Are window shutters gonna go out of fashion?

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 09/01/2025 20:29

Im thinking about making the investment - over £1200 for shutters for two windows with blinds2go

But I get the feeling that they're gonna go out of style soon, with people choosing other window treatments

I've currently got white blinds with tapes and they're a nightmare to clean

I was thinking of getting dark brown wood blinds with similar coloured tapes instead

Just wondering if others spend their valuable time thinking about such a boring topic 😄

Our house has had shutters since it was built sometime in the 1800s.

Shutters are beyond fashion imho!

Ours too! Though they clearly went out of fashion at some point because they were all painted in a few decades back and I had pry them open again with a chisel. We’re lucky because a lot of houses had them removed. I love our shutters.

Glitchymn1 · 10/01/2025 21:30

Personally not to my taste, but we only have curtains at the back of the house. Looks over woodland and I never close them, even at night. If you like them and they seem very practical then I’d go for it.

I really wouldn’t worry about fashion. Fashion is fickle and inexplicable. If you doubt me, Google festoon curtains!

Ewww just googled 😄😄😄

Shutters and panelling as trends are considered to be out of fashion but if they look good in your house surely that's the most important thing.

I do think that a lot of people that's put panelling up will take them down and they'll become the new crushed velvet

The OP is talking about plantation shutters, the ones with tilting slats. We had your sort of shutters in our last house, they are a lovely period feature though they do a different job.

What are the early adopters replacing them with, do you think?

Georgian style bifold shutters (solid) hidden behind curtains

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 10/01/2025 21:39

We have white shutters. They are great at keeping out both the cold and strong sunlight. Who cares whether they are in fashion. They look gorgeous and are practical,

jumping2 · 10/01/2025 21:42

We own a blinds and shutter company. Shutters are never out of fashion! They're timeless. Don't go dark though it will really darken your room where as white reflects white. And you want at least 63mm or 76mm slats to let in enough light. You'd have to much going on at your windows with smaller.

These could be cute? What are they doing for privacy, do you think

Ooo thank you

Is anyone doing solid ones?

@mumofoneAlonebutokay we have done a few but nothing like we do slatted. The thing with solid is it's all or nothing. You can get solid base ones too which are solid at the bottom and split to Louvre on the top

Yes this is the style trending in design circles. Accompanied by curtains so you only see the shutters when closed.

you have to have the right windows for them though.

Armchairs · 10/01/2025 22:02

I reckon their popularity is waning, but if you love them - go for it! And their popularity might just plateau. Trendy folks near me are all about “cafe curtains” at the mo.

My money is on you starting to see this change. Plantation shutters have been around for a long time now. Solid is far more on trend

Louise121806 · 10/01/2025 22:02

No, I think they're classic and worth the investment if you can afford them. Dark would can make your room a little darker but still look great with the right decor.

So the curtains show from the outside during the day?

Ooh what are the right windows? Victorian sash?

@Ciri yeah maybe so! They defo have a place. I don't think solid can just go in any house. And customers do like the light control of the shutters offering privacy and letting light in. The solid ones we have done have been on very old properties with very big windows. You'd never see them in new builds!

I've got a 1940s house with large upvc windows - they're big though

Even typing this, i don't think it would work 🥺🤭

It’s less about the windows themselves and more about the side reveals on the window surround. They need something to fold up against during the day (when they are basically folded up and out of the way.). During the day it would look like you have curtains. At night you can close the shutters and get excellent insulation and complete privacy.

Coldanddamp · 10/01/2025 22:15

Shutters are timeless on the right properties, they are practical for one. It’s quite normal to see them paired with curtains.

Coldanddamp · 10/01/2025 22:16

We have big sash windows and before shutters I had to close the curtains in the living room during the day as the sun would hurt my eyes/couldn’t watch the tv.

I've got big side reveals as well, I could see them folding against it, although maybe poking out a bit, which might look weird

It seems to me that virtually every 3 bed semi has white shutters now. I’m afraid I think they’re a bit naff, like the ubiquitous fake panelling, grey kitchens and internal black crittal doors everywhere.

They will probably be the lovely folding ones that close back into a soffit at each side of the windows (?)
I lived in a house with these and LOVED them.
they were stained and varnished ( original finish) in my day ( teenager!) but now they are painted.
( I sneaked a look on rightmove)

Solid shutters are so warm and secure- very different to the slatted ones.

Those windows would look good with thick, slatted white shutters. From the inside you don't really notice the shape of the individual window panes.
