Are window shutters gonna go out of fashion?

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 09/01/2025 20:29

Im thinking about making the investment - over £1200 for shutters for two windows with blinds2go

But I get the feeling that they're gonna go out of style soon, with people choosing other window treatments

I've currently got white blinds with tapes and they're a nightmare to clean

I was thinking of getting dark brown wood blinds with similar coloured tapes instead

Just wondering if others spend their valuable time thinking about such a boring topic 😄

I've no idea what's in fashion but I decided that shutters would make the room too dark and be too much faff to clean.
Plus I just think they'd look really daft in a 3 bed semi.

We love our bedroom shutters. They look so neat! They don’t make the room too dark - the slats can go in various positions to let more or less light in. And they’re easy to clean.

Doesn't everything go out of fashion eventually? If you love 'em get 'em OP!
We used to have them and I did like the clean look it gave to the room but it's not particularly cosy looking.

Thanks but I am very fussy about the direction the blind slats go in so I couldn't be repositioning my shutter slats all the time, I could not cope! Wink

I’ve had mine for 10 years and still love them. They are much easier to clean than blinds, especially if you get wider slats. Quick wipe with a damp cloth once month is all they require.

They’re a classic IMO - like shaker kitchens and antiques - they don’t go out of style. But if you’re the type who is wanting everything “on trend” you’re on a hiding to nothing anyway. I don’t follow instagram trends and things like that I just buy what I like, not what’s considered fashionable. I wouldn’t get them if you think you’ll go off them though - you’d be better off with something that’s easily changed.

LBOCS2 · 09/01/2025 22:19

I would say that they're already on their way out.

That's only a problem of course, if you care what trends are in. But at this point they've been around for a long time and they're being pulled out of the early adopters' houses already.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 09/01/2025 22:19

I do think, do what you love, but I want a nice classy look for my windows in an otherwise terrible area

I feel like, the same with panelling, it's gonna be overdone and go out of style in a big way

if i commit and the look becomes dated, I'll be so upset because windows is something I care about now 🙃

What are the early adopters replacing them with, do you think?

Our house has had shutters since it was built sometime in the 1800s.

Shutters are beyond fashion imho!

Nourishinghandcream · 09/01/2025 22:21

Spent over £5k on ours and TBH we could not care less if they go out of fashion as we just love them.😁
They are partnered with heavy, blackout curtains so between them we vary the amount of light, sound & insulation across the windows.

In our previous house we had shutter blinds fitted and took away the curtains...... big mistake so we remedied that in our new house.

I bet they're lovely and worth the money. I would have them just as they are and agree re the cold

Although I doubt they're much colder than blinds

I do think curtains are coming back tbh

That's been my thinking but now I've got myself overly invested tbh

I think of style and comfort for interior design, not fashion. No doubt all the grey sofa owners are seriously going off them now.

IMO white wooden shutters never go out of style. Some other won’t agree of course. Where possible our homes need to be furnished in a way that makes us feel comfortable and happy .

I live in a really nice area, way too posh for me 😂, but most houses around here have got them so if you like them you should get them. Who cares what random people on the street think anyway 🤷

Really? I find that hard to believe. Where I live (not meaning to sound like a knob but a very desirable area) people who are buying and renovating their houses are still installing them - I’d say they’re more popular than ever. I’m friendly with the guy who installed ours and I saw him recently and he said business is great.

I love pulling up to my house and seeing the shutters at all the windows - they really elevate the house to a higher standard IMO.

I do love properly tailored curtains in gorgeous fabrics too though. My worst window treatments are those horrible verticals Venetian blinds and slatted blinds (the type with strings) we had one in the downstairs loo and it was so difficult to clean I just threw it away when it got really dusty and had another set of shutters installed!

But don’t you see the trouble with thinking like this?

Buy them because you love them - not in order to be fashionable.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 09/01/2025 22:39

Has anyone seen black/very dark wood shutters? Can they be painted?

I've got the ones with the string and they're giving me the ick

Agree re wanting something easy to clean

And agree that i should do what I please 😄 but that's only in theory. I mostly want to be cool 🙃🙃

😄 sounds amazing, I'd love to live somewhere too posh for me 😄

Sat here in my scruffy t-shirt eating biscuits out the pack, I definitely fit in here

Thanks, the last time i went to a nice area was a few years ago and the houses did look so lovely with their shutters

I'm adding mine as we decorate rooms so so far only have the lounge but I LOVE them. I had Venetians before and they are 100% quicker to clean and they look clean once you've cleaned them too. I like the room dark but if I'm reading I open them right up and it's like having the open window.

I've also got a navy kitchen though so maybe I'm just outdated already 😉

SharpOpalNewt · 09/01/2025 22:46

I've never seen many shutters on houses in the UK. Felt really unfriendly to me in northern France when I was living there, everyone with their shutters down in the evening. Horrible metal ones like on an industrial building.

I have brown wooden ones in our bedroom and white in the rest of the house. I wish I’d gone for white in there too. I have thought about painting them, but with all the slats and pokey bits, I think it would be a nightmare.

I'm in trackies and a hoodie, not a look you see round here😂 see, you liked them in those houses and you know they'd look good in yours so you should definitely go for it 😁

CheshireCat1 · 09/01/2025 22:48

We love ours, keeps the house cool in summer and warm in winter. They’re so easy to adjust when the sun position changes during the day.
