Baked potatoes

Ok, I have to ask—what’s with the English calling a baked potato a “jacket potato”? It’s baked, not wearing an actual jacket. We don’t call a roasted chicken a “crispy skin bird,” so why do they need a separate name for a perfectly baked tattie?

And another thing… why are you having it as a side dish with your actual dinner? I’ve seen English pals having a jacket potato alongside a steak or (God forbid) lasagne. LASAGNE! It’s not a portion of chips we’re talking about here—it’s a whole potato.

In Scotland, it’s simple—you bake a tattie, throw on some butter and a mountain of cheese, or go all out with beans or tuna mayo. Done. It’s lunch. It’s hearty, it’s filling, it doesn’t need to “go” with anything else because it is the main event.

Is this an English thing I’ve missed? Or just me? What are your thoughts?

PS: Let’s not even get started on folk who microwave them… criminal.

There were loads of jacket potato places and vans in England in the 80s and 90s. We had Spud U Like. It just went out of fashion.

We have jacket potatoes takeaways near me, also there is a guy called Spud Man who has gone viral on social media

Hi OP I was brought up in south England and we always called them baked potatoes but some people started calling them “potatoes in their jackets “ and that got shortened to jacket potatoes. You can sort of see why: pigs in blankets aren’t really pigs in blankets, are they!

I actually prefer jacket potatoes done in the microwave, think they taste better.

I call it a baked potato as I never peel potatoes when I boil them either so they are all cooked in their "jackets".

I don't understand what's wrong with having it as part of an actual meal however, why does the way it's cooked make any difference?

Thank you baked potato.

That song is now stuck in my head.

As soon as I started reading this I knew you were Scottish. I had a Scottish boyfriend many moons ago who used to get annoyed about the same thing. He worked at a shop when he was in Scotland called, imaginatively, "the baked potato shop" and was quite precious about the naming convention.

Think it stuck though as I always call them baked potatoes

Wintershealing · 07/01/2025 22:04

Oh great, now all I want is a Jacky P!

Borborygmus · 07/01/2025 22:25

Well I've always called them jacket potatoes, and regard it as perfectly normal to have them as a side dish with my actual dinner.

Thanks to Victoria Wood, I can't see Spud-u-like without hearing "Spud-oo-li-kay" in my head 😂. Love a crispy-skinned baked tattie.

I thought you were going to say your DM called candy floss barbe à papa (daddy’s beard) @GivingUpFinally, not cotton candy. 🤮

Yes cotton candy feels like an anticlimax 🤣

My mum always called them 'baked potatoes in their jackets'. Belt and braces.

Love that! You definitely know what you're getting!!
