What are your regular beauty/personal grooming buys?

Standing in the shower this morning and reaching for the shampoo I started to think about how so many of the things I buy are regular purchases that I rarely or never switch up on, and I hate running out of. I've reached that age where I know what I like and I stick to it.

For me it's:

Dove soap bars and the stick deodorants. I'm not a fan of shower gel.
Sensodyne toothpaste, the one with the green cap is my favourite because it tastes like Tic Tacs.

Plantur 39 caffeine shampoo which (unless I am imagining it) has really slowed down my menopausal hair loss. Also the No More Yellow shampoo which is cheap, comes in enormous bottles and works brilliantly as a purple toner for blonde or naturally grey/white hair. I shampoo first with the Plantur 39, then again with the NMY, but I use any old conditioner.

Elemis cleansing balm in a tub. The yellow one, original scent. Expensive but lasts me ages and smells so lovely. I alternate it with the Boot No 7 gel cleanser in a tube which is cheap but brillant.

The Ordinary serums and skincare. I use a few of them but I am never without the Multi Peptide Serum which used to be called Buffet.

Johnsons Baby Powder.

My mascara is always either Benefits Roller Lash (I've had about 4) or Max Factor Volume Million which I've been using for donkey's years.

My foundation has been Boots No 7 (various types) for absolutely donkeys years, because their Cool Ivory colour suits my natural skin tone better than any other colour I've found. Despite trying lots of expensive brands over the years I always end up back here, so I don't bother looking at others now.

Mac Mehr lipstick. It's my desert island disc of lipsticks. I've been wearing it for many years and I dread them discontinuing it. I do wear several others, but when it doubt it's always Mehr. It goes with everything and really suits me.

I rarely wear perfume but my signature scent is Bottega Veneta for women. I'm on my fourth bottle and although I own a few others I don't wear them anywhere near as often. The one possible exception is Bois d'Iris by Van Cleef and Arpels. I'm still on my first bottle and I've had it three years but would definitely replace when it's gone.

Ultradex mouthwash. It's very effective and doesn't leave your mouth feeling like your gargled with paint stripper.

I used to spend a fortune on skincare but now buy most from Aldi. I use their cleansing balm which is the best I've ever used. I use their caviar daily moisturiser and night cream and their La Mer dupe serum.

Make up I switched a few years ago from No 7 foundation and concealer to IT Cosmetics BB cream and Bye Bye Undereye.

I've recently discovered Aveeno shampoo and conditioner and my hair feels brilliant.

Not many actually, but there are a few that I'll buy over and over...

Clinique moisture surge but only in the summer... it's not rich enough for my dry skin in the winter
Mitchum deodorant, the ultimate one for super sweaters 😂
Elnett hairspray; everything else makes my hair crunchy and feel grim
Lee Stafford heat protection shine mist
Olaplex shampoo and conditioner when I'm feeling flush
Colgate toothpaste, just the regular one, not any of the fancy pants ones

More than I thought actually 😂

Shield soap - I seem to have reverted to my stinky teen self in perimenopause

M&S Ultimate Sleep cream - effective, smells lovely, often on offer

Aveda Be Curly curl cream - it's just the best.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 11/01/2025 22:31

Clingy type, is it?

Squeezetheday · 11/01/2025 19:52

My regulars are:

La Roche posay effaclar cleanser
MAC studio fix foundation
maxfactor masterpiece mascara
fussy deodorant
kerastase blonde absolu shampoo and conditioner
mugler alien perfume

I recently started trying Elemis moisturisers after reading about them on here and I love them but man they are £££. I got a lookfantastic advent calendar last year and already have a few favourites emerging I can see me buying again!

I went through a phase of splurging on lots of Elemis stuff. The only things I've stuck with religiously are the balm cleanser which I adore, and the tub of bath exfoliant scrub stuff, can't remember what it's called but it's lovely and always on my Christmas list.

The Marine Cream moisturiser was lovely but not really worth the considerable cost. I use a range of serums plus a separate SPF so moisturiser can be quite basic. It just needs to do the job of moisturising, ideally with some hyuralonic acid, that's all. I also bought their very expensive serum which was like an oil in a pump. It was horrible. Very silicone-y and it made my foundation roll and pill when I applied it on top.

I like Superdrug's vitamin E range, I use the hot cloth cleanser and the SPF 15 moisturiser.

I also like the new(ish) Biore SPF 50 moisturiser when it's sunny. And La Roche Posay sunscreen.

I'll use any shower gel really but like Weleda sea buckthorn.

I'll use any shampoo but have recently used Aveda cherry almond, The Cornish Seaweed company shampoo, L'Occitane Verbena and the Aveeno range.

I don't use much make-up but have Benefit Dandelion (which I am not sure suits my skin anymore, I might need another shade) and Boots Stay Perfect mascara.

I'll buy whatever toothpaste is on offer but I had the Holland & Barrett advent calendar which had a cinnamon toothpaste in it. Although I think it tastes a bit of soap I've been using it every few days.

God yes, totally forgot the Biore factor 50 spf. Brilliant stuff. Absorbs really cleanly so no trace, no white cast, not sticky, not greasy. Brilliant for using under make up. It doesn't make the make-up slide or pill. I've got through probably seven or eights bottles of it. That's another one I hate to run out of.

Body oil arrived today. I love it! I may have to buy the other fragrances too, in fact.

ergos · 12/01/2025 15:13

boots no 7 hydraluminous foundation
boots no 7 microdermabrasion total renewal (gives baby soft skin every time)
sephora satin lipstick in number 7, my favourite favourite shade
I need to find a new mascara. Used max factor 2000 calorie for decades, but it seems watery now and smudges
Olay total effect 7 signs moisturiser. Used numerous more expensive moisturisers. None as good as this.

Beesandhoney123 · 12/01/2025 15:26

Dior make up, tweezerman.

Uses to like bare minerals but it's hard to try as don't like buying first time online.

Used chanel no 5 perfume for life:)
And chloe Roses in the spring / summer.

Shampoo is usually whatever is on offer, same for conditioner.
Use taming elixir for hair.

Shower gel- can't find a nice one that isn't ridiculously expensive. Anything rose smelling.
Aveeno body lotion

Sanctuary face oil. If can find it and its on offer or clarins orchid oil.
No 7 serum only.

If my skin doesn't like creams, which is a lot, then they become foot creams:) any oil for nails hands and feet. Love nails Inc nail oil brush.

Nail varnish / nail stuff- dior. Game changer now I do my own.

@MadameSzyszkoBohusz I didn’t get the cabin pressure at first! Best series ever.

PureBoggin · 12/01/2025 21:43

@TwigletsAndRadishes The Aldi cleansing balm is a dupe of the Elemis ones. I've used both and the Aldi is just as good. They only have them every few months though so you need to stock up when they do come in.

YorkieTheRabbit · 12/01/2025 22:33

Nesti Dante soap bars

Nivea sensitive shaving gel for men

Nivea body lotion, tried lots of different brands over the years but always go back to this

Mitchum roll on

Elemis cleansing balm

Erborian bb cream

Bobby Brown pot rouge

VivienneDelacroix · 12/01/2025 22:42

It used to be the Benefit Bad Gal eyeliner when they did the fat pencil, now they only do the standard slim one, and it's not so different to other eyeliners.

The things I do still buy regularly:

  • Superdrug Eyebrow Waxing Strips
  • Mitchum roll-on Men's
  • Lush lipbalm (any flavour)
  • Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint
  • Beauty Pie Dr Glycolic toner
  • Benefit Bad Gal Mascara
  • Benefit Dandelion blusher
  • Benefit Benetint (original)
MorrisZapp · 12/01/2025 23:19

These are my favourite beauty threads! I had no idea Mitchum powder fresh was so popular, I thought I was a maverick 😂

I used to go through countless bottles of Avene hydrating serum, it was the only one that truly felt like a lotion instead of a sticky balm. It cost thirty quid a pop for a small bottle though and I got through it quickly.

Then I discovered the Curel Moisture Facial Milk which is vastly cheaper, I always buy it on three for two to make it an even better buy. It's brilliant.

Dove pro age body lotion, it's the kind that takes off the dead skin cells. It stinks, but it works. Fraction of the price of Ameliorate.

Lumene cheek tint blusher stuff in a tube. Better than Glossier.

Aveeno body lotion used as handcream, but the old formula which you can get on ebay. I used to be such a hand cream whore, but now I will only use this stuff.

MorrisZapp · 12/01/2025 23:21

Sainsbury's own brand waxing strips, in the blue box with the pic of the nice legs. Stickier than anything else on the market.

yohohoCrimbo · 13/01/2025 06:01

OP, could you please link the No More Yellow shampoo? Keen to give it a go.

Motnight · 13/01/2025 06:16

Great idea for a thread, Op.

For me, Mitchum deodorant. Jo Malone perfume. Aveeno gel moisturiser. Erborian CC cream.

user8762456 · 13/01/2025 06:24

Sunflowers perfume. It’s utterly out of place with the rest of my expensive products but it makes me smell like 1994.

CheeseandMarmiteToastie · 13/01/2025 06:52

The trouble with Aldi products - which I agree can be fab - is they are only available for a short time so by the time you’ve tried and liked something it’s often gone with no guarantee it’ll come back.

My favourites:

Urban Decay eyeliner - so soft and smudgy, I like Stash which is a greeny gold

Inkey List plumping lip gloss - actually works

Percy and Reed hair products especially Wonderbalm

Tweezerman tweezers

Simplehuman lighted mirror - I haven’t bought more than one of these as it was £££ but I’d 100% replace it if it broke, completed transformed getting ready on dark winter mornings

Jo Malone Wood Sage and Seasalt

Sanctuary Body Scrub

Essie Ballet Shoes nail varnish - in fact I like all of their range

Benefit Hoola Light and Dandelion

Flexitol Heel Balm

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream and Colour Corrector

Erborian CC Cream

I’m still on the hunt for a brow product that stays in place and looks natural and a mascara that lengthens without looking like spider legs.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/01/2025 06:58

I also rate Urban Decay eyeliners - I have a fabulous green one with one of their eyeshadows to match - but I’ve given up on their brown ones for everyday as they need sharpening so often that they just don’t last very long.

Urban Decay eyeshadows are the best. I’m only buying single eyeshadows from now on though, as I tend to only use one or two colours.

Sure Invisible deodorant- the black and white one

familyissues12345 · 13/01/2025 08:53

Deodorant - Mitchum powder fresh

Hair - herbal essences, I mix the fragrances around to what I fancy. Use a hair mask when I remember Grin

Make up - not precious about this, as long as it's cruelty free/vegan

Shower gel - Treaclemoon

Skincare - micellar water (what's on offer!), garnier spf serum. Face wash is whatever is on offer, again cruelty free

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 13/01/2025 09:01

I’ve never given it much thought, and I’m a sucker for a gift with purchase type offers change most things up a bit but even so there are some things I’m very loyal to…

batiste dry shampoo even though I find the spray nozzle fails on way too many bottles - is that just me?

marvis whitening toothpaste, pricey for what it is but everytime we try something different we come straight back to it

lancome hypnose mascara

Mitchum spray deodorant

coco mademoiselle perfume

Chanel les beiges bronzing cream, I always have a spare too as it often goes out of stock

i suspect there are more too
