For those folks who know Newcastle, what would you do if you had two nights there with a female teenager (18) please?

Some nice cafes / independent shops / restaurants kind of thing.

Any recommendations for hotels near the train station?

Limited mobility - okay on flat but not hiking up stairs / landmarks please.

Many thanks!

The Holiday Inn Express is close to the station and next to the coach station. I’ve stayed there and would do so again.

Thank you, I'll have a look. Am looking for something nice for myself and my daughter. We have some vouchers due to expire lol

It's quite a drop down to the Quayside from the Central Station if you're walking, so be warned about that. The walk up to the University and city centre isn't so gruelling, and the sweep of Grey Street and its neo-classical buildings, the shops, restaurants, theatre, museums, activities, etc, is wonderful - and you can get the metro the short hop up to Monument and Haymarket.

Is your DD looking at one of the universities?

ChocoChocoLatte · 13/01/2025 17:23

@JanuaryCrow no, she's a student elsewhere. Am just grabbing a rare moment before she returns home to spend some time together. It's an easy train ride and a city neither of us have ever been.

@SlapTheMelon thank you - I'll go look those up.

Remember in Newcastle you are not allowed to wear coats when you go out. 🤣 I was born in Newcastle leaving in 1981 but my dad made me wear a coat all the time even when it was 5 degrees!!

Grainger Market for lunch Saturday (sometimes is closed Sunday), lots of little quirky food stalls.

The Botanist for a nice cocktail (close to Grainger so I'd do this around lunchtime).

If you have the stamina for Crazy Golf, out at Ouseburn (short taxi hop) is an adults only Crazy Golf, called Golf Fang. Nice for an hour or two lots of interesting holes, very very well themed inside, if she likes to take fun pictures for Instagram it would suit very well.

If the weather is dreadful or you just fancy a sit down, there's an Everyman Cinema, which is really fun, it's all sofas and more chill out than a normal cinema, can order food and drinks to your seat.

The only real hill is the main Grey Street/Dean Street from the main city down to the Quayside, so maybe just walk down and taxi up.

ChocoChocoLatte · 13/01/2025 17:29

@Musicaltheatremum your dad and my mum seem to have been but from the same cloth lol

Are the vouchers hotel ones?

ChocoChocoLatte · 13/01/2025 17:30

@JimHalpertsWife yes, generic hotel vouchers so we have choices

In that case I'd also recommend Sunday Market on the Quayside. Lots of stalls, some full of tat, some not, all the food carts at one end. If you can, get chatting to the fella on the other end who sells hand made leather goods - he is very entertaining and the little signs he puts on each of his goods are hilarious to stop and read.

Sunday market at tynemouth metro station - you'd need to get the metro out there but it's lovely.

Newcastle is on a steep hill, getting down to (and back up) the Quayside is quite a hike.
If you stay at the top end (where the train station is), there is Eldon Square, the main shopping centre, Grainer Market, lots of fancy bars near St James's Park (football ground), China Town (Stowell Street)

Last time I was there on a Friday night as few clothes as possible seemed the norm for a lot of women. No one but me seemed to wear a coat.

JimHalpertsWife · 13/01/2025 20:38

If you and dd are into books, the Waterstones at Greys Monumnent is so beautiful- outside and in. Worth a pop in.

ElleDeeCB · 13/01/2025 20:49

Melia Innside is a good new hotel, bit trendy but also has facilities of a large business travel type hotel. Kiln restaurant on Ouseburn has great food and quirky. See if there is anything on to see at Baltic and/or the Glasshouse - or just go for coffee and the views/architecture. Love Newcastle, great city. It is quite hilly, so you may need to use taxis for some of this.

Evenmoretired44 · 13/01/2025 20:55

Crown plaza is nice and very near the station. The theatre is in the centre of town and has really good touring shows so do look and see what’s on. Haven’t been there in yonks but have good memories of the restaurant 21.

REDB99 · 13/01/2025 21:06

The Quayside is a steep walk back into the centre so if you need flat avoid this or get a taxi back up. Loads of good independent restaurants, don’t go to a chain. Good suggestion to join the Newcastle Foodies group on FB. A metro ride out to Tynemouth for the market on Saturday or Sunday is a good shout. Or a metro ride to Whitley Bay, Park View has lovely independent shops and cafes.

Blackfriars was an excellent restaurant when we lived in Newcastle in the early '00s. I hear, from friends still in the area, it's still as good today. And it's the oldest dining room in the UK, apparently!
