Do you have HIVE?

I need a new thermostat and clock really as mine is so old, and I’m considering HIVE. Can anyone who has it tell me if it’s good or not, and is it easy enough for a DIYer to fit themselves?

My friend can literally see her breath in her room. She lives with her landlady who refuses to give her any access to Hive and dictates if and when the heating can be on. Of course my friend wants to move but that is easier said than done.

I've had Hive for a while now and it's great to be able to boost heat and water remotely - when out for the day and especially coming home from holiday to hot water and heat on if needed.

However, I find the timer settings awkward; doesn't seem possible to get it to go on and off 3 times. Plus I wish I could remotely access the temperature of the hot water and not just the house temperature.

You can do six time slots per day - that’s what we use. Though we don’t have it going on and off exactly, we just have the overnight slot down at 14 degrees (which it never reaches), and varying between 16 and 19.5 over the day. I like the timeline where you can see the effect on your house temp of a bit of heating kicking in - and you can see how much easier it is to maintain the temp on warm days vs freezing cold ones!
Here’s New Year’s Day last week.

I don't see how hive can put in functionality to override tight landlords/ladies.

I've had Hive for about 5 years and love it.My son lives in our house in England and I live abroad - but I can control the house from my phone. My son visited us for uni holidays, the house was empty so hot water was off and thermostats dialed down to 15C. The day before he returned I pushed the heating back up and turned on the hot water - all from 2500 miles away.

Also there are sensors that can tell you whether doors and windows are open, so it's a bit like a burglar alarm, but with notification straight to your phone. And timer switches that you can plug appliances into, and smart light bulbs, all of which can be set on a schedule. Light bulbs are a bit expensive though.

Best to have the core system installed by a BG/Hive engineer. And better to have separate controllers for upstairs and downstairs if you have the plumbing for it.

There is a subscription option but it seems to be just for data analysis and I haven't felt the need. The basic system is pretty good, you can see a graph of when the boiler came on, what the temperature was etc.

@peppermintgreengrass you can't. I spent several calls with Hive tech and it isn't possible. New hub and new account is the only way. There's loads online about it. The hubs are designed for you to take to a new property and be linked to an existing hive (the tech guys can do that) but without all the account info a hub is connected to there's nothing you can do with it.

I would just set up an account for the house and change the password whenever someone new moves in instead of faffing about like this.

That would be fab, if abusive ex would give me the details I stead of turning down my bedroom to 7 degrees for shits and giggles.

We had Hive fitted a couple of months ago as our old thermostat broke

OH works 4on 4off shifts getting up at 4am so the ability to easily change programmes is a bonus to us

I used the app, OH relies on the boost in the airing cupboard. There is also the square box thingy that we use when in the house but mostly use the app

It's great being able to control while we're away and can out on before we arrive home

Disconnect it from the internet so he can’t.

We have Hive. Keep an eye on the battery levels otherwise great when controlled from your phone.

Sorry, this advice was aimed at the person who posted about being a landlord.

Yes, you can. Set up an account for the house with an email address you control so they can’t change the password and not tell you, give the tenants the password and change it when they move out.

We gave our buyer the Hive password when we moved out, transferred the account to her email address and left the hub. You don’t have to change them. They just want you to to make money.
