I've just been given one. No instructions. Yes, I know I'm ninety years too late to this party. 😂

Anyway. DH and I would like to know if the butter goes on the outside of the bread or the inside.

And how long do they take?

And what are your favourite fillings?

The butter goes on the outside of both slices and cook for around 2 or three mins

Outside of the bread. But another tip is v thinly spread mayo instead of butter also makes it go nicely crispy.

Favourite fillings are ham, cheese and mushroom, ham and cheese, left over roast dinner including veg, our boxing day toasties are immense. Beware beans and tomatoes, the water content makes them hotter than the sun.

Bjorkdidit · 15/01/2025 14:59

Make sure there is plenty of filling - this helps fill out the sandwich and the bread have better contact with the plates.

No need for precise timings - just put it in there until it looks like a toastie. Careful though - filling will be hot.

Hungryheart2025 · 15/01/2025 15:01

I butter on the outside, my DS doesn't put any butter on.

My favourite fillings are old reliables like ham and cheese, odds and ends like meat balls in gravy, or other leftovers, and for dessert, marmalade or jam.

I like cheese and onion in my toasties
Butter on outside of bread. Cook until bread is nicely browned

murasaki · 15/01/2025 15:05

Our Jan 2nd toastie post New Year's day dinner, as we were away at XMAS, was roast pheasant, dauphinoise spuds, spinach, sliced pigs in blankets and sliced gouda.

Incredibly messy, but so good.

GasPanic · 15/01/2025 15:05

Cheese is the glue that holds any good toastie together.

If you are not a fan of cheese you will struggle to make stuff that doesn't fall apart.

OnceMoreWithAttitude · 15/01/2025 15:06

I don’t butter the outside , I like cheese with lime pickle, or kimchi, or ham, or tuna. Or tomato, or a spoon of pasta sauce … anything that goes with melted cheese. Sautéed mushrooms.

murasaki · 15/01/2025 15:06

Also, while white sliced is good, sourdough is even better.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 15/01/2025 15:07

Consider how hot your filling might get - I don't mind the scorchingly hot fillings, I just leave those toasties to sit for a little longer before going near them. Favourites -

Cheese & onion (chop one onion and freeze for later - raid it for a few pieces when you need, they'll defrost as the sandwich cooks)

"Pizza" - tomato puree, onion, thinly sliced peperami, cheese

Bolognaise - again, freeze a little spare when you next make spagbol, just make sure you defrost before use.

GasPanic · 15/01/2025 15:10

Yeah I would beware the "cooking capability".

Stuff like bacon and sausages I would normally do up in the airfryer then add to the toastie.

Expecting it to cook frozen sausages in any reasonable time is asking for a horrible case of gut rot, bacon is maybe doable but still a bit risky.

But stuff like raw veg and maybe even frozen veg is ok so long as it is thinly sliced and has good thermal contact with the cheese.

Agree, all our pigs in blankets and meats are were cooked. And cheese is an essential.

No-one expects uncooked meat to become cooked in a few minutes inside bread inside a toastie machine do they?

They toast the bread, melt the cheese and heat cooked food if you're lucky, they're not intended to 'cook'.

Well we have a toastie maker virgin here, so just ensuring no food poisoning!

All very useful comments. Thank you so much.

I had no idea that buttering outside was a thing, might have to try it, next time I go through a toasted sandwich phase

I butter inside - i grew up on cheap food so I love a plastic cheese filling as it goes all gooey

Omggg as if I needed an excuse to abandon my diet 🤭

Floralnomad · 15/01/2025 15:31

I mainly make small triangular cheese omelettes in mine now .

murasaki · 15/01/2025 15:36

We often do soup and toastie Mondays, say 2 weeks out of 4 as it's easy. Home made soup, so yesterday I made pea and gammon, and DP did the toasties, which were sourdough, ham, sliced gouda (pre sliced so semi plastic), comte in one and in one brie. Yum.

They go well with soup as a full meal. But then we make a lot of soup.

KaySam · 15/01/2025 15:56

I love cheese, pepperoni and jalapeño in mine.

ExtraDisorganised · 15/01/2025 16:11

You can cook little sponge cakes in it, make a one egg sponge mix, butter the trays and get little triangular cakes.

onwardandupwards · 15/01/2025 16:42

Cooked diced streaky bacon, crispy onions, brie and some cranberry sauce.
My ds loves cheese, cooked chicken and some honey drizzled inside.
