Miracle migraine cures

FoxtonFoxton · 14/01/2025 09:00

I know there aren't really any "miracle" cures, but any advice and ideas. would be so appreciated.
I've suffered from migraines for years, since my early 30s. They are hormonal related I'm sure, and have got worse since perimenopause started. They make me really sick as well as head pain, and I'm so over this shit every single month multiple times without fail. It even makes me scared to go on holiday because the thought of getting one on a plane or in a strange place is awful.
I can't take sumatriptan as I have really a really bad reaction.
Has anyone found anything that has made life easier?

A tin of coke and an aspirin can help mine a bit or a really strong coffee.

Sorry, I know how debilitating they are, mine are hormonal too but sumatriptan works well for me so far.

GrazeConcern · 14/01/2025 09:46

Ibuprofen, a white coffee and an almond croissant really knock mine on the head.

squirrelnutcartel · 14/01/2025 09:59

I give ds a feverfew capsule each day and this prevents his migraines. If he stops taking them, the migraines return, so the feverfew seems to be working. You can take two capsules if necessary.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 14/01/2025 10:22

Have you considered a preventative? Doctor prescribed propranolol for mine, it's been a life changer

I've had a terrible migraine going on 3 days now, today being the 3rd. As I type this, my hands are frozen lol. BUT IT WORKED! I finally have relief! I made a bowl of ice water, plenty of ice. Dip my hands in it until I could not tolerate it any longer, then I repeated the hand exercise until my hands were warm. Then I just repeated this for 4-5minutes. I started feeling relief in the first 2-3min. I'm going to do it a little more... just to be sure it doesn't come back! I'm amazed!!! And so very grateful for this video! The migraine pain was up my neck, pain behind eyes, pain in temples - now completely gone! Seriously!

All great suggestions. Also look at everything you eat and drink. Mine were mainly hormone driven, menopause stopped a lot of them but I found certain foods triggered them and drinks — orange and grapefruit juice were two. Decaf everything to see if that helps.

CornishPorsche · 14/01/2025 10:36

There are 7 different triptans. If you don't get on with sumatriptan, ask the GP to take you through the others. There are also the new gepants.

The guidance for hormonal migraine is to take frovatriptan preventatively on set days in your cycle.

clarkkentsglasses · 14/01/2025 10:38

Ice pack on head
2x Solpadiene Max
2x Ibuprofen plus
1x Buccastem - anti sickness

I also take a triptan, appreciate you can't. The above should stop the fucker but I also have to go to bed.

It's the PITS!

Mum5net · 14/01/2025 10:47

25 years of monthly headaches (lasting up to eight days a month), all stopped completely in their tracks with the menopause.
Always get up at the same time of the day, no long lies at weekends.
Keep crackers in your handbag so you never actually skip a meal.
Try not to eat sugar until after 4pm UNLESS you are needing to drink that full fat can of Coca cola/ Fanta etc
It's awful. Sending strength.

destiel00 · 14/01/2025 10:50

Full sugar cola with 3 x 100mg dissolving aspirin
Only thing that worked for me

TheFairyCaravan · 14/01/2025 11:02

I get a lot of migraines. I take Triptans and preventatives. I, also, have Botox on the NHS every 3 months. I take Dolovent which was recommended to me but the National Migraine Centre. I notice if I stop taking that. What makes the biggest difference to me is acupuncture. I can’t live without it.

Absolutely this. I was told about the coke and asprin trick and didn't believe it until I tried it. 👍

Agree try a different triptan.

2 paracetamol, 3 aspirin and a can of cold Coke (full fat) at the first sign.

apparently feet in very hot water helps.

if you're having several a month talk to your GP about a preventative medication.

MidnightBloom · 14/01/2025 11:27

The last time I had a bad migraine and sickness, I looked through old mumsnet posts. I kept seeing cola, salt and vinegar crisps, chocolate and asprin being mentioned. I thought what have I got to lose. So I drank the cola and eat the crisps and chocolate and took the asprin. It actually worked and half an hour later the migraine was gone. I keep the above in my medicine box now.

Hope you get better soon op migraines are horrible.

Ilovemyshed · 14/01/2025 11:30

For me, an icepack or Koolhead strip
Soluble aspirin asap plus some ibuprofen a bit later
A sugary drink
Then eating a bowl of white rice with peas and sweetcorn, small cubes of cheddar cheese, butter and pepper.

chirpes · 14/01/2025 11:30

Brain supplements- dolovent uk are good. I take individual ones but follow their dosage guidelines. I do notice if I forget a dose. I also make sure I stay well hydrated and try not to have tension in my jaw and neck. Of course nothing really helps when it's due to hormones. 3 dissolvable aspirin are fantastic and a very, very hot hot water bottle pressed hard against my head help with an attack. They are the most miserable things to suffer. I have found taking the supplements has stopped my sickness I always used to get which is a definite improvement. I hope you find some relief.

Wintersoltice · 14/01/2025 11:31

Listen to the HeadsUp podcast from the National Migraine Centre. There is a lot of information on there. I haven't listened to all of them but I found the triptan episode for example was very helpful. Different triptans are effective for different people. Some work quickly but are then excreted quickly from the body while others are slower to work but stick around longer.

I take magnesium and vitamin B2 which have some clinical evidence behind them.

I take propanolol as a preventative which seems to work well. They start you on the lowest dose but if it doesn't work you can increase. Caffeine is thought to work as a treatment for some people.

If I were you I would throw everything at it, eg get on a preventative medication, vitamins and try a new triptan.

FoxtonFoxton · 14/01/2025 11:36

Thank you so much everyone for your advice-some really great stuff here to try. Solidarity with you fellow sufferers...its absolutely miserable isn't it. I was in bed Christmas Day with an absolute belter throwing up in a bucket and curled up in agony. So fed up of it.

Try a different triptan?
My miracle was frovatriptan.

Snowmanscarf · 14/01/2025 11:38

Friends have successfully been treated by osteopaths in the past.

Also, there’s the National Migraine centre which I believe you can self-refer to.

Ask for anti sickness tablets or patches as well.
