Do you have HIVE?

DustyLee123 · 09/01/2025 07:50

I need a new thermostat and clock really as mine is so old, and I’m considering HIVE. Can anyone who has it tell me if it’s good or not, and is it easy enough for a DIYer to fit themselves?

OP posts:

I have Nest which is the same thing. They need fitting by a gas engineer.

ScoobyDoesnt · 09/01/2025 08:03

I have Hive, it’s really easy to use from my phone, and have had no issues with it in the 4 years I’ve had it.

It’s in my hall, as that’s likely the coldest area of the house - I was recommended not to put it in a naturally warm room.

Mine was installed when I had to have a new boiler, so no idea though about if you can do it yourself.

I hate hive, it randomly locked me out, couldn't access it, wouldn't log me back in, I can't change the schedule on my phone just on the wall, my son leant against the dial yesterday which worried me as it activates it. I don't know what the bots in the airing cupboard do and I cba trawling through the online stuff, I'd rather have a booklet.

Talipesmum · 09/01/2025 08:08

We have it, it’s great, but we didn’t fit it ourselves - heating engineer did it for us.

Really like being able to control the heating from my phone. Also it’s way easier to set schedules and adjust them on the hive app than any thermostat I’ve ever had in the past, with obscure button pushing instructions or very basic inflexible options. You can see how the temp of the house changes after the heating kicks in, how quickly it cools etc.

We have it. It's very good.

Saschka · 09/01/2025 08:14

I have it, only had it a week but seems fine so far. You need it professionally installed because the sensor is attached to your boiler, but it only takes 30 minutes or so.

My brother has Nest and is happy with them too.

SkyGrant · 09/01/2025 08:17

Hi Op Ours was fitted by British Gas and it is the easiest programmer we have ever used it can be set up or changed in less than 5 minutes.

It can also be adjusted to get heating at any time 30 mins to 4 hours if required.

Totaleclipseofthemind · 09/01/2025 08:17

We have a Hive love controlling everything from my phone and easy to use on the wall too.

Had a couple of internet company changes too with no problems reconnecting.

ObliviousCoalmine · 09/01/2025 08:18

I have Hive. My dad fitted mine. I've had it years and really like it.

HappyHolidai · 09/01/2025 08:20

I have Hive and also the programmable TVRs. I love being able to control the different rooms on different timetables, so bedroom warm in evening but living room warm at lunchtime, etc. You need the programmable TVRs for that.

Unfortunately the fancy learning and data analysis tools in Hive don't take any notice of the TVRs, which is a big gap IMHO and for my set-up makes the fancy Hive thermostat an expensive white elephant.

Overall I am definitely satisfied but it could be significantly better.

CustardCream31 · 09/01/2025 08:20

Love Hive. Brilliant to be able to control it all from my phone.

TheFlis · 09/01/2025 08:21

We have Hive and love it (was fitted last year when we got a new boiler). It makes it so easy to adapt your heating schedule to changes in weather like the current cold snap, and I love that if we have been away, we can turn the heating on while we travel back so we arrive at a warm house.

Upstartled · 09/01/2025 08:23

We have it. I think it's really good. I like being able to set the thermostat and then being able to see how and when the boiler is kicking in to achieve that. It means I have a better understanding of how my home holds heat and make it work more efficiently to keep it comfortable. Being able to kick the heating on remotely before we get home is great too.

EasternStandard · 09/01/2025 08:24

Yes we’ve had it for a while, it’s really good

User19876536484 · 09/01/2025 08:26

We have had a Hive for around 8 years. It works for us. We can control and monitor the hot water and heating from wherever we are which means no wasting fuel heating an empty house and always coming home to a warm house.

It took my husband less than 30 minutes to fit.

kitchenhelprequired · 09/01/2025 08:27

Have used a Hive in 3 different properties - always engineer installed. Currently also have Hive TRV's on all but bathroom radiators so can individually control all rooms. Don't need heat upstairs for anything other than first thing in the morning and right before bed so set all radiators independently depending on use. Have had the odd glitch over the years but nothing that hasn't been sorted quickly so would recommend.

No33 · 09/01/2025 08:28

I have nest and hate it.

Sorry ETA why!

I have it set to come on at certain times via the app in my phone and it just completely ignores it. I'm woken most nights by it kicking in even though it is already at 18, so not preventing freezing pipes.

Can't control the water through it.

I rent, and it just seems pointless.

My sister has hive and loves it though.

CambiarDelNombre · 09/01/2025 08:28

We have had it for a good few years. Initially just the main thermostat and then in summer 2020 I got TRVs for all the radiators (in anticipation of working from home still being a thing for us all). It saved us approx £150 the first year compared to the previous one due to being able to only heat the rooms we needed.

I love the flexibility of it all. We have different schedules for weekdays and weekends and different rooms in the house.

AnotherDelphinium · 09/01/2025 08:37

I do, with the TRVs and I absolutely love it.

I just had the hive thermostat in my last house, but it was a two up two down terrace with open plan. And I self-installed.

Current house was again a self-install (you need a bit of DIY competence) and I love being able to warm my bedroom up for shift work without paying a fortune to heat the rest of the house.

TheseCalmSeas · 09/01/2025 08:44

I love Hive. Has it fitted in my old house too so going on 5yrs.

British Gas fitted the unit to the boiler and I just have the thermostat on a stand currently.

Dead easy to use on your phone and holiday mode is handy

KitsyWitsy · 09/01/2025 08:46

I have hive. Very happy with it.

Newhi · 09/01/2025 08:46

We have Nest and it’s great. No issues with it and love coming home to a warm house, or shouting to Alexa to turn the heating up when I’m upstairs!

Edited

You can turn off the intuitive setting and just do it manually though.

How much is HIVE to fit in a bog standard 1970s 3 bed house?

Fluff111 · 09/01/2025 08:49

I have Hive, British Gas fitted it 5 years ago. Works brilliantly and good to control heating when abroad in the winter months. There may be sales on now.
