Convince me to get a kindle

I love to read and tried a kindle when they first came out many years ago but they weren’t for me, can’t really even remember why but just remember I much preferred a paper work. Are they worth it? What makes them so good? What type should I get? I don’t need a tablet for other things than just reading. Are books much cheaper on the kindle? I’d like to up my reading this year if I can. Thanks a million

I can read in bed without having to put the light on - I do most of my reading in bed
They are easier to hold - no having to hold a book open
They are lighter and easier to take travelling
You can adjust the brightness and font size

TBH I find reading a paper book more inconvenient these days.

Muddledbylifeadmin · 31/12/2024 09:30

I can't. I have one that hasn't been turned on or charged for several years now.

Are you open to negative answers?

In a good week, I can read a book in a couple of days. If I go on a trip, I only need take my kindle, not a pile of books.

First thing in the morning, my eyes are terrible. I can adjust the font.

I love mine.

GreyAreas · 31/12/2024 09:31

I read a lot of books where I want to take notes, on kindle I can highlight and export a page of quotes from the book.

Yes, I’m on the fence so need honesty before I spend a lot

Brilliant for camping or reading in the dark (get the one with a back light). Great for getting the funny to a comfortable size for reading. You can never lose your place! You can easily carry +++books with you so have lots of choice. 10000s of free books out there, although of varying quality.
If you have an Amazon Prime account, you can borrow books with their Prime Reading service.

stayathomer · 31/12/2024 09:33

I never thought I’d love it but my god I do! A library in your bag! I put the font up higher than the middle one and sit and flick away. It comes with me everywhere! Love that I can underline passages I like (I’m an blogger so make notes too)

Also handy at night as can read in the dark without a light (that’s my huge pro actually!!)

Cons obviously when you forget to charge (battery lasts days and days so easy to do!) , that you have to open a book before you leave somewhere with wifi or it won’t download and sometimes I just want the paperback experience! Also I don’t like the ones that are like a ipad in the screen as in have a really bright screen, happy with my paperwhite that looks like a book! I have friends who have arthritis who find kindles easier now.

Saying that though non fiction I’ll always prefer paperback, underlining etc and will never drop the library either!

scarfaceace · 31/12/2024 09:33

I have a Kindle and a Kobo and I love them both, but the Kobo has the edge. The advantage of the Kobo is that you can download library books for free.

WhatShallIdo11 · 31/12/2024 09:33

I’m like you - love reading and hated the thought of a kindle - liked holding a book. Until I got a kindle - would not be without it now - fits into my handbag so goes everywhere with me - I get it out when I can do read more - I would carry a book around with me - enjoy

What one would you recommend?

Paperwhite.
Don't get a Kindle Fire, which is a tablet with a reading app on it. You can't read outside because of the screen glare, it is slow and needs charging more often than a Paperwhite.

DivineHour · 31/12/2024 09:34

They’re not a replacement for material books for me, but where I find them invaluable is for travelling, in the bath, and being able to read yourself to the edge of consciousness in bed without having to turn the light off. I have a Paperwhite.

SlugsWon · 31/12/2024 09:34

Everything that @RampantIvy said. I read about a book a week on my kindle, it is the item I'd save first in a house fire!

I can read in bed without disturbing my husband. I can make the font nice and big so I don't need to worry about wearing my reading glasses. If I go on holiday I don't need to worry about which books to bring - they are all there. It's lightweight.

The best thing though is that it connects to my public library and I can access any book I want, for free, at the touch of a button. There is a waiting list for new or popular books, but I can always find something I want to read. You never need to be without a book again 😊

kiraric · 31/12/2024 09:34

I do all my reading on a kindle now. Love it!

Reasons I prefer to physical books:

Can carry hundreds of books with me on a tiny light device

Never lose my page

Reasons I prefer to reading on a tablet:

Nothing like reading on a backlit screen, has the feel of reading paper

Battery lasts for absolutely ages

Physically robust - can chuck in a bag, not that delicate

But I read a lot - usually over a hundred books a year and also travel a lot, so portability and storage maybe matter to me more than some people

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 31/12/2024 09:35

It saves SO MUCH SPACE.

Lightswitchup · 31/12/2024 09:36

Adjustable font is the best bit about it for me, and also the back light. I can’t really see well enough to read some books any more even with glasses on. Then if on holiday and I wake up earlier than the rest of them I can read as no need to put light on. When book is finished you can just start another right away. I wouldn’t be without mine now.

HardenYourHeart · 31/12/2024 09:36

Don't get a kindle. Amazon is a pain in the ass with DRM. It can remove books as you travel or even change the content of a book you already own, if a publisher has decided to do so.

I have a pocket book and I love it. I have all my eBooks in .epub format and I keep the device offline, unless I am at home and want to update the firmware. Battery lasts forever. It has a backlight, so I can read it in the dark. However, I prefer to leave it off and use a low light in my bedroom, when reading in bed. It makes me fall asleep more quickly.

SlugsWon · 31/12/2024 09:36

Don't get the one that is like a tablet, get a kindle paper white, it is like reading a book. The tablet ones are like reading on your phone

NessaSmith · 31/12/2024 09:37

Paperwhite!

I LOVE mine. It doesn't hurt your eyes even though it has enough light to read in the dark.

Battery lasts forever

Kindle books often cheaper

Very robust

Make font smaller (better for my vision) or bigger (better for DW!)

theduchessofspork · 31/12/2024 09:37

I love them because I travel a lot and also I’m not organised at having a book lined up to go for when I finish the last one.

If it wasn’t for this I don’t think I’d bother, it’s nice to get away from screens and turn pages.

Lightswitchup · 31/12/2024 09:37

Oh yes definitely a paperwhite

WaltzingWaters · 31/12/2024 09:38

I didn’t want one, I liked having an actual book to open. But then I moved to Greece for work and knew it would be difficult and expensive to get English books there (I usually used the library before). So I got a kindle. I do find it really convenient and now find it much easier than a book. I like adjusting the font size and brightness. Being able to read in the dark. Not having to take several books on holiday. The charge lasts for ages.

Azaleahead · 31/12/2024 09:40

I originally just got mine for holidays - like a pp I read a book a day on hols so packing was a nightmare.
I now also like that I can read in bed without the lights on. I wake at weird times in the night (perimenopausal) and like to read before sleep whereas DH doesn’t. Now we don’t have to compromise with bedtime.
Lighter to hold if you’re wanting to read a chunky book.
Choose how bright to have the screen/font size. I find some real books hard going if the page is a bit yellow or the typeface cramped.
Best of all, it fits in a small handbag so I never need be without a book eg on commute or waiting at DCs activities. And I don’t need to take a second book with me in case I finish the current one.
I have a paperwhite version.
Incidentally, I got a refurbished one so it didn’t even cost v much.

I love real books so was initially reluctant but I’m an absolute convert.

OhBling · 31/12/2024 09:41

Don't buy a tablet, get the paperwhite. It's more like am actually book, very lightweight etc.

I almost never read paper books. Kindle is lighter, more accessible etc. Inalsomread quite a lot of shitty light stuff and I like that I am not destroying trees to do it! Plusni can access a much wider range, at a much cheaper price, too.

My kindle comes everywhere with me and it's so convenient to take out and read - on public transport, in long queues, while waiting for the kids etc.

I am fully aware that I am hostage to Amazon and occasionally consider if I should be looking st alternatives. But I get a lot of books for free and frankly, it's just so convenient so... 🤷‍♂️
