those that might struggle would probably not be travelling alone.
