Anyone else not bothering with NY celebrations?

I just can’t be arsed frankly!

We’ve had a really great Christmas and enough celebrating with family and friends and enough rich food! I just want to crack on getting the house straight and starting NY projects and for that reason I want an early night.

So dh and I will be retiring early and treating it as an ordinary evening. We usually just end up watching Jools Holland anyway! I’d rather just skip half heartedly doing something and make the most of tomorrow.

Anyone else?

I lost my husband on NYE some years ago. I never was a fan, but now I don’t celebrate or watch the awful forced merriment on television. It’s particularly difficult being in Scotland. Some people flatly refuse to accept that it’s not the most wonderful night of the year for everyone.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 31/12/2024 12:08

I have to be up for work at 6am and I don’t function on little sleep.

I celebrate new year at the end of October but I still enjoy the January ‘fresh start’ vibe.

January is also going to be a month for sorting out little bits in the house. I’ve already had a huge declutter.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/12/2024 12:15

Haven’t bothered for years, though we do see the NY in with a glass of fizz and watch the fireworks on TV.

After teens/early 20s I nearly always found NYE so over-hyped and consequently a bit of a let-down anyway. Not to mention so expensive if you want to go out.

Floralnomad · 31/12/2024 12:17

We’ve never really done NYE , we are big on Christmas . When I was a night staff nurse I always volunteered for NYE , including the millennium as it is just a normal day in our house .

So sorry to hear that. It must be desperately hard, especially in Scotland.

Do you have someone with you tonight?

Snowmanscarf · 31/12/2024 12:21

No, been poorly over the Christmas period and have no incentive to do anything special. I do feel a bit sorry for one of our dcs who’s been here - not been very exciting for them. Haven’t even got any special food in, or our usual takeaway.

Didntask · 31/12/2024 12:22

Nope. Nice dinner at home, couple of drinks, might stay up for the bells, but probably not.

FelixtheAardvark · 31/12/2024 12:43

Nope. We never bother.

MaryGreenhill · 31/12/2024 12:45

We don't bother with celebrating NYE now . We go to bed and watch the fireworks in London .
We used to go out and celebrate every year when we were younger but not since hitting 55 ISH .

Rocknrollstar · 31/12/2024 13:21

Friends coming for tea. That’s it. Just watched the fireworks live from Sydney (1.00pm here) so I’m ready for bed!

Letmeknowhowthatgoes · 31/12/2024 13:46

DH is a musician and has a gig tonight. This is par for the course on NYE so I usually have a quiet night in and go to bed before midnight.

This year we have our two GCs staying with us while their Mum has a few days away with friends so I have the joy of two bedtimes to look forward to!

Happy New Year everyone.

TwinkleLights24 · 31/12/2024 13:47

I don’t know anyone who does celebrate it. The stormy weather is awful so I can’t imagine anywhere will be busy.

DancingLions · 31/12/2024 13:57

Neither (adult) DD or I want to be up till midnight. A few years back we spent new year in Japan so now we celebrate at their midnight (our 3pm).

We put on a live stream of the Shibuya crossing (where everyone congregates for a countdown) and we have a cup of Sake and wish each other a Happy New Year! Then we'll have a nice dinner later and go to bed at a reasonable time. That way we still feel like we've "celebrated" in some way.

One thing I 100% wouldn't be doing is watching Jools Holland! An ex I had made me sit through that every NYE when we were together, and I never want to see it again!

AddictedToBooks · 31/12/2024 14:04

I've been to my daughter and my two younger brother's graves today to wish them well (I know that makes no sense really, but it felt important to me) and this evening I'm planning on having a quiet, cosy, warm night at home with my DH and dogs and then going to bed as normal - although I will nosy at the fireworks at midnight.

Nigellasrockyroad · 31/12/2024 14:09

I’m with you, OP.

I never do anything on NYE. i always have family staying for 3-5 days over Christmas and although it’s lovely, it’s also exhausting. I need a break! Usually in bed by 10pm, but always woken up by the dog barking at the fireworks.

NYD is different. Time for a new year with new goals. A nice meal. Some wine ( before dry January kicks in on the 2nd) and new enthusiasm. I love NYD!

Sheknowsaboutme · 31/12/2024 14:12

Nah im not bothered. No FOMO here. Im happy with my beer, chinese in my pj, on the sofa in my beautiful old cottage and a roaring fire and bed well before 12 and a clear head

if i miss out on something, no doubt it’ll be on Facebook tomorrow.

who fucking cares eh!!

Spudthespanner · 31/12/2024 14:19

God, it's the biggest night of the year here in Scotland. I've never been a fan and can count on one hand the years I've done anything for Hogmanay. Can't be arsed.

Loobyloo68 · 31/12/2024 14:28

Early bath, pj's on and a few drinks in front of the fire watching shit on tv until I'm drunk 😂

My sentiments exactly. I'm also Scottish.

DanceMumTaxi · 31/12/2024 14:43

No, I’ve never liked it tbh. We’re having a takeaway and will watch a film with the kids. Probably in bed before midnight. It’s not my new year anyway - that’s September.

I’m so sorry for your loss 🙏

Forgive my naivety but what’s the relevance of Scotland??

Hogmanay is quite a big deal in Scotland. A much bigger celebration than Christmas.

zingally · 31/12/2024 14:58

Haven't been out-out for NYE since I was a teenager!

It's the one night a year that I do stay up until midnight, watch the fireworks on the telly, and then go to bed.

No, but I’ll just be in bed early.

Judellie · 31/12/2024 14:59

We've been out for a lovely lunch as it's my birthday - tho bittersweet as my mum always came too and we lost her earlier this year (2024 was crap!)
I had planned to be in bed well before midnight but dd wants to go to her friend's NYE house party and wasn't quick enough to get a space to stay over (it's a family and friends party) so I said I'd go and pick her up around 12.30.
That's extremely late for me, got a headache just thinking about it!
