Baked potatoes

Ok, I have to ask—what’s with the English calling a baked potato a “jacket potato”? It’s baked, not wearing an actual jacket. We don’t call a roasted chicken a “crispy skin bird,” so why do they need a separate name for a perfectly baked tattie?

And another thing… why are you having it as a side dish with your actual dinner? I’ve seen English pals having a jacket potato alongside a steak or (God forbid) lasagne. LASAGNE! It’s not a portion of chips we’re talking about here—it’s a whole potato.

In Scotland, it’s simple—you bake a tattie, throw on some butter and a mountain of cheese, or go all out with beans or tuna mayo. Done. It’s lunch. It’s hearty, it’s filling, it doesn’t need to “go” with anything else because it is the main event.

Is this an English thing I’ve missed? Or just me? What are your thoughts?

PS: Let’s not even get started on folk who microwave them… criminal.

When I was first seeing my now ex husband, he asked me if I wanted a piece!
I was like… Errrmmmm….
he then went on to say it was a sandwich!!
Having said that you should have seen his face when I told him we were having Frog in a Bog for Dinner 😂(we have always called Toad in a hole this in our family!)

sugarapplelane · 07/01/2025 15:35

I’m English and I call them both baked potatoes and jacket potatoes.

It really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things

Why has such a small thing got up your nose? You sound quite aggressive on your posts.

I’m sure Scot’s have their own name for things.

Lets celebrate the differences rather than have a pop.

brokenwand · 07/01/2025 15:39

Nothing wrong with microwaving a jacket potato, I microwave mine then finish them in the air fryer - can't tell the difference

Moving on from cock scratchings, @StormingNorman, no need to grill the skins, just chuck them in a roasting pan in the still hot oven while you carve. If you aren’t bothered about cholesterol, you could make gribenes the traditional way. They were originally a tasty leftover from sautéing chicken skins to render the fat to make schmaltz, sometimes with onions to flavour them. You can actually buy the chicken skins leftover from skinless fillets at the butcher. Just saying…

Dread to think what you think of Toad in the Home.

We have Frog In The Pocket here!

I just think a potato based dish served with a pasta based dish is madness!

Like you wouldn't have Spag Bol and mash potato.... carbonara and dauphinois...

No, I get that. I wouldn't either.

I would eat jacket potato with meat though.

The only time I double carb is garlic bread.

It's grim 🤢

It's the best bit 😋

Ohwtfnow · 07/01/2025 15:46

I can’t get wound up about jacket or baked - they’re interchangeable to me. And having one with steak or similar is fine - it’s the same amount of potato as mash or chips unless you have a massive one. I wouldn’t eat one with other carbs though, but I wouldn’t eat any carbs with carbs so it’s not a jacket potato thing.

It is isn't a pop it's just an observation I have had and I'm not being aggressive. This post isn't deep and is meant to be a laugh.

YANBU. It's a whole meal in itself, too filling as a side, and I love the smell of baked potatoes wafting around Edinburgh from the Tempting Tattie etc.

Not sure why takeways centred around these aren't such a thing in England.. Yummmm

If you chopped the potato up, surely it’s the same amount of potato as in a portion of fries or a roast potato portion? Jacket potato is a common accompaniment for a steak in the US and the Netherlands (probably a lot of other places too!).

If you think jacket potato is a weird phrase, you don’t want to know what my foreign mother calls candy floss!!

Go on then what does she call Candy floss?

MaltipooMama · 07/01/2025 15:48

Ooh I would always have a jacket potato as a side for steak! I just see it as the carb element of my meal, in this case in place of chips!

NorthRiding · 07/01/2025 15:53

Rolls, you say?

"Hamish, you've ruined these teacakes, they're completely blackened! They're fit for the bin!"

"Och, no, Senga, we'll call them well-fired rolls, and charge extra."

cantthinkofausername26 · 07/01/2025 15:55

What a pointless post. Why is it called toad in the hole when there's no actual toads or holes?? Why are chips called chips and not potato rectangles?? Get a life

DiscoBeat · 07/01/2025 15:57

Better out than in. Hope you feel better now 🥔

I mean I get there’s other ways to cook it other than a microwave but god who’s got an hour to wait for a baked potato (and yes I’m Scottish so it’s a baked potato). And yes OP it’s absolutely not a side.

You can have it quicker in the microwave but it’s so good in the air fryer.

DiscoBeat · 07/01/2025 15:58

Also, please don't start another thread about pigs in blankets

ThatsNotMyTeen · 07/01/2025 15:58

I am also Scottish and call them baked potatoes. I might have a small one as a side to a dinner. A bigger one will be a lunch or dinner (along with fillings obv)

I'll sit with my diluting juice and can of ginger and think about how different life would be if I was across the border.

I call them Jackie Ps.

Bring it on.

mumda · 07/01/2025 16:03

Ah you'll be one of those people who eats skinned potatoes, or skinned and broken up finely potatoes?
