Why don’t electric toothbrushes sell their toothbrush with an adapter?

I don’t know of any house that has a two prong plug in the UK to charge up their toothbrush. Means we have to go out and buy an adapter. No they aren’t expensive but it’s a PITA to get one especially if you’ve just got home and realises you need one

We just redid our bathroom and got a wall mounted toothbrush charger. It’s brilliant - no more cables in the bathroom.

Because we've bought one adapter in goodness how long and had to replace each of our toothbrushes many times. I certainly don't want a new adapter every time.
And now we've got a fancy bathroom cabinet with a charger in it so we only need the adapter when travelling for longer than the toothbrush charge lasts.

Mine too, we used to have a shaver socket in the bathroom but we don’t now. I don’t think they are as common as they used to be.

I was literally thinking this the other day- we do have one but the bathroom is pretty old and I was wondering if they're still a thing and if not, why not? Electric shavers gone out of fashion?

Are you sure it doesn't fit your shaver socket?!

No it doesn’t! Even dh tried. The only thing I can think of is, that maybe we are supposed to remove a plastic bit inside the shaver socket. So remove the front cover and then removes plastic bit. I only think that cos the holes are partially covered

This is our shaver socket

No I’m not advertising anything and the toothbrush I bought was oral B. It cost me £25. Though technically it cost me nothing cos it was a gift card

I love the poster who has adapted their bathroom to have a charger

It's like phones not including chargers now!

Very annoying.

That should be banned!! New phone should always come with chargers

There was originally a shaver socket in the bathroom here but irritatingly it was taken out at some point so I plug my toothbrush in to charge in another room. I bought a shaving socket to 3 pin plug adapter when I got my first electric toothbrush and have never needed to replace it so I’m glad they aren’t provided as that’d be hugely wasteful. In my experience, the adapters last forever, the toothbrushes don’t.

I think my current toothbrush may be USB anyway.

Lovelysummerdays · 15/01/2025 13:31

I put in a shaver outlet/ toothbrush charging socket when. I redid the bathroom about ten years ago. It was pretty cheap. You can also get them in the side of those light up mirrors.

Jabtastic · 15/01/2025 13:33

This thread is a gem as I didn't even know adaptors existed! I've just ordered one thank you!

Any decent modern uk bathroom will have a suitable power shaver port built in.

Lovelysummerdays · 15/01/2025 13:41

I have a similar socket and although holes look the same toothbrush charger only fits in toothbrush side. You could probably update the front OP

ElaborateCushion · 15/01/2025 13:42

I think they're changing. My Suri toothbrush has a USB-C cable.

Which actually is a bit annoying for me as we have the two pin shaver sockets in our bathroom that I now can't use!

Oral-B Pro 3 3500 C/A White Electric Toothbrush + Travel Case
£35 instead of £65 in the sale.

Oh weird, so the same model as mine then just a different colour. Maybe I’ll get in touch with customer service as mine definitely didn’t come with an adapter!

WongKarWhy · 15/01/2025 13:44

It's very annoying, but my latest one had a USB cable, which makes life easier.

hannahtr · 15/01/2025 13:44

Its a pain but can easily be overcome - When we moved in to our current house (which doesnt have a two pin socket in the bathroom) I just bought a normal three pin plug and rewired it.

We now charge our toothbrushes on the landing where there is a normal socket. After 5+ years we've never had any problem charging toothbrushes every 4-5 weeks. Its not especially hard to rewire a plug - we were taught how to do it in school

My DH uses an electric shaver but it’s got a USB plug!

HaddyAbrams · 15/01/2025 13:46

I've never lived in a house with a shaver socket in the bathroom, and never bought a toothbrush that came with the adaptor. They are cheap enough though.

I don't know anyone who needs a shaver socket in the bathroom either. They either wet shave with a disposable type razor, or have a rechargeable one that can be charged anywhere.

We have the 2pin adapter plugged in on the landing, thr toothbrushes, water flosser and my epilator can all plug in there. DCs electric razors have USB plugs.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 15/01/2025 13:49

I don’t like having to charge up my brush outside the bathroom so when we redid our bathroom we got a socket fitted

I prefer charging mine out of the bathroom after reading about pee and poo being sprayed all over the place in the bathroom!

DreamingOfASilentNight · 15/01/2025 14:02

Every house I've lived in in London had a shaver socket in the bathrooms. It can't be that uncommon.

WildCherryBlossom · 15/01/2025 14:11

Shaver sockets are a basic safety feature. Pretty much any product designed for bathroom use like epilators, toothbrushes etc have 2 prong plugs to fit shaver sockets. I've had shaver sockets in at least my last 3 homes (can't remember further back than that). In the most recent bathroom we re-did we installed a wall mounted toothbrush socket as po mentioned (as well as a shaver socket). It's great as toothbrushes are then put away neatly 😄

AnneOfCleavage · 15/01/2025 14:41

@DreamW3aver OP has different voltage to yours: hers show 230 and 115 whereas yours seem to be the same as mine 240 and 110 . My oral B plugs into the 240v socket but not the 110v one.

UK bathrooms don't have normal 3 pin sockets so I have an adapter outside the bathroom where the other electrical toothbrush charges if we both need to charge at same time.
