Name someone we can google and learn about.

I pick Catherine Trotter Cockburn: she was an early woman writer who focussed on morality and philosophy too but also wrote some stories. The Adentures of a Young Lady (aka Olinda's Adventures) was published in 1693 as a teenager. Yet her legacy is underserved.

Can be anyone at all!

Ann Lovett

a girl from Longford (1984) Ireland who sadly died giving birth as she hid her pregnancy as a teenager. It caused national outrage and a change in Irish views towards their religion.

Great idea for a thread.

Nellie Crocker - militant suffragette, serial window breaker and all round badass.
This quote from her is still applicable:

"Modern Young Women seem unaware of the price paid for their political and social emancipation, and modern historians have great ignored the struggle."

I follow @TheAttagirls on Twitter/X and her "Woman of the Day" introduces me to so many amazing women that I would never otherwise have heard of.

I'll add Émilie du Châtelet. An impressive 18th century physicist she also wrote on philosophy and had some strong opinions on illusions. To be fair, she's not wrong and many of us live with some degree of illusions!

Thomas Thistlewood. A slave and plantation owner who documented everything, it's harrowing reading and I urge caution if you decide to read his writings. It's stark evidence of the brutality of the plantations.

Elizabeth Grey. A fossil collector who organised collections still seen in museums today. Her husband, obviously, got the credit for most of her work. She did a lot of work near where I live which is how I heard about her. There’s not a huge amount of info about her but I was delighted to tell my dinosaur loving daughters about her.

Oh I know of her! She was discussed in a documentary I watched as a teen. I presume the documentary was about Nazi Germany, I can't remember it well but I could picture Sophie Scholl's face as soon as I read your words. She clearly left an impression.

Charlotte Perriand. She studied under Le Corbusier, the man who, at her first interview to work with him, rejected her with, "We don't embroider cushions here".
She went on to develop Les Arcs ski resort, an incredible design that emphasised functionality and harmony with the natural environment, amongst other iconic designs of mid last century.
