How often do you clean your home and what do you do?

Random question but I'm curious to know. I am quite lazy but my downstairs is usually ok upstairs however is a different story. My bathroom doesn't get cleaned as often as it should and most times I'd be embarrassed if someone asked to use my upstairs bathroom.

What is your cleaning routine and what bits do you never neglect ? How often do you do some sort of cleaning?

I just find it difficult to have a pristine home and work full time when you're juggling all the kids after school stuff too. I admit it must be doable as other seem to manage but what's the secret? Do you make time to clean even if you're exhausted or it's really late? What's the magic formula for clean houses as a busy mum?

It is pretty hard without a cleaner. I work 4 days so on a Friday i dust and hoover house and do bathrooms. Might do a little hoover another day if particularly messy but no pets and kids are a bit older,
Wiping sides in kitchen etc gets done every day,

clinkclankclop · 02/01/2025 15:00

Yes I agree for anyone that has a cleaner it must be a game changer. As I say my downstairs is usually always in good shape and we have no pets so no smells or hairs . I clean as I go but it's my upstairs. The hoovering of the bedrooms is a taboo subject and putting ironing/ socks away. I just find it very overwhelming plus my hubby isn't naturally tidy either so that's a problem

Daily:
Kitchen surfaces
Load of laundry
Hob (if used)
Bins emptied

Weekly:
Dusting
Hoovering
Bathroom
Ironing

Every couple of weeks:
Change beds
Windows
Mop hard floors

Less often:
Oven
Microwave
Skirting boards
Radiators
Fronts of kitchen cupboards
Fridge

Disclaimer, I do have a cleaner who comes every 2 weeks for 2 hours. But I do it the weeks in between she doesn't come.

Paradoes · 02/01/2025 15:01

I clean daily (I do one big job a day eg pull out sofas or wipe out fridge or wash door mats or shine a mirror)

one load of washing a day

bed sheets - strip on a Friday and have fresh for weekend - sometimes if busy every other Friday

it doesn’t take long at all because I do it so often

I hoover each day and mop main areas

clinkclankclop · 02/01/2025 15:02

@Paradoes see you're fantastic! Do you work and is so is it full time or part time? I think I'm just lazy but gonna make more of an effort

I clean through everyday, so our home is always neat and tidy. But I don't have any pets or young children, so this really helps. I'm more of a 'do it straightaway type person', so any circulars through the door go straight into the recycling bin, clothes are ironed and put away as soon as they are dry. Coats are kept in bedroom wardrobes, dishwasher is unloaded straightaway. Last thing at night, I wipe down kitchen surfaces and clean and polish the sink. It takes moments and I do like coming downstairs to a clean and shiny kitchen every morning.

Upstartled · 02/01/2025 15:04

I mean, every day I clean some of it. The kitchen is cleaned a few times a day. Hoover goes around most days of the week, although not all of it in one go. Dust a couple of times a week. Toilets each day, bathroom a few times a week. Skirting and windows once or twice a month.

converseandjeans · 02/01/2025 15:05

Every day - vacuum & tidy away, load dishwasher, wipe down sinks & surfaces in kitchen & bathroom, take out recycling
Every few days - empty bins, couple of loads of washing
Every weekend - clean bathroom, mop floors, change beds, more washing
Every few weeks - wash sofa covers & cushions

We have a dog so can’t get away without daily vacuum.

Both teach so work long days but if we leave it house gets really cluttered & messy.

Anotheremmaemma · 02/01/2025 15:06

I try to spend 30 minutes a week for each room.

Living room/dining room I would damp dust and polish, vacuum everywhere including under furniture, wipe leather sofas, clean glass, mop wood floors, vacuum the skirting boards.

Kitchen, clean toaster tray, clean hob, wipe fridge and knife and fork tray, clean sink and draining board, wipe cupboard fronts and mop.

Hallway, vacuum skirtings, vacuum stairs, damp dust surfaces, mop floors.

Bedrooms, change bedding fortnightly, vacuum everywhere, dust, clean mirrors, tidy and clutter.

Bathroom, change towels and top up toilet roll, clean toilet, shower bath and sink, wipe tiles, clean shower screen, clean out cabinet and toothbrush holder, mop floors.

WellsAndThistles · 02/01/2025 15:08

I'm never show home tidy. Whole house gets hoovered probably twice a week.

Bathroom, a quick swish round on mucky bits everyday (toothpaste splatters in sink, after showering etc). Proper elbow deep clean about once a week.

Kitchen - quick wipe round after food prep, hardly ever get round to mopping the floor but it doesn't seem to get grubby.

Windows- Live in a flat so this is nightmare, probably annual event as I'm terrified of going arse over tit out the window.

General - try to stop clutter building up and keep on top of putting things away tidy.

TENSsion · 02/01/2025 15:09

Every day:

Beds are made.
A load or two of laundry is washed, dried and put away.
Kitchen sides are wiped down.
Top of hob cleaned
Floor under dining table is swept.
Dishwasher emptied.
before I go to bed, I boil the kettle and bleach the wash cloth with boiling water.
Bins, recycling and compost taken out every evening

Twice a week:

Downstairs toilet is cleaned.
Whole house is hoovered.

Once a week:

All bedding changed
All towels washed
Both bathrooms cleaned
Fridge cleared and deep cleaned

Once a month:
Windows cleaned
Oven cleaned
Washing machine and dishwasher cleaned

Less than once a month:
Cushion and sofa covers taken off and washed
walls wiped down

Give yourself an hour every night and get as much done as you can in that time. You’ll be surprised at the difference it’ll make.

Goldenbear · 02/01/2025 15:09

I clean the bathroom everyday as it is tiny and I don't like a big clean of it plus it is the easiest room with no clutter. The rest of the house kitchen as and when i.e dishwasher surfaces, floors. The hoovering once a week, the dusting downstairs is on average once a week but upstairs teenage rooms not as regularly as down to them mostly but sometimes I just do it. I have loads of laundry probably 2 loads a day but can be left when working for 3 days and then awful.backlog! Hate the laundry more than anything.

Exactly this, except we mop floors weekly and don’t have a cleaner. However, I also don’t have small children, which makes it easy. And DD and DH do their fair share.

I work full time - home by five as short commute and kids upper primary

my trick is batch cooking so I rarely cook during the week (dh is very clean I have to say)

HelpMeGetThrough · 02/01/2025 15:12

Hoover upstairs and downstairs, clean the bathroom and kitchen completely every day.

Need to completely clean the bathroom and kitchen as I'm immunocompromised, so it has to be spotless and disinfected.

This is pretty much the same as we do. Except...when we know visitors are coming...the house is blitzed!

TwattyMcFuckFace · 02/01/2025 15:12

I split the housework down the middle with my husband.

It helps that we're both quite tidy-ish and our DC are adults now.

What's the magic formula for clean houses as a busy mum?

Well it's not really a 'magic' formula but you make sure the busy dad does an equal amount.

And teach the kids to tidy after themselves. This bit is normally a work in progress, but it all helps.

OurDreamLife · 02/01/2025 15:18

I clean throughout the day but it’s little jobs here and there. I do like my home to look like a show home though but little and often means nothing is a big job.

WiseLurker · 02/01/2025 15:19

You said that your husband isn't tidy, and that will be why it seems so difficult.

It doesn't take long to clean a house which is already tidy, even a large house can be blitzed in a couple of hours.

Leave stuff everywhere so it's a mess before you even get started, well then it can take several.

The secret is routine and being super organised. It's also much easier to keep clean when it's already clean and tidy so maybe start with a huge declutter and organise.

I work full-time but my dp does (more than) his fair share.
I won't go to bed with the house a mess, everything gets reset at the end of the day, so dishwasher emptied, surfaces clean, laundry laid away at the bare minimum. It takes 10mins to run the hoover round if it needs it.

Get DC involved too, age appropriate tasks, mine don't do much but they're responsible for emptying school bags and lunch boxes, putting own laundry away, emptying bedroom bins, putting dishes in the dishwasher and keeping bedrooms tidy. The eldest empties the dishwasher (sometimes!) and the youngest will help gather and sort clean laundry and deliver to it bedrooms. It's not much but it helps keep things running. And I don't want to raise boys who don't understand what work goes on behind the scenes!

We have a cleaner two half days a week so little for us to do but when we didn’t DH and I divided the things between us. Not onerous when you do it together. Do you have a DH

babasaclover · 02/01/2025 15:27

Every time you leave a room take something with you to put away. Keeps on top of clutter.

Especially as you go up / downstairs

JBJ · 02/01/2025 15:30

Kitchen - cleaned as I go. Never go to bed on a sink full of pots or crumbs/food waste on the worktops/hob/sink. Dishwasher loaded at night and set to come on in the morning so I don't forget.

Bathroom - I clean the shower round whilst I'm in it, wipe the sink clean after I've cleaned my teeth, and chuck a bit of bleach down the loo as and when needed.

Hoovering tends to get done once a week, dusting when I notice it needs it (I'm a bit of a slattern with dust!), mop after I hoover (I've got one of those spray mops, so it dries really quickly),

Things like cleaning the fridge out/inside windows etc usually when I notice they could do with doing. I have no particular routine with these things!

I'm a clutter bug so find it harder to keep on top of random things that I abandon all over the house, but it's generally clean and I can tidy up remarkably quickly if I get warning that someone's on their way round 🤣
