What are your regular beauty/personal grooming buys?

Standing in the shower this morning and reaching for the shampoo I started to think about how so many of the things I buy are regular purchases that I rarely or never switch up on, and I hate running out of. I've reached that age where I know what I like and I stick to it.

For me it's:

Dove soap bars and the stick deodorants. I'm not a fan of shower gel.
Sensodyne toothpaste, the one with the green cap is my favourite because it tastes like Tic Tacs.

Plantur 39 caffeine shampoo which (unless I am imagining it) has really slowed down my menopausal hair loss. Also the No More Yellow shampoo which is cheap, comes in enormous bottles and works brilliantly as a purple toner for blonde or naturally grey/white hair. I shampoo first with the Plantur 39, then again with the NMY, but I use any old conditioner.

Elemis cleansing balm in a tub. The yellow one, original scent. Expensive but lasts me ages and smells so lovely. I alternate it with the Boot No 7 gel cleanser in a tube which is cheap but brillant.

The Ordinary serums and skincare. I use a few of them but I am never without the Multi Peptide Serum which used to be called Buffet.

Johnsons Baby Powder.

My mascara is always either Benefits Roller Lash (I've had about 4) or Max Factor Volume Million which I've been using for donkey's years.

My foundation has been Boots No 7 (various types) for absolutely donkeys years, because their Cool Ivory colour suits my natural skin tone better than any other colour I've found. Despite trying lots of expensive brands over the years I always end up back here, so I don't bother looking at others now.

Mac Mehr lipstick. It's my desert island disc of lipsticks. I've been wearing it for many years and I dread them discontinuing it. I do wear several others, but when it doubt it's always Mehr. It goes with everything and really suits me.

I rarely wear perfume but my signature scent is Bottega Veneta for women. I'm on my fourth bottle and although I own a few others I don't wear them anywhere near as often. The one possible exception is Bois d'Iris by Van Cleef and Arpels. I'm still on my first bottle and I've had it three years but would definitely replace when it's gone.

Ultradex mouthwash. It's very effective and doesn't leave your mouth feeling like your gargled with paint stripper.

Very tempted to try the Aldi balm cleanser, I switch between the Elemis/Clinique/Body Shop ones at the moment, think the body shop is actually my favourite of them

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/01/2025 17:56

I bought the No 7 balm cleanser at the weekend. Initial impressions are good.

Bobbi Brown Sandwash Pink is my MLBB lipstick. One of their excellent MUA refused to sell me any of the other pinks and she was right. I’ve worn it over a decade now with the Powder Pink cream blush and it photographs beautifully.

MAC So Chaud over MAC Chicory pencil is my red.

MAC Orb eyeshadow is the perfect foundation for my eye area before putting other colours on top. I would be devastated if they discontinued it.

Max Factor Masterpiece mascara is better than all the Lancômes and other high end brands I’ve tried. Lengthening but doesn’t add “fake lash” volume. I’ve tried the whole Masteriece range but the original gold tube is the best.

Dermalogica cleansers and the Daily Microfoliant have been my go to since university, as has Palmer’s Cocoa Butter. Coming up for 30 years.

Dr Dennis Gross Vitamin C serum and moisturiser are my “new” regulars - only been using them a little over two years but can’t see myself changing any time soon.

Mitchum spray deodorant in Powder Fresh. Oway hair products. That green minty shower gel - used it for nearly 30 years and no idea what it’s called! Chanel perfume - they just seem to work with my skin.

Dr Hauschka and Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour hand creams.

Marvis toothpaste - it’s not too spicy.

I’ve exclusively used La Roche Posey sunscreens going on 15 years. They’re recommended by oncologists to their skin cancer patients - nuff said.

I’m at that age now where the years of trial and error and expensive mistakes are paying off. However it can still be fun when products are discontinued and you’re forced to update. I discovered Hourglass cosmetics after CT discontinued my foundation and I now have a make up bag full of the stuff!

I only ever wear Bobbi Brown Sandwash Pink too, tried others but always go back to Bobbi Brown Sandwash Pink in the end

Skincare - Avène Cicalfate moisturiser, Ren Evercalm day cream + face wash, Kate Somerville Exfolikate, BioDerma micellar water, Lansinoh nipple balm for lips

Hair - Elvive Dream Lengths shampoo + hair mask, Olaplex hair oil, Aveda Shampowder dry shampoo (life changing!!)

Body - Rituals shower gel (typically in the Karma scent), Dove cream soap bar, Dove Advanced Care deodorant (another life changer!), Aveeno body moisturiser, Nivea Q10 gradual tanning lotion in the summer, Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia perfume, Rituals Karma perfume

Makeup - Ilia mascara (all natural + has the most amazing wand), L’Oreal True Match foundation (have tried expensive brands and go back to this every time, it’s simply the best), Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser, Rimmel natural bronzer, Too Faced Chocolate Bar eyeshadow palette, Dior blush, Milk Future Fluid concealer, Dior Lip Glow oil in Cherry, Glossier Balm Dot Com in strawberry, Clinique Black Honey almost lipstick

The trouble with Aldi products - which I agree can be fab - is they are only available for a short time so by the time you’ve tried and liked something it’s often gone with no guarantee it’ll come back.

My favourites:

Urban Decay eyeliner - so soft and smudgy, I like Stash which is a greeny gold

Inkey List plumping lip gloss - actually works

Percy and Reed hair products especially Wonderbalm

Tweezerman tweezers

Simplehuman lighted mirror - I haven’t bought more than one of these as it was £££ but I’d 100% replace it if it broke, completed transformed getting ready on dark winter mornings

Jo Malone Wood Sage and Seasalt

Sanctuary Body Scrub

Essie Ballet Shoes nail varnish - in fact I like all of their range

Benefit Hoola Light and Dandelion

Flexitol Heel Balm

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream and Colour Corrector

Erborian CC Cream

I’m still on the hunt for a brow product that stays in place and looks natural and a mascara that lengthens without looking like spider legs.

Wunderbrow and Lancôme Hypnose Mascara

VWT5 · 14/01/2025 00:02

La Roche Posay SPF 50 for face - always. (Brown spots have actually faded)
Clarins Tonic body oil for legs
Clarins Blue Orchid facial oil - overnight after gym/sauna
MUA brow pencil - effective, cheap
ELF - impressed with many of their products - blushers especially. Could go more high end, but actually prefer this brand.

Barry M glitter nail polish -
don’t shout at me, but I just keep painting over it.
Some hasn’t budged since a punishing activity trip last June on my toenails, it’s that hard wearing - so I just paint over it and wait for it to grow out.
Looks surprisingly good in photos too.

DontNeedAnyMoreClothes · 14/01/2025 00:33

Tropic Mineral foundation

Child's Farm 3 in 1 hair and body (started buying it for the DC but I love it, really nice on my hair)

Salt of the Earth deodorant

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/01/2025 07:05

Another vote for Black Honey

Jayinthetub · 14/01/2025 07:15

Clarins Eau Extraordinaire - still not sure what a "treatment" fragrance is but makes me feel calm and happy when I catch a sniff. Shame it's not a bit more long lasting...

Murad multi vitamin oil and intense moisturiser. Game changer for peri dry face.

My biggest beauty recommend is glycerine soap bars from the Yorkshire Soap Company. They're not cheap but amazing on my skin, smell gorgeous down to the last sliver and don't seem to create shower scum. I but them 20 at a time and the whole family are now converts. No more shower gel here!

LBB2020 · 14/01/2025 08:57

I always have a pot of the blue Nivea cream on the go and a backup as I can’t be without it.
Sanex or Mitchum roll on deodorant.
No.7 stay perfect mascara, I try others but always go back to this one.
Aveeno oat serum and night cream have transformed my dry patchy sensitive skin, I love them and they are often on offer!

Shoxfordian · 14/01/2025 09:10

I switch between moisturisers, I like the lancome hydra zen one, but I have a kielhs one at the moment, and a face oil.

I use carmex before bed

I like a chanel lipstick, also use dior and I like the fenty lip glosses.

@TwigletsAndRadishes The Aldi cleansing balm is a dupe of the Elemis ones. I've used both and the Aldi is just as good. They only have them every few months though so you need to stock up when they do come in.

Thanks, I'll have a look for it.

OP, could you please link the No More Yellow shampoo? Keen to give it a go.

It's called Fanola No More Yellow. It comes in enormous bottles for about 14 quid. You can get it from Amazon. It's a very intense purple so unless you want it to work like a toner don't leave it on too long! It's quite alarming when it splashes all over your white bathroom, but it wipes of easily and doesn't leave a stain.

Elizabeth Arden Visible Difference Moisturiser. I have used it for nearly 25 years.

Max Factor Masterpiece Mascara Intense. Have tried most of the high end mascaras, but this is the best.

Erborian BB Cream in the Winter, then switch to Erborian CC Cream in Summer.

CheeseandMarmiteToastie · 14/01/2025 20:18

@Fluff111 thank you, I’ve tried Wunderbrow but I don’t get on with it - I’m not convinced I’m using it right though, do you have any tips?

Less is more. You don’t need much, make it look natural rather than painted on.
