Turkey: to eat or not to eat after 9 days?

Is it safe to eat a turkey, cooked on Boxing Day, allowed to cool and then kept in a cold fridge since? It looks and smells fine but it is almost 9 days since it was cooked. It seems a shame to waste it if it is safe to eat.

I know some people would eat it without considering it an issue and some people would run screaming for the hills rather than eat it!

But can anyone tell me please if it is safe to eat from an actual food safety knowledge point of view?

Yes, I'm slightly disappointed too @IWantToBeADCC but I do think it's for the best. I couldn't have forgiven myself if I had caused serious illness.

Anyway, if we'd eaten the turkey then it wouldn't still be available for you to drop from a great height on to your H's head or to leave on the pillow next to him, now would it? Assuming that you really don't deserve it, I don't like the idea of you being sent to Coventry for a week and being so stressed that you can't eat apart from a bit of fruit. I've no wish to pry or to give unsolicited advice but do take good care of yourself - and only you know if it's time to consider getting your turkeys in a row.Flowers

NB Readers - no Hs were actually harmed during the making of this post.

😂 don’t be giving me ideas now! I’ll pop round for it! Put something heavy inside to replace the giblets.

I’m getting kind of used to the silence and sleeping downstairs is nothing new for me so hey ho. He said he’s sick of me so we’ll see what the New Year brings.

3 days in the fridge is long enough. I wouldn't risk the heath of me or my children to save a few quid, but to each their own

It would have been perfectly fine to eat, I've eaten meat and poultry cooked 3 days previously for decades and given it to my children and grandchild without a qualm, and I'm careful about food hygiene.
But as you say, each to their own, just seems such a waste.

Good god no I wouldn't even put it out for foxes it's far too long to even consider anything other than the bin
Chuck it away ,next time portion and freeze to use another day

Jesus christ there are some truly disgusting people in this thread.

It's a fruitcake! It lasts forever, and when it's been fed brandy, it's practically
indestructible and will taste good for at least 10-20 years. Nothing disgusting about it whatsoever. In fact, traditionally the top tier of a wedding cake is put away for the christening of the first child.

But I would draw the line at a piece of Queen Victoria's cake!

I suspect you deserve better than that though, @IWantToBeADCC . The point is are you sick of him and what do you want the New Year to bring? Wishing you all the very best.

Fear not, the turkey is already pretty solid. Must be all that running around in the fresh air it once did. Either that or we go back to Plan A and feed it to him. It's day 11 now.Wink

I would like to try a piece of that cake @CleansUpButWouldPreferNotTo as long as I wasn't driving!

It's very much like our tradition here in the UK to have extra tiers made to your wedding cake to save to serve at future Christenings. That would usually be an iced boozy fruit cake, very much like Christmas cake.

Exactly - I'm British, and when I got married I posted out slices of our traditional fruit cake with brandy covered in Royal icing wedding cake to overseas friends and family who couldn't attend the wedding. Before the poster who thinks I'm disgusting has another go at me, I can tell you it's such a British tradition that I was able to buy special wedding cake postal boxes, selecting from a range of cake posting boxes.

As there was no possibility of children, the top tier was put away and was brought out and eaten on our tenth wedding anniversary. It was delicious..

Cake slices posted out in boxes and tiers were saved here too. Belated congratulations on your wedding anniversary @CleansUpButWouldPreferNotTo Cake

Thank you @TobleroneWrestling . On occasion I have received wedding cake in the post and it's always a thrill. Wouldn't work with the modern trend to have sponge cake, of course.

CrowleyKitten · 07/01/2025 20:43

a well fed, well aged fruit cake is a thing of beauty.
