How to while away time on a plane?

Worried1305 · 05/01/2025 12:16

I have to do a long flight soon (12 hours followed by 9 hours, with one short stopover). Please let me know your best plane activities! Preferably original ideas, not just “sleep” (which I will try to do but unsure if I will succeed).

I download easy to listen to podcasts. They while away the time but you can also fall asleep to them.

TotallyTwisted · 05/01/2025 12:18

Just take a couple of books to read, I don't know why this is even a question. Confused

Read a book!

Watch films, read books, sleep, take a crossword book, eat and drink. I love being on a long haul flight.

Nevertoocoldforicecream · 05/01/2025 12:32

I like audiobooks, real books, a new Puzzler or similar (Murdle is a bit different), paper to write or draw on, loads of snacks as I really dislike the food.

Paperback novels & Sudoku puzzles. Spare pens. Assume there will be no chargepoint if you decide to be phone dependent so then you'd need several fully charged powerbanks too.

Yes, this is a deeply weird question!

Read. Or watch a film.

Carriemac · 05/01/2025 13:07

Download the free Timeshifter app , input your flight times and date and it will tell you when to sleep, wake up eat and caffeinate so as to minimise jet lag and have a relaxing flight

I read. Occasionally watch a film but generally prefer to read.

orangewasp · 05/01/2025 13:19

Clear out my Gmail and Hotmail inboxes.
Also read, and do crosswords.
Daydream.

It's not a 'deeply weird' question.

She's just asking for tips. Those are long flights and there's only so many hours films and books can be interesting for.

OP - I just take a range of things to do so I go between things: cross stitch, Nintendo DS, read a book (I usually take 2 in case one is boring), magazine, soduku book, plenty of snacks. I also take toothbrush, hand cream, face cream etc so I do a bit of a 'self care' (hate that term) too. Notebook so I can make a plan for the trip. I sometimes write a letter to an older relative or friend as people never get letters anymore.

Oh yes, that reminds me that I tend to do lots of photo deleting on my phone and look at old photos too and put things into folders.

Cynic17 · 05/01/2025 13:22

Just take a Kindle and read. No danger of running out of books during the flight!

StressedQueen · 05/01/2025 13:23

I love long flights so much. I do pretty basic things but they are my favourite - watch films, read books, listen to music, listen to podcasts, do Sudoku and word puzzles. It's a combo of all of that really!

LouisvilleSlugger · 05/01/2025 13:24

I’m a bit tragic in that I advance look up what films are on the flight so I can decide what to watch. My husband downloads films he wants to watch on his iPad. I make sure I’ve got a good book ready on my kindle. I also drink enough alcohol that means I will sleep for a couple of hours after the main meal service - a glass of fizz then wine with the meal.

The main thing I do is to watch films. I don't go to the cinema very often so like catching up on films that I've missed. I can often fit in 3 on a long haul flight.

Now that you can pay for WiFi on most flights, I do that for long haul (it seems a waste of money for shorthaul). I'm learning Spanish so get some practice in on Duolingo.

As others have said, I also read, do crossword puzzles and catch up on emails. I make sure that I have a load of podcasts downloaded to my phone plus a couple of audiobooks.
I take one physical book plus my kindle.

I also download a box set onto my tablet just in case I don't like the films on offer.

I never manage to sleep on a plane but there's always plenty to keep me occupied.

I don't know why it hasn't occurred to you that not everyone likes reading books? Confused

You sound like you know the OP personally.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 05/01/2025 13:37

Was going to say the time shifter app, but I see someone has beat me to it. I normally get very antsy on a long flight and can never sleep. But while the app didn’t really make me sleep, the advice about caffeine, when to try and sleep, avoid screens etc. really helped. I took a sleep mask and neck pillow too, so during the sleep time I rested and was comfortable. The flight did not feel anywhere as long or drawn out as normal.

Apart from that, have a couple of books, podcasts or music downloaded, and a tablet with films/tv shows.

NorthernGirlie · 05/01/2025 13:39

I downlaod a few films, audio books and podcasts.

I read, crochet, watch a film, eat and drink, maybe wifi-free games/puzzles on my iPad.

Or they aren't able to understand that some people want more variety than just reading.

BertieBotts · 05/01/2025 13:44

Podcasts, books, TV/films, take a laptop and load a really addictive game you can play offline like civilisation, sims, rimworld, theme hospital etc.
