I want to have a gift delivered that's not flowers

I want to send a friend of mine a gift as she's having quite a hard time just now and I live too far away to "pop in", I don't want to send flowers, and for health reasons I'm trying to avoid chocolates/afternoon tea in a box type things. I'm stumped for other ideas though. Any suggestions please?

A book? Could be of photos of nature or poems or a short story collection
always so many choices with a book ( even a lovely notebook!)

This site is called dontbuyherflowers and has various gift boxes for women

www.dontbuyherflowers.com/product-category/by-recipient/gift-boxes-for-women/

there are also ones where you can curate what's in the box and there are loads on etsy

M&S do lots of different types of hampers - from food/drinks to bath/pamper sets - am sure lots of companies do them too so worth looking about

A book or magazine subscription

Voucher for a day out that is close by to where she lives

I've had boxes of cheese delivered as presents. The come with ice packs around the cheese and have been very nice.

KazzaV · 12/01/2025 20:53

M&S definitely - the afternoon tea letterbox gift is a good one

Pancakeflipper · 12/01/2025 20:54

Have you a lovely independent bookshop who'd send out a book nicely wrapped up with a card?

HaagenYAAS · 12/01/2025 20:55

Oh yes a very special book is super! One with lots of lovely photographs in? Or with special words like the James Norbury ones? What ever might lift the sports, or what you think they are into.

mitogoshigg · 12/01/2025 20:56

Anything but hand cream, does anyone actually use it, so often cited here as a gift but based on the hundred or so unopened ones I get donated each year for the fair, nobody here does!

You can send fruit hampers, a book, a cd if she still has a player but I'd personally prefer cheese and crackers myself

Someone sent me some samosas when I was going through a hard time. I really liked that it was different from flowers, chocolates etc that others sent. From this place bigmumsamosas.com/

If you go to the Not on the High Street website and search for ‘letterbox gifts’ there are dozens of all sorts of things by all sorts of makers which go in a box that fits through the letterbox, so you don’t even need to tell the recipient to expect a parcel! I’ve used lots of them and they have all been well received.

TISSHA · 12/01/2025 21:06

gloves! really nice pair of gloves or mittens in a nice colour. TurtleDoves?

Tailfeather · 12/01/2025 21:15

You can build your own care package here: www.notanotherbunchofflowers.com. They do nice boxes with different designs and you choose what gifts go in the boxes.

NeonK · 12/01/2025 21:16

Treatbox do letterbox gift boxes - premade or build your own (includes pampering stuff, edibles, drinkables, trinkets etc)

lurkingfromhome · 12/01/2025 21:21

Does she have a garden or even a patio? What about a (small) tree? I’ve used The Present Tree before and they are superb. Or a rose bush or similar?

CoastalCalm · 12/01/2025 21:25

I’ve started to send plants from M&S rather than flowers and all are very well received

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 12/01/2025 21:31

I got an M&S gift in similar circumstances and it was very much appreciated. Not flowers. More mini luxury beauty.

jenevivech · 12/01/2025 21:32

There are Cornish afternoon teas you can send if she's into that sorta thing

Workingmammabear · 12/01/2025 21:34

I usually send my friends treats e.g. fancyjacks from small local suppliers, but if you're avoiding food some unexpected gifts I've sent / received in the past include: a jigsaw puzzle, a book, audiobook tokens, candles, some aveda blue oil (great for stress), a pair of pajamas (the gifted sisters do particularly lovely ones), a Honeywell bakes box, a 6 minute journal, cosy socks and eye mask, a scarf, box of well being tea, a framed personalised picture, dried letterbox flowers.

This website has lots of different options, it's a small business local to me 😊
