Talk to me about Pod Casts

Dueanamechange2025 · 06/01/2025 16:20

I know I am probably late to the party but I have never listened to a pod cast!

Where do I down load them, are there free sites or do I have to pay for each one?

Any easy listening to start with (ideally whilst walking and gym).

I know I sound ancient, and generally quite techy but just never gone here before.

Look at back catalogue of BBC Sounds. Free in UK.

MounjaroOnMyMind · 06/01/2025 16:24

What are your interests? There are tons of podcasts about, so it would be good to know what you like so we can recommend something good.

I use Spotify on my phone. I downloaded the app - there's a paid version but I have the free version. Then I search the things I liked and followed those people, then look at Your Library and New Episodes every day, so see what's new.

What do you like to read or watch on TV?

BuzzieLittleBee · 06/01/2025 16:26

I just use Spotify. There are also lots on BBC Sounds.

Start with what you're interested in, or what you'd like to know more about. I like podcasts linked with things I'm watching on TV - so the Taskmaster podcast, or the Traitors Uncloaked. I also really enjoy Ed Gamble/James Acaster's 'Off Menu' podcast. And Richard Osman has a good one - 'The rest is Entertainment' which I find interesting.

What kind of thing are you interested in? Do you want to be informed/educated, or entertained? Are there any presenters/personalities you really like (or would actively avoid)?

I keep meaning to try Gabby Logan's 'Midlife' podcast - she has some interesting guests.

I really like Desert Island Discs, which I know is on the radio every week, but I listen as a podcast afterwards, as I don't tend to be near a radio when it's on.

Do you need a TV licence to download that though?

lljkk · 06/01/2025 16:31

you don't need tv license to use bbc sounds

You don't need it, but you're meant to have one.

No you aren't.

This is straight from the BBC site:

"You don't need a TV licence to use BBC Sounds. The law applies to watching and downloading TV programmes, including via BBC iPlayer"

MounjaroOnMyMind · 06/01/2025 16:41

Oh sorry, I thought it applied to BBC Sounds, too.

You are me 😆 I like all these too. Plus some music ones. I like Adam Buxton too.

GameOfJones · 06/01/2025 16:46

I was a pretty late convert too, I only got into them last year and now I am hooked. If I am walking, at the gym or cleaning the house I'm listening to a podcast.

As others have said, BBC Sounds is free and has a lot available. I ended up downloading Spotify and now have a paid subscription and I listen to all my podcasts that way, including some that are also available on BBC Sounds like 'Uncanny' (people telling their strange/paranormal experiences and a sceptic plus a paranormal believer discuss each case.)

There are many, many podcasts out there on pretty much every topic you can think off. I agree that 'Off Menu' is a good listen usually. I also like some of the True Crime investigative journalism podcasts like 'In the dark'

Hohofortherobbers · 06/01/2025 16:49

I use the free version of Pocket Casts, download the app and browse for things that interest you. I like true crime.

Winterskyfall · 06/01/2025 17:07

If you are a gym goer I enjoy the following podcasts, both free. Jordan Syatt & How to become a personal trainer. They do talk about personal training and answer gym questions as well as other things but I mostly listen because they are enjoyable to listen to and light hearted and there are no adverts.

I use apple podcast app to listen. I think it was already installed on my iphone but you can also download it.

PureBoggin · 06/01/2025 17:20

There are podcasts about EVERYTHING! What interests you? Food, fashion, entertainment, true crime, paranormal, sport, news, history. You're in for a treat.

Dueanamechange2025 · 07/01/2025 16:34

Thank you all! Will start with BBC Sounds as I don't have a spotify subscription (we do have amazon prime and music, does that have any??).

Will check out the apple one too but assume that won't be free.

Books I like thrillers or chick lit, I have started MJ so trying to lose weight and get healthy, have ND kids so like to listen to stuff on that, mid 40s peri female stuff lol.

Do you have audible?,there are podcasts on there, BBC sounds is good though.

Bjorkdidit · 07/01/2025 16:47

Be aware that the BBC Sounds app is dreadful especially for series, it's incredibly difficult to listen to anything in order and downloading is really fiddly compared with other platforms. It's also really bad at skipping their incredibly repetitive adverts in the car - fine within the app though. Where possible I listen to their content elsewhere, but it's not always available or it's delayed a month.

I use Antennapod but I keep meaning to look at Spotify too as I do have a subscription.

I don't think I've ever heard ads on the Sounds app. Are you using it within the UK, or from abroad (I know there are ads on the BBC website if you're abroad so wondered if it was the same).

I've never had any issues with glitches either, or episodes playing in the correct order.

MounjaroOnMyMind · 07/01/2025 17:28

I've never heard ads on the BBC Sounds app.

One thing I've noticed with Spotify is that if I add episodes to a playlist and play that, I don't get any adverts.

TabloidFootprints · 07/01/2025 17:30

I subscribe to Newscast and some others on BBC Sounds and never have any problems playing them in order, also there are no ads

AltitudeCheck · 07/01/2025 17:40

Spotify (the free version) has loads, you can fast forward through the ads. Great for walking/ gym and while driving... Currently on my list are...

Where should we begin -Ester Perel (relationships and counselling but really interesting and has been helpful)
The rest is history (all the history I feel like I should know but don't),
Where there's a will there's a way (Kathy Burke and a guest, usually funny and interesting)

Running won't save you (running/ ultra running / alcohol related)

CurlsLDN · 07/01/2025 18:02

The Apple Podcasts app is free.
I use that to listen to my podcasts, and Spotify for 10year old ds.
he likes to listen to science and stories as he falls asleep, and keeping my own subscriptions on a seperate app means it doesn’t auto play the latest ‘my dad wrote a…’ to him!

MistyMountainTop · 07/01/2025 18:20

I use the Podcast Addicts app, all except the BBC ones are on there, well all the ones that I've wanted to find!

NeonGiraffe · 07/01/2025 18:23

I use the Apple Podcasts app, it's free. If you like crime you could start with the ones that became huge hits: Serial, season 1, utterly gripping, also Sweet Bobby.

Words · 07/01/2025 18:38

How do you scroll bbc sounds though?
I find I need to know what I want to listen to, and search for that.
The stuff presented on the screen is generally not for me.

iamnotalemon · 07/01/2025 18:41

I love parenting hell. So funny.
