Turkey: to eat or not to eat after 9 days?

TobleroneWrestling · 04/01/2025 12:37

Is it safe to eat a turkey, cooked on Boxing Day, allowed to cool and then kept in a cold fridge since? It looks and smells fine but it is almost 9 days since it was cooked. It seems a shame to waste it if it is safe to eat.

I know some people would eat it without considering it an issue and some people would run screaming for the hills rather than eat it!

But can anyone tell me please if it is safe to eat from an actual food safety knowledge point of view?

No. Should have frozen it. 3 days max in the fridge for open cooked meat.

foxandbee · 04/01/2025 12:39

No chance would I eat that, are you serious?!

BreakfastClubBlues · 04/01/2025 12:39

Me personally no, but DH most likely would if it looks/ smells fine.

Depends how brave you are!

Hell no!

DragonFly98 · 04/01/2025 12:40

Absolutely not should have thrown it away by the 30th at the latest.

TobleroneWrestling · 04/01/2025 12:41

I should have added that it has been covered in tin foil.

God no, and I say that as a woman with a gut of steel! 😁

olympicsrock · 04/01/2025 12:42

No definitely not ok

OfMiceandWomen · 04/01/2025 12:42

No I wouldn’t risk it

Still no.
I don’t think anyone assume it was sitting around uncovered.

WhatWillYouHaveTallulah · 04/01/2025 12:44

Personally, I wouldn't chance it, but having said that, I would also add that I would have had to hide it from DH who wouldn't hesitate to eat it.
Usually he can get away with that too, his gut must be so used to him chancing it!

Where the hell do you get your turkeys from!? Are they made of iron? It should be honking by now.

4catsaremylife · 04/01/2025 12:45

I did some food microbiology modules at university and second Hell No

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 04/01/2025 12:46

😂
I don't think the tin foil is going to protect it from 9 days of festering.
Just throw it in the bin

TwattyMcFuckFace · 04/01/2025 12:46

Keep it in the fridge any longer, and the turkey may start running around again with all that bacteria 🦃

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 04/01/2025 12:47

Doesn't your fridge smell awful?! Loosely covered cooked meat is going to be pretty whiffy after several days, surely.

CarolinaWren · 04/01/2025 12:49

No. Freezer leftovers if you aren't going to eat them in 2-3 days.

Waitrose, of course! It was free range too and not cheap. No honking at all, that's geese.

God no. 3 days max without freezing.

Annoyingsquirrels · 04/01/2025 12:55

I ate some at 7 days and it was fine. I think the usual recomendation is 3 to 4 days though so it is a gamble.

Notimeforaname · 04/01/2025 12:56

No. It should have gone in the freezer.

gingercat02 · 04/01/2025 12:56

I threw ours away on Thursday (cooked Christmas day) as it stank. There wasn't much, but I was cross it got missed when I froze everything else!

OfMiceandWomen · 04/01/2025 12:57

Is there a reason why you didn’t eat it or freeze after a couple a days

wandawaves · 04/01/2025 12:57

Jesus, no. You can't be serious.
