How do you store plastic food storage boxes??

Sorry this is so mundane. We moved just before Christmas and haven't unpacked these yet - because there's nowhere to put them. Our kitchen is smaller than the previous house with fewer cupboards, and they are all full. We could find space for some sort of rack arrangement under or just by a table, and there is a big garage. I do remember how messy the boxes were when I stored them in a cupboard at my previous house though. Thanks for any wisdom.

I have 3 sets of nested ones. 2 round and 1 oblong.

itsstillmehere · 11/01/2025 12:51

Like tiredcatlady I threw them all out and have replaced with glass ones. They stack beautifully and don't discolour.

Printedword · 11/01/2025 12:56

So, I had a cull of ones I never use recently. The rest are in 3 categories - large and rarely used but useful are in a storage cube in the understairs cupboard/pantry to our kitchen; regularly used are in a cupboard in the kitchen taking up about a third of one shelf space and on grandstand storage platforms I got from Lakeland; the 3 I use for non food items related to taking laundry and dishwasher products on holiday are in the under sink area with related products. I made more space in the laundry/dishwasher etc. storage area by buying a pail/bucket like storage tub that looks like a washing machine.

I used to just have a jumble that spilled over everywhere.
Now I put lids on each pot and stack inside a next size up pot. Gives me about 2-5 sets not in use depending on time of year/state of freezer.

Unpaidviewer · 11/01/2025 12:57

I replaced them all with stainless steel or glass ones from ikea. They have wooden lids. I went a bit nuts on my infertility journey and convinced myself that plastic and my bad diet had caused my PCOS and we were going to get cancer.

Now everything matches and they stack nicely.

BigDahliaFan · 11/01/2025 13:06

We binned half of them and just the ones that fit together with lids. Now stacked in a drawer.

nomorezoflora · 11/01/2025 13:15

Buy nestable ones. Then keep a few of your big/small ones - only ones you actually use! - to take up any odd needs. Get rid of the rest.

Thanks for all the suggestions. No free drawers, let alone deep drawers. It's an old but robust kitchen.

Mine are shoved in a small cupboard under the stairs, in my mind I am going to use them all and have a wonderfully organised pantry cupboard but it hasn't happened yet.

My DH carefully washes and saves used 500g margarine tubs. I have to say they do stack beautifully, next to the food processor on the worktop, and I use them for storing left overs in the freezer. Meanwhile I have a cupboard full of rarely used tupperware occupying a nice glass fronted upper cupboard. When the cupboard is opened they shoot out like those tennis ball machines - which does put me off opening the door...

Paradisegained · 11/01/2025 13:32

I got fed up so brought a nest of square one with lids on. They all go inside each other unless being used.

Stacked in a cupboard. All the lids in a cereal container

I was hoping for a brilliant , easy, cheap solution, but…..I have two 30x30 storage baskets ( 2 ! ) in a base cupboard. Long term items like jam sugar and candles live behind them. Every so often I have a clearout but then seem to end up buying more.

I do now put fruit, veg etc into some of them as I am unpacking so at least they are being kept in the fridge ( overflow). The problem is that they are so useful for freezers, Biscuits, pasta etc that they are an essential. I once inadvertently left some crackers in a sealed box for seven months ( holiday house), I remembered them as we pulled into the drive and thought ‘oh dear, I expect even the birds will reject them’ They seemed absolutely perfect, crisp and smelt fine. The birds were delighted.

Ohhhh I'm interested in the glass boxes. I may start to replace my plastic ones. Thanks for all the contributions - you have made me laugh! I think I'm going to have to resort to a big storage box under a table or in the garage.

These are similar to mine, eBay do loads too

I have a big box in a cupboard, spent ages one day matching lids to boxes and using a permanent marker to number each tub and its lid then stacked them together as much as possible and put lids in a plastic bag on top. Any rogue tubs or lids were ruthlessly disposed of. We all make an effort now to try putting them away neatly not shoving in as we used to.

Think this sums up previous life with tupperware

I have a fabric drawer combo from ikea that sits in the cupboard. The one that suits the kallax units.
I have kids in one, lots in the others and it’s really effective. Surprisingly deep- I can get kids and pots in one drawer if I need to.

Keeping your kids in a drawer 😂 ? Reminds me of an old tv programme called The Brittas Empire, where one of the staff kept their baby in a drawer at the leisure centre. (Showing my age now as that was on years ago).

Loved that show! Carol and the twins.

This is what I have but the design has changed and can't have cost that much or I wouldn't have bought them. They literally give me another layer of shelving and I have standard leftover and mini boxes stacked on them. I did a cull before this. Occasionally, if too many are not in use in the freezer I have to shove a few in with the large items in the understairs cupboard/pantry

DilemmaDelilah · 11/01/2025 16:03

I have a big drawer specifically for plastic storage containers. 'Officially' (as in the right way, the way I have planned it) the containers get stacked inside each other so they take less room, with the lids organised by size.

In actuality DH just chucks them in anyhow so they take up loads of room, they fall down the back of the drawer, he can never find the right lid, it makes him really cross and he gets grumpy (especially when/if I point out that if they were put in there properly he would have no problem finding the right container and lid....)

Normallynumb · 11/01/2025 16:37

In a deep drawer. I might be weird but I'm a bit obsessed with plastic food containers!
My DS and GG have recently moved in together so I sent them 5 lock and lock boxes which nest
