People who walk in the road to get around you

Bit of an odd question but I’m curious what others do in this situation…
narrow path, singe buggy, move over for oncoming pedestrian who steps into the road unnecessarily. Then shouts ‘ thanks for forcing me into traffic you selfish b*tch.’
So in this case are you supposed to thank someone for walking in the road to avoid passing you on the path despite there being space to?
Obviously if the path was taken up by say a double buggy you’d thank them/apologise for them not being able to walk past, but in this case it was a dramatic action on their behalf surely?
Ive had plenty of people walk in the road to get around me if they’re in a rush or whatever (I live in a very busy town) and I’ve done it before without my children in tow, I’ve never expected a thank you for it because they’re being convenient for themselves not doing a favour for the person ‘in the way’.
stepping aside for someone or waiting until they pass if the path is narrow of course warrants a thank you but this is specifically about people walking around by using the road.
So was the comment fair or was he just an idiot!?

She’s clearly one of those people who walks at everyone and expects them to move for her/stands in the middle of a supermarket aisle to chat and get in everyone’s way 🤣

Thanks for proving my point so well! You’re welcome.

Maybe there wasn't enough room for him from his pov, maybe you didn't move aside quickly enough for him to think you were willing share the path?
You should have said thank you anyway and he shouldn't have been aggressive.

I would step into the side of the road to let someone past with a buggy. I wouldn't expect them to say thank you either - what else are they supposed to do - levitate? The OP did nothing wrong. Shouty guy was clearly having a bad day.
Seriously, some of you people will start an argument in an empty room.

MyNavyPombear · 03/01/2025 21:16

Well the other option would be for you to go into the road or the roadside, with a young child and a buggy?! No this arsehole was being unreasonable, and super rude.

SirChenjins · 03/01/2025 21:18

Maybe she didn’t think she needed to thank someone who was being overly dramatic by walking onto the road when there was enough space on the pavement for him and who then proceeded to swear at her. I wouldn’t have done either.

Or if there really wasn’t enough space on the pavement for him then maybe he could have waited a few seconds while the OP pressed herself and her buggy right into the side to allow his unimpeded progression along the pavement. Of course, that would have spoiled his moment of drama and taken away his chance to swear at a woman so I don’t imagine he’d have gone for that option.

BrokenFamilyTies · 03/01/2025 21:27

The OP has proven herself to be a hypocrite on this thread - I don’t believe there was enough room for him to pass without stepping into the road. She said the pavement was narrow - did she have a slimline buggy - no I don’t think so either.

Only one rude pass agg here and it wasn’t the guy in the road.

Oh bore off, you’re literally just making up stories about something that no normal person would think twice about, let alone shout and swear at a stranger over.

No she hasn’t. HTH calms your over-active imagination.

Or post a thread on Mumsnet about?

So many mannerless people about.

SirChenjins · 03/01/2025 21:36

Yeah, they’re the ones swearing at people on pavements.

Bully girls out in force tonight - nothing on Tv?

SirChenjins · 03/01/2025 21:38

I don’t know what you like to watch on TV.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/01/2025 21:39

There's an astonishing number of people on this thread who seem unable to read and understand a perfectly clear post.

You'd moved aside, obviously the normal response would have been for the man to walk by on the pavement and thanked you OP.

And even if this guy had a different perception of how much space he needed, claiming you'd 'forced' him into the traffic and calling you a selfish bitch was way out of line.

Far more normal to post a thread on Mumsnet puzzling over why a stranger would shout and swear at her over nothing than it is to go to to the extent of making up scenarios in order to defend said shouty stranger.

The simple fact is that sometimes people who lack emotional self-awareness will take out their pent-up anger on people who have done nothing to deserve such an outburst.

Nothing more complicated to it than that.

BrokenFamilyTies · 03/01/2025 21:40

We don’t actually know what happened we only have OP’s word.
however, normal people don’t swear at women with buggies without provocation.
OP has proved herself to be provocative here. So I’ll stick to my boring points. Thank you.

blackandwhitefur · 03/01/2025 21:41

The comment was totally unnecessary but I would say thank you or an acknowledgment to anyone who walked on the road to let me pass.

SirChenjins · 03/01/2025 21:41

@BrokenFamilyTies Again - no she hasn’t. You’re simply making nonsense up to fit your (weak) narrative.

He didn’t ‘let’ her pass - she has explained what happened .

I've been a bit baffled by some of the responses. OP says there was enough room on the pavement. I'm quite surprised so many posters are coming up with made-up scenarios.

I wouldn't thank someone who walked in the road for no apparent reason, either. There is space on the pavement. It's up to you if you decide to play chicken.

You have been far more provocative than the OP and it’s very weird that you’re taking the side of a man for shouting and swearing at a mum taking her child for a walk.

If you are going to assume that people can’t be taken as honest in their posts, there seems to be little point responding to threads.

worcesterpear · 03/01/2025 21:55

As op moved aside, of course she is not bu. What else was she expected to do, take her buggy into the road when there was enough room anyway? What used to annoy me was when on a path where it is obvious that someone will have to give way, the other person seems oblivious. I got fed up of always being the one to step onto the road etc, so started stopping and standing still once they were in close proximity, which seemed to irrationally annoy some people, especially men of a certain age.

The other annoying thing was during covid, when I would encounter people jumping into bushes in order to avoid me, then feeling obliged to thank them.

They're reasonable considerations if you yourself are disabled or visually impaired in some way, many able bodied people don't consider any other pov than their own privileged one.
I've been very close to sticking my fingers up at someone ( the 3rd person in 15 mins ) when I've had to put my son in the busy road because people have been parked on pavements.

A little consideration goes a long way.
