The comedian Tony Slattery who was a series regular on "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" in the UK has passed away from a heart attack. He was 65.

I read an interview he gave in the past few years and thought that he was on the way back to performing but god love him, he had a terrible time with drink and drugs.

May he rest in peace.

I had a schoolgirl crush on him when he was in a show called Behind the Bike Sheds so when he rocked up on Who's Line Is It, Anyway? it was good to find out he was funny and clever as well. I remember listening to an interview with him years ago, before all the stuff about his troubles came out, where he said that he was at heart an academic, studious kind of person and his comedy career had left that side of him unfulfilled. I think a lot of people who go into comedy have that problem. I remember an elderly Jonathan Miller saying that it was his deepest regret that he didn't stay in medicine where he could have led a more profound life.

I hope he is at peace now.

So do I, he was a troubled soul. No age though, may he rest in peace.

whaddayawannado · 14/01/2025 15:25

Oh how sad. Sad

MaggieFS · 14/01/2025 15:27

Such sad news.

Adding my name to the list of those who had a teenage crush!

ThatsWhatImTalkinAbout · 14/01/2025 15:27

I loved the show. But, I found him to be awkward/uncomfortable and appeared like he didn’t want to be on the show.
Very sad to hear though.

SilenceInside · 14/01/2025 15:36

I think every one else has already said everything that I thought on hearing the news today. I also had a crush on him in the 90s and loved him on WLIIA and in Peter's Friends. So sad that his life was so affected by the awful actions of others and the challenges of managing his mental health. 65 is no age at all really these days.

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/01/2025 15:38

At peace now. RIP Tony.Thanks

Thebogopogopanpacificgrandprix · 14/01/2025 15:40

I hope he's at peace from his demons now.

SabreIsMyFave · 14/01/2025 15:42

Awww, sad. Sad I heard this about an hour ago. Only 65 too. Yikes! Shock

R.I.P. Tony Slattery.

Cheguevarahamster · 14/01/2025 15:50

Oh that's so sad. He was a brilliant comic and actor. May he rest in peace.

25GB · 14/01/2025 15:51

Very sad to hear. I didn’t know about his troubles.

fluffiphlox · 14/01/2025 15:56

I saw him twice in a musical called ‘Radio Times’. It really was a tour de force on his part.
Life and the passage of time hadn’t been kind to him and I was shocked to see how spectacularly he had lost his looks. All very sad.

derxa · 14/01/2025 16:06

So incredibly handsome. I know that shouldn’t be important but he just was. This has actually caused me to have a little weep. I’m glad he had a loving partner who stood by him for decades. RIP

RudalDweller · 14/01/2025 16:30

He's actually passed away following a heart attack but he's now at peace from his demons.

ThePolarBearWhoLostHisCrown · 14/01/2025 16:34

Very sad news. I hoped he would make a full comeback. I met him decades ago and he was absolutely charming. Rest well Tony.

ArchMemory · 14/01/2025 16:41

Another who had a crush on him back in the day. Then he seemed to disappear from my radar and I remember his mental health and addiction problems becoming public a few years ago although I didn’t watch the documentary.

Very sad that he’s died. 65 is really no age. And terrible also that he suffered sexual abuse as a child.

Phase2 · 14/01/2025 18:35

Oh lovely Tony Slattery, I'm so sorry. RIP.

DonutDogBasket · 14/01/2025 18:50

Tony Slattery’s Rambling Club is a brilliant podcast. There aren’t that many episodes as it was a relatively new thing. For those who liken eclectic, erudite conversation with a bit of Tony’s ascerbic cynicism thrown it, it’s well worth listening to. The most recent episode only aired last Friday.

Massive hugs to Mark, the family, all his friends, wider friends - and to us. 😔

SoldierofFortune · 14/01/2025 18:53

Yesterday evening, Tony Slattery having not crossed my mind in 10 years, I saw a picture of the cast of "Peter's Friends" and asked DH "What happened to Tony Slattery? Did he die? We looked him up and found out he was alive and well.

I feel guilty now, like I somehow caused this...

DonutDogBasket · 14/01/2025 18:56

And thank you OP for starting this thread.

I was lucky enough to see him in the Cambridge Revue at the Edinburgh Fringe Festical when I was a teenager. My ex husband also shared a flat with him when they were working on a play together. We met up 10 years after that during the run of Privates on Parade and Tony remembered him and that summer.

All that energy. All that intelligence. He will be missed more than he could ever imagine.

Defiantlynot41 · 14/01/2025 19:00

So sad. I absolutely loved him in Whose Line ... and That's Love, also with Neil Pearson, another of my former crushes

JaneJeffer · 14/01/2025 19:02

Rest in peace Tony

rewilded · 14/01/2025 19:15

Rest in Peace Tony Slattery. Thoughts are with his family and friends.

A very talented man and I was also bewitched by him in the 90s was very sorry to hear about the troubles that he had when watching his documentary.

echt · 14/01/2025 19:19

So sad to see this.

He's of my generation and he was amazing when he first burst on the scene.

Drivingoverlemons · 14/01/2025 19:23

So sad. He was my favourite on Who’s Line is it Anyway
