Teacher vacancy advertised full time but not want 0.8

A teacher vacancy I’ve seen is for a full time post but I only wish to be employed 0.8 maximum. Do you think I should apply anyway and see if there’s any flexibility or not bother because if there was flexibility the advert would say so?

don’t bother
waste of your time (and theirs to some extent)

Glenthebattleostrich · 11/01/2025 10:42

Ring school and ask. The school i work at is struggling to recruit English teachers so would take .8 over non.

Floralnomad · 11/01/2025 10:49

I’d call and ask , nothing ventured nothing gained .

Call and ask before applying. I'm a part time teacher and I've always done this when applying for jobs. About 50/50 whether they've said "yes, you can apply". I got my current job doing that

LetsNCagain · 11/01/2025 10:52

Ps ask to speak to the HoD directly when you call. Give them a brief pitch of why you'd be good for the job. They'll say they'll speak to SLT about whether they can accommodate 0.8 and then call you back. This is what I've done each time I've applied for a new teaching job

KarminaBurana · 11/01/2025 10:52

I would agree, contact them to enquire. They may consider it, but don't waste their time by going for it if they only want someone ft.
We interviewed for a job which was for one year only. The woman we offered the job to said that she'd only take it if it was permanent, we'd made it clear that it wasn't.

Bluevelvetsofa · 11/01/2025 13:19

Depends whether it’s primary or secondary. Primary, you might be able to do a job share, but secondary, you might find yourself with trapped time to accommodate the timetable and no real benefit to you.

chocolatespreadsandwich · 11/01/2025 13:24

Call and ask them?

onlyconnect · 11/01/2025 13:27

Definitely ask!
There's a shortage of teachers.
Or if you think you can impress them, go to the interview, be offered the job, then negotiate

Apply butvstate clearly that you can only work 0.8 over 4 days. If they can jiggle timetables or have a bit of slack they might employ you if you're good enough!

modgepodge · 11/01/2025 13:39

Definitely worth an ask in the current climate. Schools are desperate. A teacher 4 days a week is better than no teacher at all, which may be the alternative.

MathsTeacherandLoveit · 11/01/2025 13:42

Yes absolutely contact them and ask if it's worth applying.

Although just as a warning, I applied for a temporary post saying that if there was any way that it could be permanent, then I would love to work there but I couldn't if it was temporary. They invited me for interview. I was there all day so work had to be set for the lessons that I was missing. I did an extra specially fabulous observed full lesson, finally interviewed at 4.30 and they still told me it was for a temporary role.
I was so frustrated with the total waste of time!

LostMyLanyard · 11/01/2025 13:57

Primary or secondary?

I'm a primary deputy and we wouldn't consider a 0.8 if we needed a full time class teacher, as filling that 1 day a week with a job share would be nigh on impossible (nobody wants to work just one day a week in primary). It would require a TA or HLTA to cover it...who wouldn't be expected to plan and would then not be available elsewhere in the school to support children. This would mean you'd have to plan for the day you're not in class so that the TA/HLTA could deliver the lessons.

We would consider a .6 though as finding a .4 job share would be easier.

No idea about secondary 🤷‍♀️

oustedbymymate · 11/01/2025 13:58

Ring/email and ask. Depends how much interest in tbe vacancy if they can make it work. If your English /maths teacher they will probably snap your hand off

There's at least two teachers at my kids primary that do 0.8 with one day a week off.

LostMyLanyard · 11/01/2025 14:14

@IKnowThis we have one at my school, but she's a long standing member of staff and requested a reduction in days due to coming back after having twins. The 'one day' she's off is covered by a TA, who has had to be pulled from other classes that she supported. The teacher plans for that day and the TA delivers that planning. As I said in my post...we wouldn't consider going someone new on these terms as we'd have to pull another TA away from supporting other classes. We've tried in the past to recruit a .2 teacher (one day a week) and had zero applicants. We've tried do have two job share classes, one with a .6 and .4 share, the other with 50/50 share. These are much easier to recruit for.

LostMyLanyard · 11/01/2025 14:16

So many typos! *we currently have..

IKnowThis · 11/01/2025 14:19

Fair enough, just wanted to note that it does happen so can be possible. One of them only started in the middle of last year so did 0.8 from the beginning. Not sure about the other one as she was there before my DC started.

Whilst it’s not ideal, if the alternative was no applicants, wouldn’t you go with it? Otherwise it might be a TA 5 days a week…!

MrBiscuits24 · 11/01/2025 17:18

Oh absolutely worth asking! I email in advance.

LostMyLanyard · 11/01/2025 17:24

@modgepodge fortunately in our case we always get lots of applicants for full time teachers. It's much harder to recruit one for a .2 post though.

Agree . You will be wasting their time then they will need to find somebody else to pick up the extra hours.

noblegiraffe · 11/01/2025 17:28

We would advertise a post as full time but would definitely consider 0.8 if you asked (secondary maths).

Teachymummy · 11/01/2025 17:28

Does anyone know if this would work for TAs and when would I ask?

I'm currently training to be a ta and and also looking for a job. Have seen some I like that are full time but ideally I would like 0.5-0.8. when should I ask if this is a possibility?

LottieMary · 11/01/2025 17:35

Definitely worth asking esp secondary.
We'd consider it, if you were the best applicant, as definitely there's always some flexibility
