I'm sure a couple of folk were arrested but I've never heard anything about it since!

I’m sure they did get to court and prosecuted

TobiasForgesContactLense · 04/01/2025 23:03

Trial delayed last month:

Googled it for you (and me tbh 😁)

Oh so the trial is meant to be next week! I wonder if the guy will still be "too unwell" to attend 🤔

They’re on trial this week. Trial is expected to last 10 days. I hope they go to jail.

martha4clark · 30/04/2025 15:13

I am genuinely baffled why the two accused are pleading not guilty. There’s video of it happening recorded on one of their phones!! Open and shut case guv, surely??

TonTonMacoute · 30/04/2025 15:18

I am at a complete loss why anyone would do this. It's the very definition of mindless vandalism.

The evidence against them seems so strong I agree, I don't understand why they didn't plead guilty. The sentence will be worse if they are found guilty now. Mind you, they don't look like the sharpest knives in the drawer.

HugelyExpensiveCrystalDuck · 30/04/2025 15:28

So it seems they did it for the thrill and infamy.

I also can’t understand why they are pleading not guilty. Yesterday the claim was made that the phone must have been stolen, along with the vehicle that was clocked on camera at the right times during the night. Then the phone thief texted the girlfriend of the person who he stole the phone from. Confused

CigarettesAndLoveBites · 30/04/2025 16:17

They're arrogant pricks, that's why. It's why they did it and it's why they are pleading not guilty.

Not only that - the two of them are just too fucking stupid to realise that the evidence is completely stacked against them.

100PercentFaithful · 30/04/2025 16:24

They are not admitting it because they are enjoying the game.
They did it as they knew it would upset a lot of people, similar to those who graffiti or damage public buildings. These people are often poorly educated, on a low income and dissatisfied with how life has treated them. They want to make others upset as it makes them feel good in some way: ‘sticking it to the man’.
I don’t think they will serve time in prison for cutting down a tree. A fine or public service is more likely.

B1indEye · 30/04/2025 16:28

Well obviously they are pleading not guilty in the hopes that the jury is made of brain dead idiots like themselves in the hope someone believes them and their moronic defence

I'm sure they'll be found guilty but it's possibly difficult to sentence as it's a unique crime

Hopefully at the very least they'll lose their livelihoods

The court case is on going. I am very interested to learn why they did it.

Same. It's almost unfarhomable really. Such a strange act of 'vandalism' when you actually live in the area.

I had a sycamore in my garden and my neighbour hugged me when I had it removed because they're such an invasive (and non-native) pest, but I don't think it's that.

Yes and in a photograph, why was one of them holding two owls?

DoctorMarten · 30/04/2025 16:39

I remember when I happened people were saying it was 16 year olds. But no, two grown ass men behaving like utter morons. I hope they go to jail.

I know, the original thread on here was bonkers with people thinking a school age child was responsible

B1indEye · 30/04/2025 17:33

No threads from the time are coming up for me in a search, can anyone else find them?

Maybe deleted or in a short time topic

GeorgianaM · 30/04/2025 17:36

I can't get my head around that it wasn't a drunken escapade and on the spur of the moment, which would have been bad enough but the two accused are working men with families/children and they sat down and planned it and then drove for forty minutes before felling the tree.

The tree had no impact on their lives and there was no glory to be had from doing it.

It beggars belief that they thought they could get away with it after carelessly texting others.

Were they expecting anyone to say well done, because I can't think of anyone other than these two who would think cutting down a 150 year old tree in a beauty spot was anything g but downright diabolical.

gattocattivo · 30/04/2025 17:54

Pair of pricks.

groovylady · 30/04/2025 17:59

The national trust has a lot of money and good lawyers.
They are morons.

They also had the skills to do a prpfessioanl job, which I think somehow makes it even odder? It wasn't just "fun" to cut down a tree, they've done that many times before.
