Constantly cold - anyone else and what could it be?

I have always felt the cold but I think it’s became worse in recent years. I am 50 and in good health and pretty fit but: I am probably on the skinny side, possibly low iron and I do have low blood pressure. Could it be any of those?

Currently in a room that is 18.5 Degrees, wearing a big jumper and fleecy joggers and still feeling a bit cold.

Same age. Same size. Would be bloody freezing at 18.5!!! 23 degrees for me please

Newmeagain · 05/01/2025 21:50

@Ndd1356387 I think I am possibly comparing myself to all the people on mumsnet who claim to be boiling hot when their house is 16 degrees and they are wearing a vest top…

Have you had your thyroid checked?

Winter?

It has been seriously cold the past few days and even if your thermostat is set at a fairly low 18.5 it doesn't mean that the whole room is that temperature. Obviously nothing wrong with getting a checkup if you think there is something else going on but I have at least two layers on each part of me and often have a blanket too.

Definitely don't do that - I mean don't compare yourself to those people.

I'm always cold in winter. BP on the low side but nothing drastic. Nothing wrong with me, I just feel the cold a lot more than some.

Needanewname42 · 05/01/2025 22:31

18.5deg isn't particularly warm for just sitting around watching TV.
Women generally feel colder than men. Who sets the heating? And who else lives in the house?

LouisvilleSlugger · 05/01/2025 22:32

Me too. Always cold. Always have been. 52 and perimenopausal and I’ve yet to be remotely warm, let alone hot.

Nothing wrong with me, just cold. Ironically, I have to sleep naked and with a least one window open. Being warm in bed makes me nauseous.

Mandarinaduck · 05/01/2025 22:33

18.5 is cold unless you are doing something pretty active like housework or exercise. I have my heating set at 20 but even then I am a bit cold if just sitting still.

Dodie66 · 05/01/2025 22:33

I’d never feel warm atthat temperature. Needs to be 21 - 22 and even then wear a big jumper
i looked at recommendations online and it’s says 18 for bedrooms and 20 for living room

DelilahBucket · 05/01/2025 22:33

Our room is 19 degrees currently and I'm still under a blanket with a hot water bottle. You're not unusual for feeling cold under the circumstances.

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 05/01/2025 22:34

It's winter. It's cold. It's not really a mystery.

18.5 is low recommended comfortable indoor temp for being sedentary is 20-22

CruCru · 05/01/2025 23:11

Are you tired? I always feel cold when I’m not getting enough sleep.

Thecatspjymas · 05/01/2025 23:12

I would suggest checking your thyroid

CorsicaDreaming · 05/01/2025 23:31

18.5 isn't warm enough for sitting in for any period of time. I don't think it's surprising you feel cold at that temperature unless you are being constantly active. If just sitting about, then 21C is needed as you're not making much warmth from muscular activity.
Or wear a heated blanket as others mention.

The other thing to check is the humidity of the air inside your house. We bought a condensing dehumidifier and it is a game changer for making rooms feel warmer if the air is at all damp (which even just normal cooking and breathing can cause, add in closed windows as it's winter and it's v common). But ensure you buy condensing rather than a dessicant style dehumidifier to get the most warmth benefit.

Middlemarch123 · 05/01/2025 23:44

Yes to the suggestion of a heated throw up thread!
Made such a difference for me. Means that I can be toasty and partner and ds comfortable and not sweltering in a house that was too warm for them but chilly for me.
Best thing I ever bought last year. Love it. Get one OP, you won’t regret it.

NoBodyIdRatherBe · 05/01/2025 23:45

Have you lost weight?

DrFoxtrot · 05/01/2025 23:53

It's more than likely because it's very cold at the moment and 18.5C is not warm if you're sitting down, as PP said.

It's similar to when people (patients coming to see me) complain that they're sweating during a heatwave. I check the usual things like thyroid bloods etc, but 99% of the time, it's the weather.

I second this link! We have 6 of the Alaskan husky heated throws in our family now-everyone who tries it buys it! Absolutely amazing and only pence to run per hour. I've kept my heating on about 18 degrees since I bought my first one 18 months ago. Before that it had to be 21/22 for sitting around. I am also always cold and have an underactive thyroid.

Thecatspjymas · 05/01/2025 23:12

I would suggest checking your thyroid

Or put your thermostat up to a decent temperature. I would recommend 22 in this weather.

Newmeagain · 06/01/2025 08:49

Thanks all - I will turn up the heating!!!

years ago I used to have it at around 22 but I guess with price rises I have been trying to be economical - but I can afford to turn it up so will do so.

Totaleclipseofthemind · 06/01/2025 08:55

18 degrees! That’s is too low if you are not in bed or sitting around. 21 is the lowest for us and in this cold weather it is higher.

Get thyroid checked if you have not already.

cardibach · 06/01/2025 09:00

I have my heating at 18 but I wear a thermal base layer, joggers, an oodie and cover my legs with a fleece blanket! I'm over weight (less so than I was) and have a treated under active thyroid. I have a heated throw I need if the temp drops lower than that or if I've been outside and got cold. As others say, 20 is the bottom of the 'comfortable sitting about' temperatures unless you layer up a lot.
I mostly don't believe the 'sweating at 16' lot, but if they are telling the truth they also aren't saying their thermostat is in a cold place like the hall, so likely living spaces are several degrees higher than the thermostat says.

KnittedCardi · 06/01/2025 09:10

Heating set at 20, but I have on jeans, a base layer polo neck, cashmere sweater, socks and slippers, and a woollen throw. Nothing wrong with you, you just need more clothes, and a higher heating temp!
