Convince me to get a kindle

I love to read and tried a kindle when they first came out many years ago but they weren’t for me, can’t really even remember why but just remember I much preferred a paper work. Are they worth it? What makes them so good? What type should I get? I don’t need a tablet for other things than just reading. Are books much cheaper on the kindle? I’d like to up my reading this year if I can. Thanks a million

I don't have a Kjndle, I opted for a Kobo as I wanted to borrow books from the library. Not paying for books when there's hundreds out there for free!

I hadn’t read a book for about 20 yrs then in Sept 23 I got given a Kindle paper white and I’ve read hundreds of books since , generally late at night in bed as I have insomnia . We have kindle unlimited anyway as my daughter uses it on hers so we just share an account .

Oh that is fabulous! 😁

JustCuttinAboot · 31/12/2024 12:14

I have the Paper white - I also have kindle unlimited so get lots of free books - I love having so many books in my pocket.

I read in the bath so bought a waterproof kindle. Best thing ever

No need to get a kindle, just the the app on your regular tablet. They are useless for anything but books

Reading a Paperwhite is much easier on the eyes than reading a tablet. Also, the glare on a tablet makes reading outdoors difficult. A kindle battery lasts much longer than a tablet battery.

If you do a lot of reading it's a no brainer. An ebook is many times better than a tablet.

I always loved a proper book and resisted a kindle for a while but had one for several years now and it's one of my most used and loved items. I have Kindle Unlimited which is £9.50 a month and allows you to download any books that are under the Unlimited scheme for free - there are thousands on there. It's also so convenient for reading at night, or when travelling etc.

I have the paperwhite which is so easy on the eyes and you can adjust font, brightness, warmth etc. Couldn't recommend one high enough

Kindle unlimited is great.

To the OP, I have a paperwhite and it's one of my prized possessions. Always with me.

doodleschnoodle · 31/12/2024 12:30

Proper e-readers like Kindles use e-ink so the page looks like a book page. Reading a book on a tablet is absolutely not the same thing. I think some people are still under the misapprehension that Kindles are the Amazon Fire tablets.

Whataretalkingabout · 31/12/2024 12:35

Does anyone know how I could access an English or American library on my eReader? I live in a non English speaking country. TIA.

Thank you. This has been my main reservation - the way that you never properly own anything but are forever subject to terms about how you effectively "rent" it that are beyond your control.

Can you get anything for the pocket book that you would get for kindle, but without the DRM hassle?

I've had a kindle for many years, have ready many books, and have never been aware of books being removed.

EmmaMaria · 31/12/2024 12:38

I bought one many years ago, one of the first ones, because I was travelling to South Amrecia and the Galapagos islands, and for the boat the luggage allowance was so limited that I simply wouldn't have been able to fit in the number of books I could read in 8 days. I never thought I'd take to it. It was definitely a purchase of desperation. I now rarely read anything else - I only get books in the very rare circumstances that something isn't published on Kindle.

I have a Paperwhite version. Why? It fits in the smallest of handbags, so I can read absolutely anywhere at any time. The Paperwhite screen allows you to read in full sunlight. Or in total darkness. I travel a lot, so how else could I carry around the (currently) 112 unread books I have (that sounds like a lot of unread books but my reading total for this year is 79 kindle books and 2 paper books). Books are definitely cheaper on Kindle (hence the 112 unread books - every time I see a bargain 99p book I fancy I buy it!).

And I have a newer, but not the newest version - but a waterproof one. The first one, after many years of use, accidentlly got dropped in the bath and didn't survive the experience!

caramac04 · 31/12/2024 12:41

I’ve already recommended a paper white but I also have the BORROWBOX app on my phone which means I can borrow ebooks from my library for free. It’s a good system and you can reserve books.

Doggymummar · 31/12/2024 11:50

For me, that's the reason to go for it!

I really like not having any distractions and the much superior battery life

I don't need a tablet, can do everything else on my phone or laptop

GameOfJones · 31/12/2024 12:53

I was really reluctant to get a Kindle but I absolutely love it! I do pretty much all of my reading on it now other than non-fiction books that I prefer to have in the house (e.g. cookbooks) or borrow from the library. But for the bulk of my reading I use my Kindle. Definitely get the paperwhite as it's like reading the page of a book rather than reading on a phone or tablet.

Reasons I love it are:

I can read in the dark without hurting my eyes

It is lightweight and portable

Charge lasts ages

I can carry multiple books with me on one device

I have Amazon Prime so I can borrow ten books at a time for free via Prime Reading

I can read erotica on the bus without anyone judging me as they can't see the cover 🤣

MinnieMountain · 31/12/2024 12:59

DH bought me one for when I was breastfeeding DS.

I now use it for extra books on holiday if I’ve read all my paperbacks. It’s also handy for getting the free sample to see if I like a book.

CluelessAboutBiology · 31/12/2024 13:06

Muddledbylifeadmin · 31/12/2024 09:30

I can't. I have one that hasn't been turned on or charged for several years now.

@Mattey I think I know someone who might be interested in selling you a second hand Kindle🤭

Runnersandtoms · 31/12/2024 13:14

RampantIvy · 31/12/2024 09:29

I can read in bed without having to put the light on - I do most of my reading in bed
They are easier to hold - no having to hold a book open
They are lighter and easier to take travelling
You can adjust the brightness and font size

TBH I find reading a paper book more inconvenient these days.

Exactly the same. I read in bed when dh is sleeping and find it much easier than a book. If I do read an actual book I have my kindke open to use like a light to light up my book lol. Also I am terrible at using bookmarks so always dog ear pages of books and have to try hard to remember not to if borrowing a book. Kindle remembers your page (even if I read on my phone Kindle app and then go back to my kindle it then syncs and asks if I want to jump to the last page read). Only downside is sometimes I forget the name /author of the book I'm reading because you don't see the cover unless you exit to your library.

Bjorkdidit · 31/12/2024 13:17

You can get lots of books for 99p, including new and popular books, so far cheaper than paperbacks.

If you're unsure OP you could get a second hand one cheaply on ebay. But definitely get one that has a light for reading at night.

Hippopotas · 31/12/2024 13:20
  • I can read anywhere it’s portable
  • i can read at night as it’s backlit
  • it contains hundreds/thousands of books
  • kindle books are cheaper than physical books
  • there are often 99p offers and stuff your kindle day where there are free books available
  • I read so much more now I have a kindle.
RampantIvy · 31/12/2024 13:31

@Runnersandtoms You don't need to exit the book to see what you are reading. Just tap the top of the page. Like you, I sometimes forget the name of the book I am reading.

abbey44 · 31/12/2024 13:47

I love the feel of an actual book (& have hundreds on my shelves at home) so I resisted the idea of a kindle for a long time. And then my son gave me one last Christmas….I'm a total convert now, for all the reasons given already.

Convenient, easy to read (I have a Paperwhite) and I like being able to adjust the font if my eyes aren’t having a great day - my kindle fits into my coat pocket or handbag and comes everywhere with me. The big difference is on holidays….I don’t have to take half a suitcase of books with me these days!

I wouldn’t be without my kindle now.

Sid9nie · 31/12/2024 13:48

Portable, space saving, can buy a book whenever I like.

beguilingeyes · 31/12/2024 13:57

I recommend looking on ebay for Kindles. People upgrade and sell their old ones for peanuts..usually with a case thrown in.
I asked for the Barbra Sreisand autobigraphy for Christmas last year. i ended up buying the Kindle version to actually read because it's a mighty tome and I find hardbacks totally impractical to read.

hexsnidgett · 31/12/2024 14:01

I have a kobo and love it, I mostly borrow books from the library so they are free. Buying books from the kobo store is also simple.
Some libraries are strict about you living in the area, but some make it really easy to do all online. I think I currently belong to 4!

ILoveAnnaQuay · 31/12/2024 14:04

I much prefer a physical book, but the kindle really comes into its own when I'm travelling. I'm going on a 2 week holiday next month but flying with hand luggage only. If I didn't have my kindle I'd be really stuck as I'm hoping to relax and read quite a bit.

DH prefers a kindle as he can adjust the font.

You need to search libraries that don’t need to authenticate the users address for enrolment.

Miami-Dade Public library is an example but there are loads of others. You would need to register for a digital library card (use a random/fake US address), then go to the ebooks sections to borrow.

If you search on reddit or facebook groups there are lists of libraries where it’s possible to join.
