Teacher vacancy advertised full time but not want 0.8

A teacher vacancy I’ve seen is for a full time post but I only wish to be employed 0.8 maximum. Do you think I should apply anyway and see if there’s any flexibility or not bother because if there was flexibility the advert would say so?

the school has the budget for a full time worker
hence advertising for one
why on earth would they select one 0.8 and one 0.2
hassle and expense
don’t bother op

Because the choice is often 0.8 or no one.

10 years ago this absolutely would have been the case. Now there is SUCH a shortage of teachers that schools are having to be more flexible or have no teacher at all. I know of a school (2 form entry) which started an academic year 3 teachers short. They had supply teachers in 3 classes on the first day, with TAs named as the teacher for continuity with parents.

I’ve just left a teaching role. Not a single person applied for my job. Had a good applicant asked if they’d be considered but for slightly less hours, I suspect the head would have bitten their hand off. Instead they had multiple supply agencies on the case finding someone and they got someone sorted a week before the end of term. I assume they are paying through the nose as it’s through an agency.

Ask. They might be desperate and accept

Beggars can't be choosers.

Definitely worth putting in an application, as long as you state clearly (at the end 😉) that you're only looking for 0.8 at this point.

Secondary maths we would definitely consider you. We often end up having a degree of flexibility where someone else in the dept has been doing eg PSHE and is able to pick up the extra teaching hours in dept instead. I applied for a full time job only wanting 0.5 and they actually ended up employing 1.5 (ie a full timer and me as well).

Lots of schools advertise FT as they think they will get a better field than if they advertise for PT.

Could you go for job & if you get to interview then ask on the day?

LDpuppy · 11/01/2025 20:10

Tell them before interview - we (nhs) aren't allowed to offer part time if advertised as full time.

LividNewYear · 11/01/2025 20:13

I did exactly this.

Emailed the head (tbf I knew them previously) and said look, I think I’d be great at your advertised job but only at 0.8. Is it worth applying?

Head said absolutely worth it and I got it. Tbh they get the work of ft from me for 0.8 of UPS3 & TLR so it’s a good deal for them.

Nothing at all for you to lose by asking.

They wouldn't employ one at 20%

LetsNCagain · 11/01/2025 20:30

If op is in secondary, there doesn't need to be a 0.2 part timer to balance her 0.8. That's simply not how secondary school timetabling works. You have individual classes that you see for two hours a week each (or thereabouts) in timetabled blocks.

GRCP · 11/01/2025 20:47

Head of English here - I would absolutely consider 0.8 for the right person, so worth asking.

Because they beleive she's the best teacher out of those they interview

We have advertised for full time staff and then employed the successful candidate on a PT basis - eg one teacher wanted every Wednesday Pm off as she took her DC to regular medical appointments and the consultant clinic was held on Wednesdays. She ended up agreeing to have that 1/2 day as paid PPA instead of PPA in school.
If youre a strong candidate, then a school could make it work.
