Ryanair to scrap paper boarding passes - passengers will need to use their phone

Are print off Ryanair boarding passes really being scrapped? - Which? News

40% of people still use paper boarding passes. I am one of those people. I do have it on my phone but I do have a worry / what if with phone power, losing phone etc - where as having a paper copy is a good back up.

What happens if your phone dies?

Ryanair hasn’t yet answered this question fully. Though it has said that it can print boarding passes on the gate if necessary, based on passport information, it did not clarify what would happen if a traveller’s phone dies before they are able to pass through security in an airport where Ryanair has removed the check-in desks.
We contacted Ryanair to check if there are plans to introduce any fees for boarding passes printed at the gate, but the airline did not respond.

Flown with Ryanair a bit recently - it's fine. I can see issues at airports for people who may have phone issues, especially power - and after a flight delay. Power can go down quickly.

And if so - where does that leave travellers?

In May last year my phone broke on holiday. How will that work if you don't have a phone!!

Did you holiday alone? You can add boarding passes to your companions phone too as a backup.

You're more likely to lose a paper pass than smash your phone.

There are some cheap low capacity ones that are similar in size and shape to a large pen, so very easy to carry. My "carry around" one is about the shape and size of a large cigar, so just pops into my pocket and weight is barely noticeable. I have a bigger one for long trips/days out/holidays etc., but even that is roughly the shape/size of a cigarette packet, so still fits into a pocket.

You do you :)

How would it work if you had your passport, boarding passes, money, etc in your handbag which got lost or stolen? It's just the same. You have to go to seek help and advice and there will be protocols in place. In fact, probably simpler with a phone. You either get it repaired or if not repairable, you buy a new one. Upload the apps and login on your new phone, and you're up and running again in a pretty short space of time. Probably quicker and easier than trying to deal with bureaucracy of losing "physical" items.

When we go abroad on holiday, I have the ferry tickets printed out, accommodation printed out, insurance printed etc.

I can do it on the phone - but I do like the paper copy. It's in a holiday folder in the car

I do carry a power bank. My phone can go through its charge and a powerbank’s charge in the course of a day.

(why yes, I do need a new phone, but it cost me £600 and is only 2 years old so I’m annoyed about it)

Can you not take it to a Timpsons to get a new battery fitted? We had one done and it only cost around £60.

Backed up on my Email - so I could just download from an email again.

Nothing to stop you printing things out for peace of mind. Have to admit, it's what I do, but I never actually use the paper printouts, these days I just scan or swipe on the phone. But then I've always been a "plan B" and "plan C" type of person for peace of mind.

If they stole my handbag, then my phone would be stolen too. And I couldn’t travel without a passport either way,

But re boarding passes - I will have one copy in my hand luggage rucksack and one in the front zip pocket of my check in case. I will also put one debit card separately fro my purse when travelling.

Separately - thanks for the battery tip! I will ask at Timpsons 🙂

I can't be bothered because right now it wouldn't add anything to my life as I've no plans on downloading apps and depending on my phone unless I really need to and right now I don't.

It's not about the cost - I can afford to go out and get an all bells and whistle phone. I just choose not to as the phone I have is perfectly adequate for what I need it for.

If, when I next travel by plane, I have to download an app for the boarding pass I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. That might mean a new phone. I prefer paper and will continue with that as long as I can.

My current railcard is accessible via the Trainline app. It is a complete faff having to find it when a conductor is on the train. It runs out 7th February and I'll be getting a physical card that I can keep in my purse for that reason.

Is it oneplus? Mine started doing that so I switched to Samsung. They used to be good.
No way to save it without splashing quite a sum🙄

SheilaFentiman · 17/01/2025 14:25

There is also a bit of a contradiction between “keep your valuables out of sight” and “have your phone out to do everything” IMO.

Inlimboin50s · 17/01/2025 14:25

I'm new to apps. If I was to screenshot the flight ticket,so it's in with my photos, can that be scanned and they would let me through? I know it's an odd question but I could manage if I could do this.

If you are flying with other people who have phones you can share the screenshots of all the boarding passes with each other to safeguard against one person having a dead battery or a broken / lost / stolen phone.

When you can get from Manchester to Limoges without using Ryanair for less than £25 then you have a point.

Ryanair is the airplane equivalent of a bus.
Cheap and generally gets you where you want to be on time.

If you want bells and whistles you will pay a lot more.

My dh won't use them.
I fly back and forth and know their website as well as they do, I never pay more than the base line price. I usually sit exactly where I want.

😊I like your DH.

Yes. I always screenshot the boarding pass as it's quicker to find in my photos than it is to open the wallet.

mitogoshigg · 17/01/2025 14:30

I get what you are saying but things have moved on. You mention ferry tickets - we didn't need a ticket last year because they use numberplate recognition. I find my phone convenient but airlines should have a system in place for genuine cases where a phone cannot be use eg broken phone, you can buy a cheap phone with a payg sim if you don't have a smartphone

How does he book and pay for a Ryanair flight at the moment? Don't you have to do it online?

As a for example, let's say he was off to visit a relative who lives in Spain. I would book the flight and print the boarding pass etc. I would take him to the airport, support him to check in, and wave him off as he went through to security. He would then be met at the other end by his aunt.

He can go through security alone. It's the Internet and phones that he won't use.

I have never read so much catastrophising in my life!

All airlines will do this eventually not just Ryanair, so the moaners can go to the back of the class now!

Be prepared. If you think something will happen to stop you using your phone, have a backup in place. Obviously if you're on your own you might have some bother, but research what you would do if that happened. Surely that's what everyone does?

If travelling with someone, email the screenshots of the QR to each other, and everyone travelling together should have all QRs on each phone. Easy.

Battery pack. No brainer. + charging cable to be sure, to be sure.

Older age? That is just so ageist. If some older people are incapable of using a phone or navigating all the bells, whistles and airports they would probably not be travelling alone anyway.

Is 67F and 76M old and incapable? That's us and we travel throughout Europe with QRs all the time. We do the above with screenshots and swopping QRs etc.

No more moans. Nearly everyone has a phone of some sort now. When you were worrying about how to use it when they first appeared, well that was a waste of time wasn't it? Same with anything new, takes a little while to figure it out but it's made easy to be easy very quickly.

Happy travelling all.

But you can't use anyone else's passport now because they scan you at the same time on the gates (theoretically).

So I really don't understand why when you buy your flight there isn't a HO/flight centre database that files that to your passport number, so you just scan the passport at the gates and it holds your tickets. If someone nicks the passport they can't use it because it won't match their face and they won't be able to "see" the flights on your passport, it would all be on these databases. Would streamline the whole system and enable security to see where everyone is.

Sometimes there are body length gates so you wouldn’t be able to pass a phone back to the person behind you (I think this is true for Eurostar)
