What's the sweetest thing someone has done for you recently?

I'll go first.

Currently on mat leave with DC2. I ran out of my usual perfume recently, I only tend to wear this particular one. I decided I wasn't going to replace it, as it's a bit of an extravagant purchase whilst money is tight.
I didn't say anything to DH and was just wearing one I'd been gifted. DH randomly brought me my usual one. I told him he shouldn't have, we're meant to be cutting back. He said I didn't smell like 'me'.

What are yours?

Name changed as this is outing.

My partner and I don’t live together. He somehow connived with my kids to smuggle a Christmas stocking into the house and the kids then hid it and put it out with theirs before I got up on Christmas morning.

It was a genuinely amazing surprise and for a moment, in bleary eyed sleepiness, I actually thought Santa had really delivered.

Two things:

Getting into bed, exhausted after a busy night shift, to find my beloved husband had put a furry covered hot water bottle in the bed, ready for me.

My line manager telling me she wished she could clone me because I'm so good at what I do. That comment made me feel happy after a gruelling time at work.

My son is 13 and always checks up on me, asks if I've had a good day, or if I'm feeling okay etc. I will answer that yep, had a good day or I'm feeling good and he always reply "nice". It's hard to explain but the way he says it, is just so sweet and like he genuinely thinks it's nice that I'm good.

He also texted me "I love you" the other day out the blue.

Having two teen girls as well who aren't as expressive like this, it's just lovely that my son still is.

But he has a great role model. My husband is such a thoughtful man. Gets me drinks and food, scrapes my car of ice, has said he loves me every single day for the last 20 years of our relationship etc. Love him!

A couple of months ago now. DM was in hospital, dementia so very confused and disorientated. The other patients were amazing with her, no judgement and really reassured her when she was calling for me. Anyway I had to go with my DS to another hospital to see a consultant (we'd been waiting ages, it was a 5 hour round trip and I had to be there with him) which meant I'd miss visiting and DM wouldn't have anyone, nor would she understand why.

I was telling one of the ladies on her ward how awful I felt about it , just in general chit chat and despite her being discharged the following day she offered to come back to sit with DM on the day I couldn't be there. It's hands down the most wonderful, thoughtful thing anyone has ever done for me. I'll never ever forget her.

My DH has done heaps for me this week. He's sat up with me in the wee small hours when my anxiety runs wild, he's driven me to my work as I hate the snow, bought me a fish supper just to cheer me up and has just told me to sit down while he washes up. He's a keeper all right

TheCatCameBack112 · 12/01/2025 15:55

I've been smashing through an assignment today (should have started earlier!). Dh has brought me coffee and breakfast to my study, made me a lovely salad for lunch, and when I have just submitted he has run me a bath to soothe my stiff neck. I believe I also heard the hoover and the washing machine running this afternoon. Proper legend

TroysMammy · 12/01/2025 15:57

My neighbour thinking about me and messaging me in work to advise that our awful neighbour had been arrested. She even sent me the video from her cctv.

TroysMammy · 12/01/2025 15:58

It made my day.

Lovely.

People often don't realise how much their small gestures mean. Like the friend who picked up my child AND dropped them back when I was overloaded. Will never forget that small act of kindness.

27th Dec, our elderly neighbours invited us around for a drink. We've lived here 3yrs, but been renovating and never been to their house. DH's mother had a fall, so we were at the hospital instead. I told the neighbours we couldn't come.

A few days later, she came around with a bottle of champagne and said 'This is what we would have been drinking if you'd been able to come over'. So unexpected.

Far from recent, but this has reminded me of my A-Level results day, many moons ago. One of our very new (2 weeks, maybe) neighbours called me over the back fence and asked me to get my mum out. I did so, then lingered in the door to hear what it was about. Luckily I did, as they proceeded to pop a bottle of Harris’s champagne that they’d bought for the upcoming Millenium and celebrate my success. Have never drunk champers sitting on a a rabbit hutch before or since!

Haha, that is cute! How did he persuade them to keep the secret? 😁

Mine was somebody I mentor in their job finding & buying me a copy of a book I'd talked about with them. 🙂

Dh tells me I have too many house plants, but when I am down , he will often surprise me with a new one.

Letmeknowhowthatgoes · 12/01/2025 17:49

We had our GCs for a few days post Christmas while their Mum went to visit some friends. It's been a tough year for them as their parents have split up. GS was (understandably) tearful at bedtime and missing his Mum and Dad. Trying to lighten the mood I said "well Mummy will be back tomorrow and you'll see Daddy in 2 days so you don't have to be stuck with boring old Nana and Grandpa much longer". he gave me the biggest hug ever saying "Don't be silly Nana, you and Grandpa aren't boring, we've had the best time ever".

I had surgery recently. My friend came to my house unannounced with some flowers and a multipack of Wispa bars.

You didn't share did you?

wizzywig · 12/01/2025 17:53

This thread needs to be constantly updated. It's warmed my cockles! And I love the elephant with trainers

madamegaskell · 12/01/2025 17:58

@wizzywig of course!

obsessedwithfreshbread · 12/01/2025 17:59

What a lovely thread ❤️

Yesterday my husband had nipped out to get something from town and came back with a bottle of Prosecco "from the dog" for being the best dog mum, I admit I welled up a little as it was such a surprise

Pallisers · 12/01/2025 18:01

My son told me that I was the most likeable person he knew and his friends thought the same. He isn't a big one for compliments (although great at saying thanks and I love you) so it was lovely.

NeedSomeComfy · 12/01/2025 18:11

I recently had to give a series of classes in my subject at work. It was in my second language, which I can speak fine but I find writing hard. My husband (whose native language it is) patiently checks through every single class I prepare, every email I send the students and every written piece of feedback I give them to make sure there are no mistakes. To top it off this week they've handed in some handwritten exams and some of the writing is horrendous, but my husband seems to miraculously be able to decipher the random squiggles so he's also sat with me looking through the exams! It's hours and hours of extra work for him but he does it all willingly.
I wish I could reciprocate by helping him with his English (my first language, his second) but I think his English is better than mine! 😆

Laloca2000 · 12/01/2025 18:11

My 2 adult sons recently told me I was a badass and the coolest person they knew. Being that I think I'm the world's most boring person, that was kinda unexpected but was quite touched all the same!

ShiftySquirrel · 12/01/2025 18:17

I've been feeling dreadful all weekend, shivery, temperature, cough etc. DD2 (13) brought me a hot water bottle, unasked. It was just what I needed and so thoughtful and lovely.

Tracystubbs · 12/01/2025 18:22

Growing up,my parents refused to buy us Easter eggs

My father was a tight arse who hated parting with money and my mother is a narc and got it in her head that we didn't want any/my birthday is Easter so I didn't 'need' an egg

I grew up,had my own kids (I bought them Easter eggs!) and one day I was saying that I'd never had one (nor went trick or treating as my father thought it was begging and my mother couldn't be bothered)

Dd was horrified, she had a Saturday job at this point and earned £6 a 'shift' (I'm going back a few years and she was about 12/13-cash in hand from a neighbour)

She disappeared off to 'work' one Saturday and came back clutching a large egg

She'd earned her wages and headed off into town to buy me my first ever easter egg

I cried my eyes out that day

When mine where younger,I always said that if the kids wanted to buy me a mothers day present, they where to wait until the Monday when everything was half price

Ds had headed off to sainsburys and I got a text

'Mum!I've bought you something!'

He burst in,clutching a box of my fave chocs and a really proud look on his face

Shame temptation had got a bit too strong on the walk home

The box was empty!

My boss and l were on a Zoom to someone the other day and she had to introduce me but instead of telling him my job title, she said "she's everything to this place and we don't know what we would do without her" - l felt so appreciated

NellietheNumpty · 12/01/2025 18:27

We have had a tough week. Sleep has been in short supply, I had a very restless night and woke up because I was cold. I had been tossing around so much my covers were tangled and I couldn’t get them straight. I was cold and stressed.
DH got out of bed and told me a funny story about why the covers were tangled. He straighten out the covers and tucked me it. I felt like a pampered child.
I slept well and am back on my game now.

OnyourbarksGSG · 12/01/2025 18:34

I’ve started having regular sleep overs with my eldest grandson, ready for us taking him away for a week in June. It’s been lovely. He sleeps in my bed and we tell stories at bedtime and despite him not being a “cuddly” type of 3 1/2 yo, I’ve found he’s snuggling into me at night and reaching for my hand more. He’s got a great sense of humour and is a master marble run builder. I was told this morning that I’m his #1 bestie now and his grandad is a smelly welly. I’ll take that promotion thanks kiddo ♥️ (sorry DH !)
