Taking toddlers outside in winter time

lightand · 12/01/2025 14:46

Speaking for someone I know.

Mum takes her little one out to the park 3 times a day during the summer.
Little one gets bored in the house all the time[and so does mum].

But she is more stumped about what to do winter time.
Little one gets too cold being in the park 3 times a day.

Soft play is only for 1 hour at a time.

What else could they both be doing please? Thanks,

Activities at home eg baking , painting , dough, imaginary play etc

Thewaitingseason · 12/01/2025 14:49

Do they have a garden ?

frijolito · 12/01/2025 14:50

Cafe, child friendly museum, aquarium, national trust place, children’s cinema screening, swimming, library?
Do they have a garden instead of the park so can quickly warm up and go back out?

I get it we live in North East Scotland its the warmest it's been all week today at 1 degree!

We wrap them up and go for walks still woods are good as tends to be a bit more sheltered. We take a flask of hot chocolate with us. We tend to do something in the morning which is tiring and then chill in the afternoon with a jigsaw, crafts or a film. So walk, swimming pool, playpark as long as not icy, some trampoline centres have toddler sessions, national trust places, some museums and art galleries are free.

Nextyearhopes · 12/01/2025 14:53

Perhaps buy a warmer coat for the kid!

ReachingOut8 · 12/01/2025 14:55

The park 3 times a day sounds like a nightmare even in the summer 🤣😂

Sirzy · 12/01/2025 14:55

Don’t forget it’s fine for a child to be bored sometimes! We don’t need to constantly be entertaining them.

rotate toys around so they always have different things available

Frostine · 12/01/2025 14:57

Dress her up . Long sleeve vest , long sleeve top & jumper. Pair of wooly tights , trousers , long socks . Coat and hat , gloves. Good waterproof shoes or boots (wellies can be chilly )
Go out to the park or usual outdoor activities , take extra gloves if get wet during play.

Toddler groups
Library
Museum
Bus ride
Train ride
Swimming
Shopping centre

It sounds like the mum gets bored and doesn't know how to cope.

samlovesdilys · 12/01/2025 15:06

We used to set up an obstacle course inside the house!! When it was really grotty outside...but splash suits, wellies and warm layers, my boys would always be keen to go it given 1/2 a chance!

BBQPete · 12/01/2025 15:07

Toddler / Play groups
Sessions at the library
Wear the right clothes to go out in the park (though why anyone would go to the same place 3x a day, at any time of year, is beyond me)
Swimming
Mine used to like going on a bus, or going on a train - they felt that was a trip in itself
Getting on with jobs that need to be done - like going to the supermarket / Post Office / Bank / Dentist / Optician / other shops
Doing more in the house
Visiting other people

MumChp · 12/01/2025 15:09

Warm clothes and go to the park?

MollyButton · 12/01/2025 15:09

The child needs better clothes. 3 short outdoor times in winter sounds perfectly do able. She just need the right coat and gloves etc. lots of toddlers are doing this. I trip either end of the day to get siblings, and a playtime/doing jobs of their own.

But 3 long outdoor trips at any time of year doesn't sound possible with all the other things that need to be done.

WeeOrcadian · 12/01/2025 15:20

Warmer clothes for the park
Go for a walk / nature walk, see what bugs / leaves / birds you can see
Puddle jumping wearing said warmer clothes

Do they have a garden ?

Yes, but small.

At least, mum doesnt think it large.
I dont think it is bad size myself.

Not sure all those places are that nearby.
But I can mention them. Thanks.

Who the hell goes to the park three times a day or they’re bored!? That’s weird in itself

I think mum[or dad comes to that] need to widen their ideas.

Which is why I started the thread in the first place.
I do think there are more places they could be going than a park. Though they do vary which parks I think.

I do think mum gets bored.
But I think toddler isnt the easiest child to entertain either.
I think toddler is an outdoor and very sociable child, at heart.

Can you still get fleece lined all in one puddlesuits? Mine used to wear all winter over warm clothing. Never jeans.

Nerdlings · 12/01/2025 15:27

There is no reason you can’t take her to the park in the winter. Buy long sleeve thermal vests and leggings that she can wear under her clothing and a better coat. You can get them cheaply on eBay and Vinted. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

lightand · 12/01/2025 15:27

I will check on what sort of clothes child is being put in.
I think they are ok.
Mum did say child's hands get too cold.
I will suggest better gloves. Or wear two sets?

OP posts:
Schoolchoicesucks · 12/01/2025 15:27

Wellies, waterproof overtrousers and good waterproof coat, over a fleece. Good hat and gloves. Buying 2nd hand is worthwhile.

My kids used to be the only ones in the playpark in winter - would go stir crazy indoors all day and soft play is not something I could handle (the noise! The germs!) every day.

Frosty woodland walks. Stomping in muddy puddles. Enjoying having the pick of playground equipment.

Agree

Are there playgroups available locally, or mother and toddler groups?]
