Eggs in the fridge marked Best Before 7th Jan - would you use them?

OP posts:
MrsSkylerWhite · 11/01/2025 16:31

Yes

Tittyfilarious · 11/01/2025 16:31

Yes but check them first , put them in a jug of water if they sink they are fine , if they float they are off

DelilahBucket · 11/01/2025 16:32

Can't say I've ever paid a bit of attention to dates on eggs. If you're not sure, you can do the float test. If they half float, you can use as long as they are cooked through, if they completely float, then they are off.

I'd definitely use them yes, it's only a couple of days! But if you want to double check them, place them in a cup of water. If they sink, they're good, if they float, they've gone off

NoWordForFluffy · 11/01/2025 16:33

Yes. Though my eggs wouldn't be in the fridge. We eat 'out of date' eggs all the time!

purpleme12 · 11/01/2025 16:33

Yes!! I use eggs a lot more past expiry date than that!

Nourishinghandcream · 11/01/2025 16:33

Yes.
Would check them first but they will almost certainly be fine.

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 11/01/2025 16:37

Yeah I probably would but I wouldn't eat them raw e.g. licking the bowl if you're making a cake.

FutureFry · 11/01/2025 16:39

Definitely. I don't check my eggs sell by date and I've no doubt had many past their date

EltonJohnsLabrador · 11/01/2025 16:41

Crack them on a plate and smell them.

And Im surprised no coont has said dont keep them in the frigo yet.

DreamW3aver · 11/01/2025 16:41

Of course but then I'd never look at the . date on an egg in the first place

assuming you have a sense of smell you won't use a bad egg

Why are you keeping them in the fridge?

Soundofthesea · 11/01/2025 16:45

We are currently eating the 30th December and they are fine

eurochick · 11/01/2025 16:57

I would have no issue. I probably would not even bother with the float test at the point but that is what I do with eggs if I'm unsure if they are ok.

SnakesAndArrows · 11/01/2025 17:04

Definitely. You don’t need to keep eggs in the fridge (in the UK, anyway).

If you want to be cautious, just crack them into a cup individually to check if they smell OK.

You can also test them before using them by seeing if they float in water. If they do, they are probably bad.

RabbitsRock · 11/01/2025 17:04

There’s a specific egg rack in my fridge

Mine come from my garden laid by doris Joan and Peggy my chickens, so I literally have no idea when their sell by date is. I use my eyes and nose. One indicator of freshness is the staler the egg the more liquid the white will be and the yolk less plump. Fresh eggs are awful if you try and boil and peel them.

This. I'd still be doing this with them in Feb

Classee · 11/01/2025 17:22

Eggs are fine for weeks past their best before date. Just do the sink or float test.

Arlanymor · 11/01/2025 17:23

Float test. They don't come out of the chicken with a Use By date after all!

ploppiness · 11/01/2025 17:23

Mine come from the chickens in the garden so no dates. Never kept them in the fridge. Presumably the egg rack rack is in the fridge main part as they should never be kept in the door.

I eat them a month after without doing any test and they've always been fine

HoneyButterPopcorn · 11/01/2025 17:35

Yes float them (they float because the little air sack expands when they go iffy so it they stand up in the water they are on the turn) - and if in doubt crack them individually onto a saucer - if dodgy the yolk will look puckered.

At last, my home economics classes have come in useful!

RabbitsRock · 11/01/2025 17:43

Ploppiness the rack is in the door.

This week I ate a dozen with a bbe of 6th December. They’ve been in the fridge. They were fine.

Float test. Smell test.

I have a wine rack in my fridge. It currently contains two bottles of kefir and a bag of carrots. 😄

It isn't necessary to keep eggs laid in the UK (or, indeed, most of Europe) in the fridge. It's an American thing (the origins of which I'm not entirely sure of).

And yeah, best before dates on eggs are essentially meaningless.
