Recently had two instances of my local hospital working weekends, I had a echocardiogram on the Saturday before Christmas & Dh has a phone appointment on Sunday explaining a procedure he is having in a couple of weeks, so maybe an example of trying to work through some of the backlog.
my GP no longer takes phone calls for appointments you have to have an app & fill out what the issue is, they then either text or send through invitation for an appointment it works fairly well but if the quota for consultations is full you have to wait until the next day, I can navigate it reasonably well not sure what the protocol is for those who can’t or don’t have a smart phone.

I had cancer 10 years ago and remember going for a CT scan on a Saturday. My local hospital had an excellent oncology department, hopefully still does. Maybe my hospital was just efficient and if they started getting a backlog they opened up at the weekends for appointments.

Starmer taking no prisoners here:

^^
I’m very concerned about where the Tory party is going on this, in this country …
^^
I think only a few months ago it would have been unthinkable for things to be said about Jess Phillips that were said recently [Musk calling her a “rape genocide apologist”] without all political parties, and the leader of the opposition, calling it out in terms.
^^
I genuinely believe that. I don’t think it was that long ago that you would have all expected that reaction. You’d have all been challenging the leader of the opposition, ‘Will you denounce this? This isn’t fair, because it’s put a member of parliament, my member of parliament, at risk.’
^^
That’s not good. That’s why I say a line’s been crossed.
^^
So this isn’t about America or Musk. I’m talking about our politics. I’m talking about the responsibility that our politicians have in calling this out for what it is, and distancing themselves and condemning it.

Because if you’re not stand prepared to stand up as a Tory MP and denounce what’s been said about Jess Phillips, who’s now had threats made to her, then you need to seriously consider while you’re in politics in the first place.

It was a very good speech. Needed to be done.

(Sorry for the long link)

This is a superb piece of writing and analysis by Stephen Bush in which he takes apart Tory opportunism and pandering to Elon Musk over the grooming gangs and compares it to Farage’s consistent red line on Tommy Robinson.

That FT article has just come in very useful on the shit scared about the future in the UK, which has popped up again.

You're doing good work, but unfortunately you're outnumbered by the usual squad of people we are not allowed to describe as racist and thick.

littledrummergirls · 06/01/2025 14:06

Or bots, or suggest they may not be posting in good faith or live in this country.

Coming off it now, as I don't want to waste too much time! But I really thought the FT article was an asset to the thread.

The most belligerent and prolific poster won’t even read it. They’re not interested in anything that doesn’t fit their agenda. You’re braver than me.

I must admit I did pretty much tiptoe in and tiptoe out. I don't want to get into an exchange with them.

I read an article at lunchtime whilst having my lunch on Starmers speech.

I was very impressed.

He was calm, pointed out facts and made an excellent point to close it.

Love that he pointed out JP has done more than any of them for VAWAG

itsgettingweird · 06/01/2025 16:04

That indeed is an excellent article Duncin

Very clear and concise pointing out a lot of basic facts against questions asked.

I think he was great in his response.

On the NHS topic - today I got a letter for a gynae referral , only one working day after seeing (I thought useless at the time!) GP and it's in March (I previously waited over a year for a consultant). It's at a local private hospital. I had the same pretty rapid outcome for gallbladder so these improvements are already in the system. I didn't even ask for this gynae one to be fasttracked.

As you mostly know, I had my gallbladder done and dusted in September 24 and noticed when putting my March appt in my calendar that my original NHS initial hospital appointment was due 3 April!

itsgettingweird · 06/01/2025 16:57

That's positive piggy I was referred to neuro last September and was told over a year. My appointment is May!

When I was referred to gynae urgently they refused the referral as urgent. I spoke to my GP who very politely pointed out they referred urgently because they know the patient and it's not routine. Got apt within a few months, biopsy a few months later and results after that. Then had hysterectomy 6 months after referral for it. I do think nhs is still a postcode lottery

Elodie09 · 06/01/2025 16:58

@PandoraSox Thank you for posting our PM's statement.
He is a very, very strong leader and should never be underestimated.
I am disgusted by the lack of media support for Jess Phillips and the silence from many MP's regarding this vile verbal attack. They should be outraged.
Shameful.

prettybird · 06/01/2025 17:10

I rang my surgery for a telephone appointment with my GP last Monday (it's just a prescription review after a year on the medication) and I'm getting my call from him on Wednesday (with two bank holidays in between time as we're in Scotland Wink), so I can't complain about access to my GP Smile

Think if I'd been less fussy about who I had the appointment with, I could have had it sooner.

I never feel rushed either him and if he feels it's necessary to see you, an in-person appointment is arranged quickly.
