Why don’t electric toothbrushes sell their toothbrush with an adapter?

I don’t know of any house that has a two prong plug in the UK to charge up their toothbrush. Means we have to go out and buy an adapter. No they aren’t expensive but it’s a PITA to get one especially if you’ve just got home and realises you need one

Because we've bought one adapter in goodness how long and had to replace each of our toothbrushes many times. I certainly don't want a new adapter every time.
And now we've got a fancy bathroom cabinet with a charger in it so we only need the adapter when travelling for longer than the toothbrush charge lasts.

This. Like phones, kindles etc. People buy far more of the devices than the plugs and adaptors so it's a way of reducing unnecessary electronics, and cost.

RobinMcfly · 15/01/2025 15:05

same issue, ive got to get the adapter

mamapants · 15/01/2025 15:19

@Soubriquet are you sure it doesn't fit? You have the exact same shaver plug as me and toothbrush chargers fit.
They fit in both sides although the 230 side is tge correct one. The plastic gets pushed in by the prongs normal plugs have them too. It's a safety mechanism to stop random objects being shoved in

@DreamW3aver OP has different voltage to yours: hers show 230 and 115 whereas yours seem to be the same as mine 240 and 110 . My oral B plugs into the 240v socket but not the 110v one.

UK bathrooms don't have normal 3 pin sockets so I have an adapter outside the bathroom where the other electrical toothbrush charges if we both need to charge at same time.

The voltage won't affect whether the prongs can fit in the holes though will it?, mine will go in either

Bignanna · 15/01/2025 16:00

Sorties it’s really difficult to push the two prongs into the adapter plug. As everyone says , they should come with adapter or 3 pin plug.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/01/2025 16:09

But that means we always forget to take an adapter with us if we go and stay anywhere in the UK

Our adaptor lives with our travel stuff now so we're less likely to forget it.

I'll be pleased when I can get a usb charger though that'll work anywhere with no bulky plugs or adapters.

BertieBotts · 15/01/2025 16:42

Shaver socket/plug is not the same as the EU plug/socket though they are similar. The shaver plug is shorter and the pins are very slightly closer together, although the Europlug is flexible enough it will fit into a shaver socket.

You might struggle to fit a shaver plug into a Euro adapter because the holes are slightly too far apart. Where they have the dual holes that can also fit a flat-pin US style plug in then you'll usually fit it fine but the contact might not be great. You should use a shaver plug adapter rather than an EU > UK adapter if possible.

Some shaver plug sockets have differently shaped holes for the two different voltages to prevent devices being plugged into the wrong side.

I agree it's super annoying. When we redid our bathroom we had a mirror installed that has a shaver / toothbrush port on the inside. Really handy. But that means we always forget to take an adapter with us if we go and stay anywhere in the UK 🙈

Yes that’s what I have an toothbrush fit perfectly as does a shaver.

ReignOfError · 15/01/2025 11:27

I have a double shaver socket in the bathroom so it's not an issue for me, but every electric toothbrush I've ever bought came with a UK plug to put the two-pin thing into.

Every electric toothbrush I've ever bought (Oral B and superdrug, several of each) did NOT have a plug.

OP, I've often wondered this. We don't have enough plugs and sometimes it's a fight for the charger!

In case this is useful to anyone else, I got a shaver plug to euro plug adapter online - very useful and means you don't need to plug 1 adapter into another when you're travelling.

DazedAndConfused321 · 15/01/2025 17:22

I've never not had a 2 prong socket in the bathroom, even in old houses.

MoreHairyThanScary · 15/01/2025 17:49

One of the best investments I ever made was a permenant charging point for the electric toothbrush ( sits on the wall where the old shaver socket was).

Really not expensive but so much better than all the faf with adaptors etc.

StamppotAndGravy · 15/01/2025 17:58

The worst is they are actually British plugs! They don't work in everywhere Europe because the pins are wider and further apart then EU ones. The Braun and OralB chargers sold in Europe have a different plug that doesn't work in UK bathroom sockets

Soubriquet · 15/01/2025 13:02

This is our shaver socket

No I’m not advertising anything and the toothbrush I bought was oral B. It cost me £25. Though technically it cost me nothing cos it was a gift card

I love the poster who has adapted their bathroom to have a charger

We have that socket and definitely fits an Oral B toothbrush!

Beautifulweeds · 15/01/2025 18:40

Lol I know! We have 2 adapters now finally. X

Nourishinghandcream · 15/01/2025 18:58

Our new build has two shaver points and a USB point in each bathroom.
One shaver point per room is on the wall and the other is in the bathroom cabinet (along with the USB).

ReignOfError · 15/01/2025 23:44

Still surprised by those who didn't get three pin adaptors included with their toothbrush. I bought this brush shortly before Christmas, and it came with the charging cable, the adaptor plug, and a travel case, as per the photo.
My husband bought a new brush earlier last year, and again, cable and three pin adaptor were included.
I've never bought an adaptor and I have at least four (I just checked one drawer, there may be more).

Why don’t electric toothbrushes sell their toothbrush with an adapter?

That's what I was just thinking.

I've never lived in a house that did have one and I've lived in 15 houses. Also none of my friends or family have one.

NotAnotherBirthday · 16/01/2025 07:23

I have also only lived in places with shaver sockets but as inbuilt batteries get better and better I wonder if we'll see them less and less?

However, I changed my shaver plug for the wall mounted toothbrush stand pictured above. It's actually very easy to do if any of you fancy having a go.

MulberryPeony · 16/01/2025 07:33

Our bought adapter stopped working the other day. It just needed a new fuse but we’ve had countless oral-b and Phillips and not once have they come with an adapter so we decided to buy another adapter. Never seen a shaver socket in a domestic UK bathroom. I kind of thought they were old fashioned actually so quite surprised that a PP thought all modern bathrooms had one. None of us uses an electric shaver though so for the once a month charging of toothbrushes it’s never been an issue to be fair.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2025 08:37

That's exactly why they shouldn't be included.

I'd be quite pleased to have the option of buying the toothbrush without a charger even, we've quite a lot of old ones.
